AN ABSOLUTELY
EXCEPTIONAL HORSE
Corona and Sandra Auffarth. Photo: Brandel
A victory and a second place in the division for 5-year olds, a second place in the
division for six-year olds and a total of eleven horses in the final of both age groups:
Hanover not only provided the largest but also the most successful contingent at the
Bundeschampionate for event horses.
By Rolf Hillmann

Heavenly late-summer weather in September,
excellent footing and demanding but not scary
courses – Sunday being the final day at the Bundeschampionate
for Germany’s event horses promised
first-rate competition of highly talented horses
based on the above described excellent
conditions. The federal trainer could not stop raving
in the end. Team Olympic champion and bronze
medal winner Sandra Auffarth made him rave at
the Olympic Games in London four weeks ago; and
now she has done it again with her presentation of
five-year old Corona by Contendro/Garibaldi II, a
Hanoverian clearly born with a special talent for
eventing. The mare finished the final qualification
in second place. With a jumping score of 8,0 and a
dressage score of 8,8 Corona had very good prerequisites
when she entered the cross-country course
on Sunday. The spectators witnessed the finest
that eventing has to offer. The pair completed the
course almost effortlessly with impressive jumping
ability, a fantastic canter, securely on the aids, always
in rhythm and a hind leg that has no equal
and all even though it was rather demanding for
horses at this young age. Three expert judges including
federal trainer Hans Melzer awarded the ride
with the dream score of 9,5. It meant the clear
victory as this score weighed double. Melzer described
the round with these words, “It could hardly
have been better.” A few days later he was still
impressed by what he had seen, “An absolutely
exceptional horse that has gone through a terrific
development and still has much development
ahead of him. Horse and rider are an ideal fit. A
championship horse of the highest quality that
unites all parameters of an event horse: dressage
ability, powerful and secure jumping, great ambition,
a phenomenal canter and incredible rideability.”
Incredible attitude
The second-placed rider in the division for five-year
old event horses called Nadine Marzahl also rode
a Hanoverian; It was the chestnut mare Valentie by
Valentino/Varus. This mare showed off her qualities,
her incredible attitude, a big heart and a very
special interior. The rather small mare impressed
with her overview, her good balance, great jumping
ability and a steadiness that was to be seen
again that day. “The horse is equipped with a very
useful canter. She appears a bit homely but she
picks up points with her enormous willingness, her
strong nerves and her rideability,” said Hans Melzer.
The pair scored 7,1 in dressage which lies
below her possibilities and received the highest
score of the day in jumping. Everything went like
clockwork in the final on Sunday. The judging team
awarded the ride with a score of 9,3. The spectators
could not but have the impression that this
mare could have added another round without
loosing her oversight or her rhythm.
Six Hanoverian horses qualified for the final in the
five-year old division including the mare Butt’s
Avondale by Nobre xx/Heraldik xx. The name’s prefix
states that the mare is a product out of the legendary
damline of Friedrich Butt. She won the final
qualification with a dressage score of 7,0 and
a jumping score of 8,4; this allowed for high hopes
for the final. On Sunday Hans Melzer told her rider
Anna Siemer that the ride was just “too pleasant”.
The quality of the almost 100%-Thoroughbred
was clearly visible at all times; the federal trainer
however wanted the ride to be bolder. He criticized
the long ways and the ‘safe’ riding. Anna Siemer
and Butt’s Avondale received a score of 9,0 for
great rideability, good bascule jumping ability and
a solid canter but in the end the score was only
enough for an ungrateful forth place for this picture-book
event horse.
High criteria for qualification
The prerequisites for participation in Warendorf in
the division for six-year olds are placements in Llevel
or one-star competitions. The group of participants
is considerably smaller than in the five-year
old division. The high qualification criteria may be
the reason for that or the fact that that promising
German event horses have become a much soughtafter
commodity.
