The rockfish species in this box, sometimes referred to as<br />

"red snapper,"<br />

can be easily confused:<br />

Canary Rockfish<br />

Yelloweye Rockfish<br />

Body orange fading to light orange or yellow on belly.<br />

Rough pair <strong>of</strong> ridges above bright yellow eyes. Tail<br />

not indented. Fins pinkish, commonly with black<br />

edges. Small fish may have one or two white lines on<br />

sides (not shown). To 36 inches.<br />

Vermilion Rockfish<br />

lateral line<br />

Body with bright orange <strong>and</strong> gray blotches. Narrow,<br />

light gray zone along side. Tail indented with two<br />

distinct tips. Fins bright orange. To 30 inches.<br />

Body reddish with gray marbling. Fins red (may be<br />

dark-edged in small fish). Lower jaw with scales. Tail<br />

slightly indented. To 30 inches.<br />

Small mouth with small teeth. Upper jaw does not<br />

extend past middle <strong>of</strong> eye. Males with blue spots<br />

around head (shown); females lighter with orange<br />

spots <strong>and</strong> yellow fins. To 24 inches.<br />

Smooth skin without scales. Small flap <strong>of</strong> skin on<br />

snout <strong>and</strong> above each eye. Body may be marbled<br />

brown, red or green. To 39 inches.<br />

Lingcod<br />

Large mouth with large, sharp teeth. Upper jaw<br />

extends past middle <strong>of</strong> eye. Body may be marbled<br />

brown, blue or green. To 60 inches.<br />
