country. Forty five years after my resolve, I am really feeling very depressed that
whether my country of which I am so proud, secular democracy, our constitution we
feel so proud we hold our head high but when it come to ground reality, we have to
hold our head in shame. That 60 years after our independence, our talk about secularism,
inclusiveness and all that, so much violence has been taking place in our country.
Hon’ble Prime Minister rightly pointed out that no community should be profiled but
this is what is exactly happening on the ground. A community is being profiled and their
young people are lifted without any proof, just they are tortured, made to confess and
that confession is given wide publicity through out media. The media I am very sorry to
say, has not been performing its duty properly. It publishes very prominently the version
given by the police and no investigative reports, nothing, and the whole nation
thinks that Muslims are terrorists. Which is very very wrong. Those people who are
tortured and made to confess, they are made real culprits and those who are terrorizing
entire communities in Orissa, in Maharashtra, several other places, even their names are
not published. Simply a group is mentioned, so how are we going to remove this curse
of terrorism and communal violence from our country. Batala House - well may be
encounter is not fake but why not hold any inquiry. It will come out clearly that it was
fake or it was not fake. Why fear any, if somebody says police will be demoralized by
holding an inquiry, do not you think the entire community is being demoralized,
demoralized by not holding an inquiry. There is need for holding an inquiry, so that if
encounter is genuine, those critic would be silenced and if it is fake, those who have
done, should be punished properly. So that such events don’t repeat in future. It is
question of pride of our country, of our values, our politics, does not reflect our constitution.
60 years have passed, our entire election calculus is based on caste and communities
. Candidates are set up on the basis of their caste and communities. I am reminded
of Maulana Azad in 1952, when first general elections was to take place. He was
given ticket from Rampur. Maulana Azad said why I am being given ticket from
Rampur. I have never done any work there. They said Maulana, there are more
muslims, you will easily win. Maulana Azad tore away the ticket and said did I fight for
independence for my country to represent only muslims. I want to represent all people
of India. He did not accept Congress ticket from Rampur and then he was given from
Haryana and he successfully fought election. These were the ideals of our leaders,
freedom fighters, who sacrificed every thing for freedom of our country and today our
entire election calculus is based on caste and community. Why casteism will not
increase, why communalism will not increase, it is bound to increase unless we reflect
constitutional values in our politics, ground level politics, we always referred to lofty
principles of our constitution and we feel very proud of that and we must feel proud
of our constitutional principles, but at the same time we should feel shamed that our
ground politics does not reflect that. Today, I have traveled right from Kerala to Kashmir,
interacted with people. I am forced to say that there is great deal of anger among
all Muslims in this country today, amongst all Christians in this country