Sport
Kalle ridden by Sara Algotsson-
Ostholt became Reserve Champion
in the six-year old division.
Corona – the crown for
Diedrich Meyer
Bundeschampion Corona (Spanish for
crown) literally became the crown of her
breeders achievements; her breeder Diedrich
Meyer is from Koehlen near Bad Bederkesa.
“I have had horses participate in the
Bundeschampionate three times but this is
the first time I have had a winner,“ Diedrich
Meyer is delighted. Everyone in the stable
of Family Auffarth believes the five-year old
mare is capable of following into the
footsteps of Olympic horse Opgun Louvo.
“This one or none,” Sandra Auffarth supposedly
whispered into her father’s ear last
November on Verden’s auction. The mare
had already been in the barn of Family Auffarth
to be lunged as a two-and-a-half year
old. Father Karl-Heinz and the current team
Olympic champion Sandra had come to Verden
because of a different horse from Diedrich
Meyer’s barn. They had no idea that
Corona was being offered for sale. They
changed their mind on the spot and bid as
long as it took. “I’ll never give this one up
again,” Sandra Auffarth breathed a sigh of
relief after winning the bidding duel.
Six Hanoverians qualified for the final; in the end
four went on course; it was hard - some even went
so far to say that the course was too hard! The
Rhineland gelding Sunny Row W by Sandro Classic/Painter’s
Row xx and his rider Jens Hoffrogge
won with a score of 9,4 followed by the Hanoverian
Kalle by King Kolibri/Really Fabulous xx in second
place. The silver medal winner from London
Sara Algotsson-Ostholt from Sweden rode Kalle.
Husband Frank Ostholt who watched the ride of
his wife under the severe influence of an adrenalin
rush is his owner. He really did not have to worry at
all though. Kalle exhibited enormous ambition,
high performance willingness and an attribute that
is crucial for event horses: He always wants to get
to the other side! Hans Melzer described the horse
as one that “will definitely make his way, no matter
who rides him, Sara or Frank.”
The son of King Kolibri erased any doubt about his
quality on final Sunday after a dressage score of
8,0 and a jumping score of 7,1: The bay convinced
with his useful canter, rideability and his adroit and
secure jumping that earned him a 9,0 which was
the third-best cross-country score and second
place overall.
Corona is not a novice. She completed a
very good performance test (8,0; 8,0; jumping
8,5 twice), was accepted into the Program
for Hanoverian Jumper Horse Breeding
and won some events in her first year
of competition with rider Juliane Kirsch after
having delivered a foal by Uccello in the
spring of 2011. The foal sold on the elite
spring auction of the same year to Hessian.
Dam Gerona by Garibaldi II/Lombard (line
of Blenna 1870, Detje, Dreck Harburg, Area
Lüneburg. Soliman de Hus descends out of
the same line.) delivered 17 foals on the
farm of Diedrich Meyer. Last year she had to
be put to sleep because of old age while
she still had a foal at her side. Gerona
achieved numerous victories and earned
multiple titles with daughter Liane Roes
(nee Meyer) as her rider in spite of her responsibilities
as a broodmare. Gerona’s record
as a broodmare: three auction horses,
four state’s premium mares, six successful
show horses including Ricarda (VA) by
Ramiro’s Son II, internationally successful
with rider Philipp Weishaupt, and Romantico
by Ramiro’s Son II and dressage success
at the S-level with Robert Korsch.
After a forth place in the final qualification Euroridings
Chracker Jack by Concinales xx/Esculdo II
and rider Andreas Dibowski dropped behind a bit
on Sunday. The dressage and jumping scores allowed
for the presumption that the horse has the
potential to improve in all three disciplines. Nonetheless
the judges saw a horse for “international
competition”; a horse equipped with power
and a good canter, a horse that impressed with
good jumping ability.
Federal trainer Melzer attested the five-year old
division a quality that has never been reached before.
