The <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Cruz</strong> Foundation<br />

is a nonpr<strong>of</strong>it, <strong>all</strong>-volunteer<br />

organization formed in 1974 <strong>to</strong><br />

support the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>California</strong>,<br />

<strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Cruz</strong>. In close partnership with<br />

<strong>UC</strong>SC’s chancellor, faculty, and staff,<br />

the Foundation encourages and accepts<br />

private gifts <strong>to</strong> address critical campus<br />

needs not met by state funds. The<br />

Foundation also promotes greater<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> <strong>UC</strong>SC by providing<br />

vital links among the business,<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional, philanthropic, civic,<br />

and academic communities. The<br />

Foundation’s activities and assets are<br />

governed by a Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees that<br />

includes community, business, and<br />

academic leaders.<br />

A Foundation for the Future<br />

The <strong>UC</strong> <strong>Santa</strong> <strong>Cruz</strong><br />

Foundation welcomes three<br />

new trustees this f<strong>all</strong>. Pictured,<br />

left <strong>to</strong> right: Kamil Hasan, Roy Curry,<br />

and Papken Der Torossian.<br />

Kamil Hasan<br />

Kamil Hasan is a general partner with Hitek Venture Partners, a private venture<br />

capital firm in San Jose. Through their Hasan Family Foundation, Kamil<br />

and his wife, Talat, endowed the Kamil and Talat Hasan Chair in Classical<br />

Indian Music and participated with others in establishing the Ali Akbar Khan<br />

Endowment for Classical Indian music. For more than 25 years, Kamil<br />

Hasan has worked in the s<strong>of</strong>tware industry and venture investment business.<br />

He is on the board <strong>of</strong> several high-technology companies in Silicon V<strong>all</strong>ey.<br />

Roy L. Curry Jr.<br />

Roy L. Curry Jr. is a psychiatrist on the attending and teaching staff <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>California</strong> Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. He has served on the<br />

boards <strong>of</strong> the <strong>California</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> Medicine and Surgery and the San<br />

Francisco Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, and is a member <strong>of</strong><br />

several local, state, and national medical societies. His achievements include<br />

a Falk Fellowship. He received the Meri<strong>to</strong>rious/Distinguished Service Award<br />

from the U.S. Public Health Service for medical emergency assistance,<br />

including work in New Orleans during Hurricane Hazel.<br />

Papken Der Torossian<br />

Papken Der Torossian <strong>of</strong> Sara<strong>to</strong>ga is chief operating <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> Crest<br />

Enterprises Co., an investment and management consulting company.<br />

Der Torossian has received several awards, including the Ellis Island Medal<br />

<strong>of</strong> Honor, given by the National Ethnic Coalition <strong>of</strong> Organizations <strong>to</strong> U.S.<br />

immigrants who have demonstrated outstanding humanitarian excellence<br />

as U.S. citizens. Der Torossian and his wife, Claire, have established the<br />

nonpr<strong>of</strong>it Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company, w<strong>here</strong> their daughter, Jennifer,<br />

is the company’s leading soprano.
