Try-Out Registration Deadline is Aug 1
Registration for try-outs is coming to a close. The hard
deadline for reserving a try-out is August 1. This can be
accomplished on the phone at 815-459-4455 or by stopping in
to talk with the professionals at the Front Desk.
As of 6:00am this morning, we have 164 slots filled.
When arriving for a scheduled appointment, swimmers
should bring a list of their best times. Many swimmers have
competed for country club, recreational and other teams, so we
do not have access to all times. Also, our Piranha records are
incomplete. While speed is good to have, it is a tiny portion of
what will contribute to who qualifies to make the team.
There has been a change of plan: Try-outs will start
with the personal interview and the swim portion will be
second. Swimmers should come in their suits to save time and
ask for Coach Seide at the Front Desk when arriving at the Y.
If you are not sure if your swimmer is not ready for
competition, we will present you with options to encourage
continued improvement.
Illinois Regional Championships
A determined Rhiannon Wozny represented the Piranhas at the Illinois Regional
Championships held at Northside College Prep on Kedzie Avenue in Chicago this last weekend.
She competed in the 200 Freestyle, the 100 Backstroke and the 100 IM.
Despite swimming in a different championship meet the day before, outdoors in the
heat, Miss Wozny swam two lifetime bests in her three races. She is the Summer Regional
100 Backstroke Champion, winning in a time of 1:17.05. She also claimed second place in the
200 Free in 2:28.37 and fourth place in the IM in 1:20.63. These are two AA and one A cut
times.
“Rhiannon continues to impress. There were a number of short-term and long-term
factors working against her but her enormous determination and focus won the day. I am
excited about the progress she will make and the accomplishments that she will achieve in the
upcoming short course season,” replied Coach Seide when asked for comment. “She is one of
the young leaders on the Piranhas who possess nearly unlimited potential.”
Trivia Challenge
The Trivia Time Challenge is back early from vacation.
It just couldn’t stay away. If you are coming to the Olympic
Viewing Parties, see if you can answer this:
Y Swimming and USA Swimming have many
championship meets each spring. Can you list all of them, by
competition and qualifying times, in order of speed required, in
an Olympic year? (Hint: There are at least 10.)
To win, you must turn in a correct written response at
the skating party mentioned above. All correct answers win
the prize.
Do you have an interesting, thought provoking
enigma, puzzle or rare fact that might be used for our trivia
game? If you do, please send it in via email.

We Have A Winner! Suit Vote Not Close
The final team suit vote was not close. Our new suit
won by a margin of better than 5:1:1.
We will have two official suits. The solid blue one with
the Piranha logo is suit #1. Our new suit will be #2. For the
upcoming season, each Piranha will be required to have one of
the two.
The new suit will be added to our team website for
easy acquisition. We will be having an Apparel Night, which is
scheduled for 3pm on Sunday 8/26 at the Y.
Technique Madness
Piranha Post
Summer 2012, Vol I, Edition X, Page 2, July 26
The Stroke Technique Weeks were planned based on
the last set that were offered in spring. Those averaged less
than 6 participants. The upcoming programs were budgeted, by
time and fees for up to eight. Response, instead of the expected
trickle, has been tsunami-like.
We learned two things from this experience:
Technique help is in big demand and; 2) We should have
collected emails from everyone for communication purposes.
We’ll act with this new data from this point forward. Clinic
line-ups are on the next page. If you cannot make the listed
time, please email the coach to try to make other arrangements.
We had almost 30 sign up for each clinic. We apologize
if you did not make it in this time around. We’ll schedule more
time and space for the next series. If you are still interested in
help right now,
1-on-1 sessions
can be arranged
by emailing
Coach Seide. The
Y offers these as
5 x 30 minute
sessions for $90.
Speedster Ali Buytendorp
Olympic Viewing Parties
Olympic swimming begins on July 28 & runs through
August 4th. Come watch Phelps, Lochte and Team USA together
at the Y. Our long-awaited special package of special materials
just arrived from USA Swimming.
We’ll be in the Teen Room downstairs, watching on
the large flat-screen television. Liquid refreshment will be
provided, but the requested cost of admission will be some
type of finger food/snack to share.
Sat, July 28, 7pm-9pm for Men’s 400 IM, 400 Free & 100 Br,
Women’s 100 Fly, 400 IM, 400 Free Relay
Sun, July 29, 7-9pm for Men’s 200 Free, 100 Bk, 400 Fr Relay &
100 Br, Women’s 100 Bk, 100 Br, 400 Free, 100 Fly
We may do more, but this is our start. We need a
minimum of 1 parent to attend. Ideal would be 3 volunteers. If
you can help, please email Coach Seide asap.