He regretted that horses with a score of 8,5
after the qualification did not make it into the final
because of the large number of entries and the limited
number of allowed final participants. “We
need to rethink this fact.” He asked to correct this
modus – as well as the admittance for six-year
olds, “A result from a qualification should be sufficient;
it should not have to be a placement. We
would then have more competitors in this age
group again.”n
Gerona’s dam was Legende by Lombard.
She was - generously speaking - 1,60 m; in
other words she was a bit small just like so
many Löwe xx-descendants. “She made up
for it with her ambition and her disposition,”
Diedrich Meyer remembers. He bought
her from breeder Mattfeld in Ankelohe. Legende
delivered seven fillies; five received
the state’s premium award. “She passed on
her spirit to all her descendants,” Meyer
knows just too well where to find the origin
of Corona’s performance willingness. Rolf
What a champion!
Franziskus advanced and was the one to steal hearts which earned him gold at the
Bundeschampionate for German Riding Horses. Two other Hanoverians won bronze
medals.
By Julia Martin
The ingredients of the Bundeschampionat for
the German Riding Horse in Warendorf consist
of young horses that inspire, an attentive audience
that always questions the judges’ evaluations and
then either accept them with applause or call out
in disapproval and a commentator, who year after
year raves when its time to discuss the finalists. A
perfect fit for this setting is the four-year old stallion
Franziskus by Fidertanz/Alabaster. He conquered
the hearts of every spectator from the very first
moment onwards. Johanna Klippert had already
presented the privately owned sire of the stallion
station Holkenbrink in an exemplary fashion in the
qualification. He impressed with his radiance and
his incredibly elastic basic gaits to win his debut in
Warendorf with a considerable advantage and a
score of 8,75. Thunderous applause for the spectators’
favorite! A total of 13 stallions participated in
the qualification, three of which carried the Hanoverian
hip brand. Next to Franziskus, Quasar de
Charry also caught attention as the typy chestnut
always seems to do. At only a few months this son
of Quarterback/Wolkentanz sold on the foal auction
in 2008 for a record price of 120,000.00 Euro
to Family Hereth in Baar. He received a premium
award at the licensing in 2010. Susan Pape presented
the stallion in Warendorf where he received
top scores for his canter. The beautiful chestnut entered
the final with a final score of 8,42 and third
place. The third Hanoverian participant in the final
was the dark-brown halfbred Suncirco presented
by Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn. The athletic son of
Sunlight xx/Velten Third showed an excellent walk
(9,0). This pair did not qualify for the next round
with a final score of only 7,67.
The final
Franziskus repeated his performance of the qualification
in the final part A: he just fascinated everybody!
The judges’ commentator Dr. Dietrich Plewa
commended, “This horse leaves nothing to be
desired in respect to his modern appearance. He
has a beautiful face, steals everybody’s heart and
has a radiance that can hardly be surpassed.” The
powerful and elastic trot with its almost unlimited
shoulder freedom and active hind leg received a
score of 9,5; the uphill and ground-covering canter
received a 9,0. Franziskus’ walk could have been
more relaxed as he was impressed by Warendorf’s
surroundings. Therefore the judges scored the walk
and the age-appropriate level of training with respect
to the criteria of the training scale with ‘only’
a 8,0 and 8,5. The impeccable exterior and the
harmonious presentation each received the score
of 9,0. Franziskus and Johanna Klippert took the
lead with 53 points and were almost unsurpassable
after this performance. It was now up to the
guest riders Uta Gräf and Anja Rietbrock to select
the new Bundeschampion. Both trainers obviously
enjoyed riding the impressive dark bay. Whilst the
visitors honored the rides with lavish applause
Bronze for Quasar de Charry and
Susan Pape.
both riders awarded the stallion 19,50 points. A
total of 72,50 points was the final result: Franziskus
is the Bundeschampion of 2012!
Hanover received yet another medal in the finale.
