THE PRESERVATION OF <strong>BRITISH</strong> GLIDING by Ben Watson The most important task of the BGA is to maintain the liberty to manage our own affairs. This liberty was gained by our predecessors, notably Philip Wills, Ann Welch and Nick Goodhart, after much forceful argument in the corridors of power. It is up to all of us to maintain that freedom. To most that freedom means airspace, which certainly is at present the most active issue. It requires continual vigilance and an enormous amount of time and effort by the Chairman of the Airspace Committee, the Director of Operations and many others notably the Chairman of the Political Committee who is responsible for the political lobby led most ably by our Parliamentary Spokesman Mr Bill Walker MP. However, freedom to run our own affairs also means lower costs for all glider pilots as the following table dramatically demonstrates. There are more than 80 active glider pilots working on BGA Committees. And in almost every case that means ongoing out-of-hours duties as well as atten dance at meetings.
