LAMHIL SEPTEMBER 2012 OPINION 10 THE WORST THING TO HAVE IN COMMON I had so much in common with a girl. She can relate to almost every experience and situation that I told her about. We had the same taste in almost everything. We grew up in the same locality and went to the same high school. Of course, this alone makes us just two among the thousands that passed out from St. Mary s High in Churachandpur. However, not many had a year break after +2, which we did. We both went to Delhi to prepare for an entrance exam. However, we lasted only three months there and returned home subsequently. Almost a year later, we both failed our respective entrance tests. We both hate DTC buses and had avoided it completely at the cost of many other luxuries. For you see, we emptied our pockets almost entirely on auto fares. We both were even hospitalized once; also due to the same complain - gastritis. We both preferred sugar-low tea to special tea. Everybody loves black for a shirt. So do we. But, we never had red and yellow before. Again, everyone loves music. So do we. However, there are few who like AC/DC and GnR. We both have been their fans, !Shoot To Thrill" being our latest favourite then. I was surprised, and upset as well because I love things, which I thought girls hate. We both enjoyed Chetan Bhagat s novel (5 point someone, the others suck) and The Big Bang Theory (though I ve started to dislike it lately). However, despite all our common experiences and similar tastes, we do not like each other enough to be more than friends. On the contrary, I had so little in common with another girl. We grew up in - Thet Thet Haokip an entirely different world. She had never been in my locality as I had never been in hers. Environment had a crucial role in shaping our psyche, personality and shape esp. during our childhood. After all the works of the environment, when we met at college in Shillong, we were already very different from each other. She was slim and tall like all her siblings, while I was bulky and short. God had given us free will but not free choice of genes. She is good in singing. So, she often sang in churches and always during our college outings. She even plays the guitar herself# I have never sung solo in church or anywhere. Simply because I can t sing# My career as a singer had ended even before it started. I was still young when this incident happened. I was at home playing a guitar, practicing the three chords I knew. I sang a song matching the chords, or so I thought. Then, an elder from the church came home and found me engrossed in that state. He remarked, !laa ahi tah leh!" Since then, there was no looking forward. It was astonishing to discover how two people can have so much differences and so little in common. Change is said to be the only thing that does not change. Likewise, I find differences to be the only thing common in all human beings. However, despite all our differences, I know one thing we have in common: we don t like each other enough to be more than friends, either!