Quasar de Charry and Susan Pape convinced in the
final part A. Dr. Dietrich Plewa summarized, “This
stallion’s sire stamped his exterior. He has a lot of
radiance, a distinctly beautiful face and a correct
foundation.” The athlete received a 9,0 for his
energetic and ground-covering canter and an 8,5
for his powerful and impressive trot. He received
the same scores for his conformation and the harmony
of the presentation. The three judges awarded
the walk and the age-appropriate completion
of the criteria of the training scale with an 8,0
each. Quasar de Charry qualified as the third candidate
for the final part B with 50,5 points. Uta
Graef and Anja Rietbrock judged the feeling the
chestnut gave them under saddle with a total
score of 17,50: Quasar de Charry and Susan Pape
won the bronze medal.
Bronze for Dancer
25 four-year olds participated in the qualification
for mares and geldings – almost twice as many
horses as in the stallion division. Hanover had the
largest representation with six candidates. The Warendorfer
debut came to an end on a score of 7,75,
10th place for Don Hitmeyer by Diamond Hit/Lauries
Crusador xx and rider Lena Stegemann. De
Nino by Don Schufro/Sandro Hit and rider Isabell
Bache finished the qualification in 14th position
just like Devino by Dancie/Wolkentanz who was
also presented by Isabell Bache from Norway.
Dance in Black by Don Frederico/Lauries Crusador
xx and Ann-Christin Wienkamp had a beautiful
performance in the first qualification: It was relaxed,
content, consistently diligent and rhythmical.
The gelding improved in the final part A finishing
in third place. Dr. Dietrich Plewa
commended, “Dance in Black is a riding horse of
exceptional quality. His trot is equipped with unlimited
impulsion.” Both guest riders Rietbrock and
Gräf liked the black dancer a lot and gave him a
combined score of 19,0, the almost maximum total:
Dance in Black and Ann-Christin Wienkamp
received a final score of 50,50 and won the bronze
medal.
St. Pr. A. Donna Felice by Don Frederico/White Star
was one of the highly sought-after top sellers at
Verden’s elite auction of spring 2012. She found a
new home in Austria. Angelica Bystroem presented
the mare that appeared to be more mature and
correctly trained. The pair finished in fifth place.
Susan Pape rode a second candidate; it was the
chestnut mare Scara Boa by Scolari/Wolkenstein II,
into 6th place in the A-final.
The three-year olds
Six of 19 three-year old stallions that fought for
the championship title carried the Hanoverian
brand: Fürst Nymphenburg II by Florencio/De Niro
finished the qualification in forth place as the best

Hanoverian with his rider Andreas Müller. This pair
did not participate in the final due to an injury.
Nymphenburgs For You by For Compliment/Rohdiamant
with his rider Tessa Frank and premium sire
Bodyguard by Burlington/Pik L. with rider Jana
Freund were both in sixth position after the qualification
with a score of 8,17. Both did better in the
A-final. The rhythmical and ground-covering walk
(9,5) was the highlight in the presentation of the
big Bodyguard. Jana Freund and Bodyguard finished
the competition in forth place with a score of
51,5. Nymphenburgs For You and Tessa Frank followed
with a score of 50,5 in fifth position. Dancing
World by Dancier and rider Sandra Frieling finished
the qualification in ninth place. The
black-brown San Antonio by Soliman de Hus/Feiner
Stern who was a participant in Verden’s 127th
elite auction in October and his rider Philipp Severit
finished on a final score of 7,75 in 13th position.
The best Hanoverian out of 18 four-year old mares
and geldings was Lionella by Londontime/Corradino.
The attractive chestnut mare that appeared to
be properly on the aids at all times is a member of
the current elite auction, too. Andreas Mueller rode
the athlete into third position in the qualification.
The pair finished the final part A in sixth place.
