Spring has sprung and the Canton
Historical Society intends to get you
rolling with its annua] carnival in the K
mart shopping center
May 5 is the day the Historical Soci-
ety once again will offer the visit from
IXJ Mouchelles Appraisers who will be

Canton Center Road to estimate the
value of any treasure you bring in —

that you keep putting aside and saying

traditional weekend is the Friends of
the Library once again holding its an
nual book sale, also to be held at the K
mart Plaza If you're looking for a par-
ticular book, shop early However, if
you just want to get your hands on as
many books as possible for the best
price possible, wait until Sunday when
they will once again offer their famous
Shopping Bag' of books for only SI 50
Now where can you beat a bargain like
that 7 You could even shop early for
your favorites and return on Sunday,

port the library, we could form a grass
roots committee Quite frankly, from
the looks of the different public service

A 1400 scholarship Is being offered*
by Gamma Gamma chapter of Delta
Kappa Gamma, an international organ-
ization of women educatdrs. ~
The scholarship is designed to help a
woman pursue studies in the field of
educaUon. It LS awarded to either a sen-
ior during her student-teaching semes-
ter or a woman entering teaching as a
college freshman
Applicants must be: a Plymouth Sa-
lem or Plymouth Canton High School
graduate, be attending a Michigan col-
lege or university, demonstrate finan-
cial need, maintain a 3 point or higher
grade-point average and be involved In
other activities such as church. Scouts,
service groups or work.
The scholarship is renewable upon
yearly application, provided criteria
continues to be met
Application dateline is May 1. A
committee will review all applications
and make its determination no later
than June 1.

Two local women were honored re-
cently for their longstanding contribu-

Judy Pavitt and Mary Childs were
named outstanding educators by Gam-
ma Gamma, the Plymouth-Canton
chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an in-
ternaUonal women educators organiza-
Uon
Shirley Spaniel, director of elemen-
tary education for Plymouth-Canton
Community Schools and president of
Gamma Gamma, presented the awards
at a dinner meeting April 10.
Pavitt, a West Middle School librari-
an since 1967, is a graduate of the Uni-
versity of Michigan. She is described as
a "librarian who seeks out children and
helps them find the right materials to
be successful in school."
Childs. a former Plymouth mayor
and member of the Plymouth City
Commission, has worked u a substi- *
tute school teacher in the Plymouth-
Canton school system for 21 years.
A graduate of Ohio's Miami Univer-
sity, she is a member of the Friends of
the Library and the Plymouth Commu- •
nity Arts Council (PCAC).
Childs is described as an educator
who has "always had a special place in
her heart for youngsters and educaUon.
