International Melges 32 Class President Jeff Ecklund
It has been a very successful year for the Melges 32. To no one’s surprise, 2009 delivered more momentum and major fleet milestones. It all started in
December, a little more than a year ago in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. at the largest Gold Cup Regatta ever. We moved on to Key West, then Miami for the Grand
Prix where we were the largest competing sportboat fleet. We became an ISAF Recognized Class, enabling us to conduct our very first World
Championship in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy. It was the largest gathering of Melges 32s ever (check out the impressive starting line aerial photo taken by
the legendary Carlo Borlenghi on page 16.) This is the ‘real’ power of the Melges 32, a perfect combination of strength, ownership integrity and passion for
the spirit of the class. A very special thanks to Commodore Bonadeo, managing Sports Director Edoardo Recchi and his amazing professional event planning
team at Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, as the IM32CA’s first Worlds will be the most memorable. Enough can’t be said about the superior leadership of the
European Fleet provided by President Filippo Pacinotti. Congratulations to Pieter Taselaar on becoming the class’ first World Champion, and to Carlo Alberini
for winning the prestigious 2009 Audi Melges 32 Sailing Series.
Progress in the U.S. has a lot to do with the drive, dedication and passion of North American Fleet President, Stephen Pugh. We held our first intercontinental
event in 2009, the North American Championship in Sausalito, Calif. It was a great pleasure to see long-time Melges owner Don Jesberg take top honors.
Congratulations also to one of the newest members of our fleet, Andy Lovell who won the Rolex Big Boat Series coupled as the U.S. Nationals.
The 2010 International Melges 32 Class schedule is diverse and well-rounded. Everyone is encouraged to take a close look at the USA Sailing Series. Teams
have many opportunities to race in 2010 as we work our way up to the World Championship in September. It too will be paired with the RBBS (serving as
Pre-Worlds) with full-on Worlds competition held during the following week. The legendary St. Francis Yacht Club, along with their superb race and event
management team lead by John Craig will make it a first-class event.
Another grand tour of Audi Sailing Series events is slated for 2010. In 2008, 17 boats competed in the series. We’re pleased to inform of an increase, 26
participated in 2009. The first European Championship will take place in Cagliari, Sardinia and the Melges 32 has been invited to the Audi Invitational in
Porto Cervo. All great events, that we are sure will attract impressive attendance levels. I’d like to extend a very sincere gesture of appreciation to series
sponsor Audi on behalf of the class. The attitude of this fleet, and their concept of racing really complement one another.
The Melges 32 is possibly the fastest growing class of performance sportboats in the world. Everywhere you look — North America and Europe have grown
and continue to grow substantially. We’re expanding our footprint further within the Australasia region with new owners. It is the result of focused owners,
professional builders, reliable sales and distribution, a well-organized class association and targeted marketing effort. Everyone’s continued thoughts and
ideas are of great value. The Melges 32 is the best, but we really need every person’s involvement; most importantly your participation.
This year, we have a new executive committee addition. Kip Meadows has accepted the position as International Treasurer. He is no stranger to performance
racing and can be seen at regattas all over the U.S. I am certain he’ll be a great asset to an already dedicated International Executive Committee.
I would also like to thank Joy Dunigan for her hard work, not only on this Yearbook, but also the web site, PR and keeping the class in order. She works very
hard to make sure everyone is current with their race documentation and membership. I don’t think we’d be where we are without Joy!
Administrator Joy Dunigan
2009 was a really busy year for the IM32CA. With a very successful, first
World Championship in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy and North Americans
in Sausalito, Calif. USA now under our belt, we’re looking forward to
another supersonic racing season.
There are a couple of administrative topics that we’d like to touch on such
as crew declaration deadlines and submissions, ISAF Classification and
ordering sail buttons. We can’t stress enough how important it is to get
your crew declarations in on time. In addition to your fellow racers
checking out the stiff competition, ISAF is continually looking at these.
The class, in an effort to help owners know if their declared team is
compliant with class rules, an updated crew declaration form has been
created. In addition to each crew member name, Group and ID No., please
also take note of their expiration. All Classifications need to be current
while racing, otherwise they will be categorized as a Group 3 sailor.
Be aware that Group 2 Sailor Classification will be eliminated as of
April 1, 2010. If you are currently a Group 2 sailor, it will be necessary for
you to be re-classified. Stay close to melges32.com as ISAF has been
pretty efficient in communicating such changes and additional info to
the class.
Per the class rules, every year, every team has a allotment of sail buttons
for purchase based on participation. (See IM32CA Rule, G.1.4) All sail
buttons need to be purchased between Jan. 1-Dec. 31 for that year. If you
need to purchase sail buttons before or after an event, please fill out the
Sail Button Form as downloaded from the Melges 32 web site under Rules
& Regs, then mail or fax to class Headquarters in Zenda, Wisc. USA. We
encourage you to purchase these items in advance of events if possible.
Onsite purchase of sail buttons can be completed via the Class
Representative assigned to that event.
Please welcome Niccolo Bianchi, European Fleet Secretary, he is the
newest addition to our Administrative team. Niccolo can be reached via
the Melges Europe office based in Italy, or via eurofleet@melges32.com.
As always, an incredible thanks to Melges Performance Sailboats and
Melges Europe — Harry, Andy, Federico, Charlie, Luisa. These individuals
support the fleet in ways too numerous to mention. The class is very lucky
to have their support, knowledge and experience at our fingertips, as well
as their passion for the Melges 32.
Should anyone have any questions regarding events, race documentation
submissions, etc. do not hesitate to contact me.