Again the Hanoverian Association had the largest
number of participants. Five other aspirants competed
in the qualification including Sierra Tiquilla
by Scolari/Conteur with rider Anett Müller who finished
the riding horse class in 10th place. If you
The dark bay dancer
Franziskus was born at the farm of Family
Albers in Löningen in May of 2008. “You
could tell that he was very special and had
an incredible presence from day one,” Elisabeth
Albers remembers. His dam Antara descends
from Bundeschampion Alabaster.
Bred to De Niro, she produced the licensed
stallion Dementi who is a successful dressage
competitor at the S-level.
The dam line is founded on the Irish Thoroughbred
dam Daffy-Toban xx by Go Tobann
xx/Mustang xx. The breeding farm Albers
has fostered this line that also produced
Celle’s state stud sire Winston since the mid
seventies. Dam Antara is still a member of
Family Albers’ breeding program as well as
granddam Desiree by Rubinstein. “We bred
Desiree one more time to Alabaster to hopefully
get one more full-sister to Antara,” Eli-
Sierra Tiquilla will also be a participant. n
sabath Albers expresses her pride for her
breeding products. Franziskus has three
younger full-siblings. “All three are exceptional
horses that catch your attention right
away.”
Franziskus was sold to the Dutch breeder
Reesink at only fourteen days of age. He had
his first public appearance at the qualification
for the German Foal Championships on
the Farm Kasselmann. The dark bay Dancer
was brilliant and won unchallenged at the
final in Lienen. Stallion manager Wilhelm
Holkenbrink had already discovered the colt
when the qualification took place in Hagen.
Two years later he was able to purchase
Franziskus and presented him at the North-
Rhine Westphalian main licensing in Münster-Handorf
where he was awarded the title
premium sire. The Hanoverian Association
also licensed Franziskus shortly thereafter.
Sport
Franziskus successfully completed his 30-day
test in Münster-Handorf in 2011 with brilliant
performances: He received the training
score of 9,0 for his trot, canter and rideability.
The guest riders scored his rideability with
a 9,50. He is already setting the standard in
the breeding chute: One of his first sons also
five-year old Westphalian daughter of Damon Hill
called Damon’s Delorange to victory. Kristina Sprehe
also succeeded. She had a start-to-finish victory
on six-year old Fürst Fugger by Fürst Heinrich/
rode a five-year old and two six-year olds and finished
the final for six-year olds with a sixth place.
Bobcat by Breitling/Silvano with rider Isabel Bache
and Don Darius by Don Frederico/Markus Deak xx
with Mike Habermann won bronze medals for Hanover.
The final qualification for six-year olds had already
started on Wednesday. Hanover had the strongest
contingent with 19 participants out of a total of
fifty. Only Bailador de Amor by Breitling/Dimaggio
with Johannes Westendarp qualified for the final
after the demanding test at the M-level. The Oldenburg
Fürst Fugger and Kristina Sprehe had already
won this qualification. Three other Hanoverians
were able to qualify for the final round via the
small final. Flynn PCH by Falsterbo/Walt Disney
with Marcus Hermes placed second; Depardieu by
Don Frederico/Weltmeyer with Rudolf Widmann
placed forth and Showtime by Sandro Hit/Rotspon
with Dorothee Schneider followed in fifth. Showtime
was the best-placed Hanoverian (6th) in the
final round followed by Flynn (8th), Dapardieu
(10th) and Bailador de Amor (12th). There were17
finalists.
A touch of Olympia was offered before the final
started when Stella Charlott Roth presented Olympic
mount Diva Royal by Don Frederico/Warkant
under the direction of Dorothee Schneider. This public
training demonstration clearly showed the talent
of the rider and the quality of the horse and
also the outstanding training from the basics to
perfect Grand Prix-movements.
One could not avoid getting the impression that
many horses that competed next had a hard time
with the demands; this negatively reflected on the
level of quality of this contingent. A reason may be
the jump from the L-level to the M-level with it’s
lateral movements and four flying changes both of
which present a great challenge to young horses.
