Dear Parents & Caregivers,
THE WILD RUMPUS
The Rec/Year 1 class newsletter
Welcome back to school for 2012. I’m excited about teaching your child this year
and look forward to meeting with each of you at our parent information night which
will be in week 3, on Tuesday February 14 th .
The information below provides you with insight into class routines and expectations
for this year.
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
Children are expected to show respect toward their fellow students and the school
facilities. I place a strong emphasis on taking responsibility for actions and
belongings. I encourage your support in this by reminding your child of the morning
routine, but not doing the tasks for them.
MORNING ROUTINE
1. Unpack your bag by putting lunchbox in fridge, water bottle on
table, and fruit in the box by back window
2. Place Home book on green desk
3. Place lunch order in green box (Mon, Wed, Fri)
4. Change your reader
5. Quietly read your reader at your desk, work with an adult, or look
for teacher direction
6. Put take home folder in the red IN box by back window
READING
Children are given the opportunity to change their readers every day.
1. Readers are to be placed in the boxes at the entrance to the room.
2. Please record the name of the book read in the yellow home
reading book each night and add an encouraging comment, as well
as your signature.
ORAL LANGUAGE
Our class has set Show and Tell topics each week. Please help your child to stick to
these topics and plan what they will say to the class. Show & Tell starts in week 2.
MORNING LITERACY
Our daily morning Literacy block consists of
1. Independent reading time
2. Class discussion of their reading
3. Shared reading of a big book
4. Writing time
5. Show & Tell
6. Spelling
CLASS MONITORS
In our class we have monitors who have special jobs each week. These include line
leaders, office monitors, and tidy monitors. These small, but important roles give the
students a sense of responsibility and are a vital part of our class community.
RECEPTION SIGHT WORDS
The Reception children will be continuing with the Golden Words. The responsibility
is on you to play games with these words, so make it fun!
YEAR 1 SIGHT WORDS
The responsibility is on you to play games with these words. Please test your child at
home, and let me know via the home book when a new set is needed. The sight words
come in packs of 100, so please work through them slowly and in order.
HELPERS
Adult helpers are most welcome in our classroom. We particularly require assistance
from 8.45am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. You might also like to
consider helping in other ways such as:
1. Assisting on excursions
2. Helping out with special electives (ie. Learning Centres on Wednesday
afternoon, Easter/Christmas crafts)
3. Offering to share an area of expertise with the class
WHAT I BELIEVE ABOUT EDUCATION
I believe
The role of education is to help children build on prior knowledge,
understanding, and inquiry.
Children need encouragement as they learn in different ways at different rates.
Learning is maximised when children are challenged, given feedback, and
learn to work independently and collaboratively.
Effective learning is based on play so while this year marks the trialling of the
new National Curriculum for Maths, English, and History, we plan to engage
your child through and activity and play based approach.
Have a great week!
