Abies lasiocarpa- Large, growing to 100' or more this conifer has light grayish to chalk white<br />

bark. The unusual cones are a dark purple color. (Krussman, 1985). Best sited in the “Forested<br />

Ridge” section. Placement should be with an open sunny position in draining loam soils.<br />

Ethnobotany: Medicinal use of pitch <strong>and</strong> wood.<br />

‘Argentea’- Good silver needled form of the species. Site within the “Forested Ridge”<br />

area.<br />

‘Compacta’- A dense branching form of the species for open areas within the “Valley<br />

Bottom” or “Forested Ridge” areas.<br />

‘Duflon’<br />

‘Glauca’- Similar in growth habit of type, but has silver-blue needles. Place in the<br />

“Forested Ridge” area.<br />

‘Glauca Compacta’- Good blue foliage, has a dwarf conical form. Can be used in the<br />

“Alpine Zone” or “Valley Bottom” areas.<br />

‘Green Globe’- A dwarf form with gray-green needles. Can be used as a small hedge/<br />

border. Can be used in the “Alpine Zone”.<br />

‘Mulligans Dwarf’- A conical compact dwarf plant which is densely branched.<br />

Suggested use in the “Alpine Zone”.<br />

Abies procera- The Noble Fir can reach a size of 200’ plus. Needles lay flat on each side of the<br />

branch instead of around (Krussman, 1985). Best placed on “Forested Ridge” area.<br />

‘Argentea’- Bluish-white needles on this form. Use in “Forested Ridge” zone.<br />

‘Aurea’- A good yellow needled form. Has the same growth habits of the species. Use in<br />

“Forested Ridge” zone.<br />

‘Beissneri’<br />

‘Blaue Hexe’- A round growth habit. Great for smaller areas of the garden (Krussman,<br />

1985). Suitable for the “Alpine Zone” due to its small growth habits.<br />

‘Compacta’- A compact growing form. Can be used in the “Alpine Zone”.<br />

‘Conica’<br />

‘Coerulescens’<br />

‘Frijsenborg’<br />

‘Glauca’- Has a nice glaucous coating on the foliage (Kruckenberg, 1992). Suggested<br />

use in the “Forested Ridge” area.