They must have performed this in a specific qualification
already. Furthermore many trainers do not
ask or do not want to ask their protégés to perform
M-level movements so early on in the year.
This was a reunion from last year for 15 of the
participants. It was interesting that most of them
(9) qualified directly for the final including five that
were finalists in the five-year old Championships in
2011. This shows continued positive development
in their training. Bundeschampionate can be viewed
as a turntable for the market. Once you made it
and have performed on this platform you have
good arguments for a lucrative business and new
owners and/or riders may have their very own
plans that may not include making another appearance
in Warendorf.
The number of entries in the division for five-year
olds was slightly higher than in the division for six-

year olds; the number of actual competitors was
about the same. Hanover and Oldenburg had the
largest representation with 19 participants each.
The qualification on Thursday promised to be an
exciting competition. The promise came true. The
forth rider in the event set a standard: Isabel Bache
and Bobcat received a score of 8,4, which meant
forth place and a direct qualification for the final.
Her boss Holga Finken surpassed her by twotenths
and qualified the chestnut Domenikus by
Don Marco/Rosentau with a third place. Other Hanoverians
that qualified directly were Santiago by
Stedinger/Dacaprio with rider Christian Flamm,
Doubleyou W by Don Romantic/Rohdiamant with
rider Laura Stigler and Kanganya’s Summer Girl by
San Remo/Matcho AA with rider Anna-Sophie Fiebelkorn.
Helen Langehanenberg was in the lead for quite
some time with her Oldenburg Filaro by Fidertanz
until Beatrice Buchwald with her Rhineland mount
Lord Carnaby drew level thanks to a high trot
score (with a bit tight neck). Both ladies had to
give precedence to Ann-Christin Wienkamp and
her Westphalian reserve world champion Revolverheld.
Helen Langehanenberg returned to the show
ring as the second to last competitor in the qualification.
Her mount stood in total contrast to the
leading horse. The light and long-legged chestnut
mare Damon’s Delorange with her outstanding basic
gaits became the clear winner of the qualification.
The quality of the five-year olds was higher than
that of the six-year olds; this reflected in the scores.
While an 8,0 was enough for direct qualification to
the final for six-year olds, the five-year olds had to
obtain a score of at least 8,4 or better. The average
score for direct qualification in the six-year old division
was 8,23; it was 8,62 in the five-year old
division.
The small final turned into a pursuit of top placements.
The winner of the small final must be highlighted.
His score in the qualification was not as
high because of his appearance that seemed a bit
less mature: Don Darius by Don Frederico/Marcus
Deak xx with rider Mike Habermann finished with
a first-class presentation in Warendorf on Sunday
that was awarded with a 9,0 four times by the
judges. His final overall score of 8,8 earned him
the bronze medal. This bay stallion sold on Verden’s
stallion sales in 2009 to breeder Otto-Rudolf
Fuchs. Don Darius stands at the State Stud Celle on
the insemination station Adelheidsdorf. Isabel Bache
finished on Sunday also winning bronze with
Bobcat by Breitling with the same overall score of
8,8.
... and Bobcat and Isabel Bache.… Photo: Beelitz
Damon’s Delorange by Damon Hill called this final
her own! She was the first competitor. Her dance
performance earned her the record score of 9,8
which only dual Hanoverian champion Placido
with rider Dr. Ulf Möller had received in the past. In
2000 and 2001 there was only one score; now the
final score consists of five part evaluations.
Damon’s Delorange received a 10,0 for her walk,
her submissiveness (throughness) and her overall
impression: unreservedly a very special triumph!
Domenikus with rider Holga Finken finished the
final in sixth place after having placed second in
the small final. Sandra Frieling and her mount Don
Noblesse by Dancier/Don Davidoff shared seventh
place and Christian Flamm on Santiago by Stedinger/Dacaprio
finished in ninth position. n
Even though a top result was missing several
excellent horses with the Hanoverian brand
competed in Warendorf in the discipline of jumping.
