“ Several years ago, I was contacted
by Dr. Marat Yusupov,
a Russian scientist who had
obtained the first crystals of
the whole ribosome.Yusupov
expressed interest in joining my
research group, looking to solve
the structure of the ribosome by
X-ray crystallography.Through
normal channels of applying for
a grant to support him, we would
have waited up to a year for funding,
and Yusupov likely would
have gone elsewhere. Sinsheimer
Chair funds enabled me to immediately
guarantee Yusupov the
possibility of a position. He ultimately
joined our group, and we
went on to solve the structure.”

The Importance of Endowed Chairs
The endowed or named
chair is one of higher
education’s most enduring
traditions, dating back
some 500 years to Oxford
University. UC Santa Cruz
now has 13 endowed
chairs, which are essential
for attracting top faculty and students
and helping the campus sustain
its commitment to excellence.
One of the campus’s
earliest endowed
chairs, the Robert L.
Sinsheimer Chair in
Molecular Biology,
is held by Professor
Harry F. Noller,
the world’s leading
expert on ribosomes.
The UC Presidential Chair (1981)
Supported by the UC President through
an endowment established by the UC
Regents to honor distinguished faculty at
the ten UC campuses, encourage new or
interdisciplinary programs, and enhance
existing academic programs. Current Co-
Chairs: David Haussler, Professor of
Computer Science, and David C. Hoy,
Professor of Philosophy.
The Alfred E. Heller Chair
in Agroecology (1982)
Established by Alfred E. Heller to support
research, teaching, and public service
related to the application of biological
and ecological principles of agrosystem
management and long-term sustainability.
Current Chair: Stephen R. Gliessman,
Professor of Environmental Studies
The Robert L. Sinsheimer Chair
in Molecular Biology (1987)
Established by Arthur and Carol Graham
to support the research and teaching of
an eminent UCSC molecular biologist and
to honor Robert L. Sinsheimer, Professor
Emeritus of Biology. Current Chair:

Cell, and Developmental Biology.
The Jack Baskin Chair
in Computer Engineering (1988)
Established by Jack Baskin to support the
work of a distinguished UCSC faculty
member and foster teaching and research
in the field of computer engineering.

Professor of Computer Engineering.
The UC Santa Cruz Foundation
Chair in Psychology (1995)
Established with private donations, UC
Santa Cruz Foundation funds, and chancellor’s
discretionary funds to support
teaching, research, and public service
related to psychology. Current Chair:
Barbara Rogoff, Professor of Psychology.
The Pepper-Giberson Endowed Chair
in Environmental Studies (1995)
Established by Alan G. and Margaret
Lyons Giberson to support the faculty
and programs of the UCSC Environmental
Studies Department and to honor
James E. Pepper, Professor Emeritus
of Environmental Studies. Current Chair:
Daniel M. Press, Associate Professor
of Environmental Studies.
The Neufeld-Levin Holocaust
Endowed Chair (1995)
Established by Anne Neufeld Levin to
support interdisciplinary teaching, research,
and public education related to
the issues and circumstances surrounding
the Holocaust. Current Co-Chairs:
Murray Baumgarten, Professor of English
and Comparative Literature, and Peter
Kenez, Professor of History.
The Patricia and Rowland Rebele
Chair in Art History (1996)
Established by Patricia and Rowland
Rebele to support the appointment of a
distinguished faculty member and fund
other activities that strengthen UCSC’s
Art History Department and promote col-
laboration with the larger Santa Cruz
community. Chair to be appointed.
The Chandra Bhandari Endowed Chair
in India Studies (1997)
Established by Narpat and Chandra
Bhandari (through the Bhandari
Foundation) to support an interdisciplinary
approach to studying Indian
cultures around the world. Chair
to be appointed.
The Ida Benson Lynn Endowed Chair
in Ocean Health (1998)
Established by Ida Benson Lynn’s family
to support a UCSC faculty member’s
teaching, public service, and research
pertaining to the health of the world’s
oceans. Current Chair: Terrie M. Williams,
Associate Professor of Ecology and
Evolutionary Biology.
The Narinder Singh Kapany Chair
in Optoelectronics (1999)
Established by Narinder and Satinder
Kapany to support research and teaching
in the field of optoelectronics, the use of
light in high-speed telecommunications
and data communications. Chair to
be appointed.
The Henry Bachmann Endowed Chair
in Astronomical Instrumentation (2000)
Established by C. Donald and Sally
Bachman Allen in memory of Sally’s
grandfather, Henry Bachmann, to support
UCSC graduate students specializing in
astronomical instrument development
and installation. Current Chair: Joseph S.
Miller, Director, UC Observatories/Lick
Observatory; Professor of Astronomy and
Astrophysics.
The Kamil and Talat Hasan Endowed
Chair in Classical Indian Music (2000)
Established by Kamil and Talat Hasan
to support the appointment of a distinguished
faculty member and to provide
ongoing support for UCSC’s programs
in Indian arts and classical music. Chair
to be appointed.
