The UC Santa Cruz Foundation is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization formed in 1974 to support the University of California, Santa Cruz. In close partnership with UCSC’s chancellor, faculty, and staff, the Foundation encourages and accepts private gifts to address critical campus needs not met by state funds. The Foundation also promotes greater understanding of UCSC by providing vital links among the business, professional, philanthropic, civic, and academic communities. The Foundation’s activities and assets are governed by a Board of Trustees that includes community, business, and academic leaders. Pictured, left to right: Kamil Hasan, Roy Curry, and Papken Der Torossian. Kamil Hasan Kamil Hasan is a general partner with Hitek Venture Partners, a private venture capital firm in San Jose. Through their Hasan Family Foundation, Kamil and his wife, Talat, endowed the Kamil and Talat Hasan Chair in Classical Indian Music and participated with others in establishing the Ali Akbar Khan Endowment for Classical Indian music. For more than 25 years, Kamil Hasan has worked in the software industry and venture investment business. He is on the board of several high-technology companies in Silicon Valley. Roy L. Curry Jr. Roy L. Curry Jr. is a psychiatrist on the attending and teaching staff of California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. He has served on the boards of the California Society of Medicine and Surgery and the San Francisco Institute for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, and is a member of several local, state, and national medical societies. His achievements include a Falk Fellowship. He received the Meritorious/Distinguished Service Award from the U.S. Public Health Service for medical emergency assistance, including work in New Orleans during Hurricane Hazel. Papken Der Torossian Papken Der Torossian of Saratoga is chief operating officer of Crest Enterprises Co., an investment and management consulting company. Der Torossian has received several awards, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, given by the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations to U.S. immigrants who have demonstrated outstanding humanitarian excellence as U.S. citizens. Der Torossian and his wife, Claire, have established the nonprofit Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company, where their daughter, Jennifer, is the company’s leading soprano.
Trustee Profiles “I believe there’s no better way to be involved in the future of both young people and the Santa Cruz community than serving on the Foundation Board.” “It is gratifying to me to see that even with the growth of the campus since I was a student, UCSC has retained its commitment to excellence in undergraduate education and research.” David Regan David Regan, publisher of the Santa Cruz Sentinel newspaper, began a two-year term as president of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation Board in July. Regan has provided strong leadership in establishing the Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Awards Program that provides $20,000 scholarships to selected community college students who continue their education at UCSC, and fundraising for the Seymour Marine Discovery Center at Long Marine Laboratory and the Center for Ocean Health. He is involved in numerous community organizations and serves on the board of the Delta School, a charter school that started on the UCSC campus. Kenneth Feingold Kenneth Feingold, vice president of the Foundation Board as of July 1, is the first UCSC graduate (Cowell ’71) to serve as an officer of the Foundation. In past years he has served as parliamentarian and committee chair of the Audit and Finance Committees. A Los Angeles attorney specializing in commercial and civil disputes, Feingold boasts a number of ties to UCSC—his wife, brother, and sisterin-law are all alumni. He and his wife, Moira (Cowell ’72), are currently developing an endowed scholarship fund for Santa Monica High School students who enroll at UCSC. Thank you! “As chair of the Finance Committee, I hope to help the Foundation balance immediate need for income with pressure to grow the income stream to meet future needs.” “I serve on the Foundation Board because it supports my goal to try to do some good in the world and make a difference in people’s lives.” Three trustees have stepped down this year, John Arriaga, Richard Crowell, and Toni Landels Hyman, and we wish to thank them for their accomplishments and service on the Foundation Board. A member of the UCSC Alumni Council, Arriaga (Stevenson ’76) applied his extensive experience as a legislative advocate during the annual UC Arthur French UCSC alumnus Arthur French (Stevenson ’74) of Montara, California, has taken on the important role of Finance Committee chair for the UCSC Foundation this year. He has served on the Finance Committee since joining the Foundation in 1998. President and chief investment officer of Pillar Point Equity Management, LLC, French brings 25 years of investment experience to his new role on the Foundation Board. His career includes positions with Citicorp Investment Management, Loomis Sayles & Company, and First Interstate Bank. Margaret Giberson Margaret Lyons Giberson of Los Gatos and Carmel Valley will chair the Nominating Committee this year for the Foundation Board. Since earning her law degree, Giberson has been working on projects to promote environmentally and socially responsible decisions by local and state agencies. In 1995, Giberson and her husband, Alan, established the Pepper- Giberson Endowed Chair in Environmental Studies, which honors Professor Emeritus James Pepper, who mentored the Gibersons’ son, Erik (College Eight ’94). A longtime volunteer in the public schools, Giberson has also served on the boards of directors of a number of organizations dedicated to environmental conservation and education. Legislative Day in Sacramento; Crowell (Cowell ’77) supported student scholarships through the UCSC Alumni Association Scholarship Fund and the Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Awards Program; and Hyman lent support to the UC Reserve System and the campaign to build UCSC’s new Music Center. 19