15 Hanoverians participated in the first qualification
in the division for five-year old jumpers. It
was the third highest contingent of all German
breed associations. Only Holstein and Westphalia
had larger contingents with 30 and 19 horses. The
number of participants in the division for six-year
old jumpers was similarly composed with Holstein
leading the way with 28 horses followed by Westphalia
with 20 horses and Hanover with 19 horses.
Hanoverian horses obtained excellent successes in
the individual qualifications. Argelith Squid by Salito/Gibraltar
- in 2011 third place in the five-year
old division – pleased this year too with his rider
Eva Bitter. The pair finished the first qualification in
second place with a notable score of 9,0. Eva Bitter
also received the score of 9,0 with her second
horse Figari by For Edition/Drosselklang in the division
for five-year olds; this meant the victory in this
division. Maurice Tebbel received an even higher
score on Stakko by Stakkato/Embassy. The stallion
was victorious in the division for six-year olds. A
total of five five-year old and six six-year old Hanoverians
qualified for the finals on Sunday. Hanover
had the second largest number of qualified horses
in both age groups.
The final classes were extremely demanding as always.
The horse that became the standard in the
group of five-year olds and by which all other horses
were measured was the Holstein Captain Sparrow
by Cormint/Barnaul xx. He showed two equally
impressive and identical rounds under his rider
Henrik von Eckermann; both were awarded with a
score of 8,8 by the judging team. Commentator
Joachim Geilfus especially commended the balance,
ease and rideability in both presentations. DSP
Araldik by Askari/Heraldik xx became Reserve
Champion; a great success for the Association of
the German Sporthorse (DSP). Dual Olympic champion
Michael Jung presented third place-winner
Cardea by Caretino/Capitol who is a Holstein
mare.
The best Hanoverian in the five-year old group was
Messenger by Montender/Baloubet de Rouet with
rider Florian Meyer zu Hartum. The pair finished in
ninth place. This privately owned stallion with lots
of potential and a fascinating technique impressed
in the first round of the finals earning him a score
of 8,7. Two jumping faults in the second round eliminated
every hope for a medal. Caspari by Cassus/Calypso
II made a good impression from a Hanoverian
point of view. The grey gelding had a
strong first round under his rider Jan-Philipp Weichert.
Without the jumping fault his base score
would have most likely been higher which would
then have allowed him participation in the second
round. He finished in 16th place. Success by Stolzenberg/Acord
II and Philipp Schober encountered
very similar circumstances. The stallion had a very
convincing and uniform first round. However one
jumping fault reduced his score to 7,8 which meant
18th place. Eva Bitter had bad luck with Celle’s
state stud sire Inliner by Iberio/Sao Paulo. Some
insiders considered the stallion to be one of the
favorites. A fall in the first qualification shattered
all championship hopes.
Technique and potential
Hanover saw its best representative finishing in
tenth place in the division for six-year olds. Sansi-

ar by Stakkato ridden by the new European Junior
Champion Maurice Tebbel had a very good first
round and received a score of 8,7. The mare Sansibar
left nothing to be desired in respect to technique
and potential. The pair had one jumping
fault in the jump-off against the clock, hence 10th
place.
Lotta by Landor S/Graf Grannus and Alexander
Duffy just missed the jump-off with a score of 8,3
for the first round. Nonetheless the mare impressed
with her technique and her cautious style
at a fence. The pair finished the competition in
fourteenth place. Argelith Squid finished in seventeenth
position. With a base score of 8,5, everybody
could have enjoyed watching this incredible
jumping talent perform in the jump-off. One unfortunate
jumping fault reduced the score to 8,0 and
that was not enough to qualify. This was the final
ride of a weekend in Warendorf that was overshadowed
by bad luck for his rider Eva Bitter who has
been so successful on Hanoverian horses at several
Bundeschampionate in the past.
