the horiz<strong>on</strong>, but very str<strong>on</strong>g <strong>on</strong> our heads, the air most soft, and the heat such that when<br />

walking we had to take off our jackets. In fact we could hardly bear them in the carriage.<br />

In the morning there was a pretty hard frost, but no sign of snow or ice. All in all, it<br />

appears that this is the most beautiful seas<strong>on</strong> of this climate. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>y call it Indian Summer.<br />

We saw 4 or 5 workers ________ busy working <strong>on</strong> the road. This gives hope that within<br />

10 years or so it will be a bit passable. 10 As for the present, you have to walk to make the<br />

steep grades and even more so the descents, if you d<strong>on</strong>’t want to be shaken to pieces in a<br />

way that is not known in France or in England. Nevertheless, the <strong>on</strong>ly serious risk is that<br />
