meteorite that finally destroyed all the dinasaures on this earth and I like to think that the
meteor was symbolic wrath of god. I myself have lived and flourished in secular india
which all of us have and in the fullness of time I would like to die in secular India, if god
wills. But we should not trouble dear God because he has lot of other things to do
and we on this earth must try and strive to see what we can do, in order to achieve this
state of affairs. The affairs which I believe Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru put in the fantastic
book Discovery of India which I pleaded with the former education Minister and the
present Education Minister to prescribe it as a compulsory text in colleges which greatly
inspired young people at that time like me, namely how India really has evolved. People
just don’t know how India has evolved, people just don’t know how we are supposed
to live as one community, people around the world if you travel around the world, they
all tell you and wonder how the people exist as a nation and that’s our great pride, I
take great pride in saying that we exist as a nation and yet we find that there is one group
or another who goes about doing a great deal of things which are totally nasty. I have
just two contributions to make, namely to remind Hon’ble members of two things. The
first is for those, Sir, who are intolerant of conversions – and there is a lot of talk about
it. I would just like to remind you that the religious hegemony of Brahmanism was
contested by a Kshatriya Noble man, who founded Buddhism. The new religion rejected
the determination of status by birth and the higher article ranking of castes about
which one hon’ble member spoke. For more than two hundred years, this posed a
real threat to Hinduism and then with superlative missionary zeal, Adi Sankaracharya
almost single-handedly restored the authority of the Vedas as the basis of Hindu thought.
Please, not by force, but, by persuasion, by his discourses through out the length and
breath of Hindustan, just imagine how this man without communication, in those
days in bullock cart, no planes and no cars, went from length and breadth of this
country and put an end to the hegemony of great religion Budhism in India and he did
this by exercising, please his time honoured but not constitutional right, there was no
constitution, its time honoured right to propogate his own religion. The constitution
gives us this right about article 25 and that time no constitution. And he succeded the
inhabitance of this vast land where we absorbed into Hinduism that had begotten
them and the story of this mass conversion has been described by an oriental scholar
in a very fine phrase and this is how he described this - “Brahmanism killed Buddhism
by a fraternal embrace. Brahmanism killed Buddhism by a fraternal embrace”.
Second, I want to remind you of what a Hindu Mr. T.T. Krishnamachari said in the
constituant assembly. Permit me Prime Minister to take just two minutes of your
further time to read this. When he approved of draft Article 19, which is our now
Article 25 and the inclusion of the word propogate, he uttered some home truths.
He said, Sir, I know as the person who has studied for 13-14 years in Christian
institutions, no attempt has been made to convert me from my own faith and to
practice Christianity, and he said I would ask the house to look at the facts so far
as the history of this type of conversion is concerned. It depends on the way in