The Westphalian stallion Crespo PKZ by Comet
Obolensky/Landadel with rider Toni Haßsmann became
the Bundeschampion of the six-year olds.
The pair were the first competitors in the jump-off
and produced the fastest ride. The new Reserve
Champion Cassija S by Carinjo/Cassini I who is a
mare from Zweibruecken and her rider Hendrik
Dowe followed with only 4/100th time difference.
Gerd Koenemann rode Cornetto by Cornet Obolensky/Polydor
into third place.
A farewell with applause
Before the jump-off rider Eva Bitter and thousands
of spectators bid farewell to legendary jumper producer
Stakkato with standing ovations at a place
where the stallion’s career had begun in 1998
when he became the Bundeschampion of the fiveyear
olds. The location and the time were ideally
selected for another reason, too Stakkato took first
place this year as the producer of the greatest
number of participants with a total of 16 children
and grandchildren.
This brings us to two statistically interesting trends.
In the past years three or four stallions have produced
the majority of jumper horses that have
competed in Warendorf; while this year – except
for above-mentioned Stakkato – the picture has
been clearly more balanced. Only the number of
Cornet Obolensky’s descendants had two digits
(10 children and grandchildren)! It also is noteworthy
that the Westphalian Cristallo sired three
5-year olds all of which participated in the final. n
Thank you
Stakkato!
He is the poster child for the modern Hanoverian
jumper horses: Stakkato. He obtained countless
successes with Eva Bitter. He was retired from sport
during the Bundeschampionate in Warendorf.
By Julia Martin
Stakkato was born in 1993 on the farm of
August Meyer in Uenzen. His sire Spartan
with his dual predisposition descends out of
the ideal combination of Servus x Gotthard.
His dam Pia by Pygmalion had jumping successes
up to the L-level. She received a score
of 10,0 for her jumping in her mare performance
test. The pedigree also reflects refining
blood as well as the legendary Gotthard
once again. Stakkato impressed with his
spectacular free-jumping performance at the
Approval in Verden. Former state stud manager
Dr. Burchard Bade bought him for Celle’s
first lot. Stakkato completed his performance
test as best jumper. His victory in the division
for five-year old jumpers at the Bundescham-
pionate in Warendorf in 1998 made Stakkato
the poster child for the Hanoverian jumper
horse breeding. He was awarded the silver
medal as a six-year old. Eva Bitter is the person
who is connected to all of Stakkato’s successes
over fences. She accompanied the bay
throughout his entire sporthorse career. As a
matter of fact she competed in Warendorf in
1998 for the first time and has been a regular
at the championships since. Her mount in
1998 was Stakkato. The association’s President
Manfred Schäfer described the relationship
in his encomium while standing in
Warendorf’s jumper ring, “Stakkato and Eva
Bitter are an ideal combination which made
the competitive successes happen.” The pair
Sport
A jumper horse was retired from competition
time: Stakkato and Eva Bitter took their final
victory lap in Warendorf. Photo: Kanz
won gold at the German Championships for
female riders in 2003 and 2010; they won
silver in 2004. In addition to numerous international
top placements including Grand Prix
victories Stakkato was a member of the Nation
Prize equip five times. Eva Bitter who was
visibly touched declared, “Stakkato is the
horse of my life. We celebrated our first grand
victory in Warendorf and therefore I wanted
to retire him from competition here, too.”
Just like the sire….
Stakkato is not just a top performer himself;
his descendants do just as well. For instance
Rückenwind with Holger Wulschner, Sambuca
with Eva Bitter, Souvenir with Philipp
Weishaupt or Satisfaction FRH with Marco
Kutscher - they all successfully compete at
international level. More than 1,100 Stakkato-offspring
are registered with the Hanoverian
Association. 41 sons are licensed in Hanover
including Stanley who competed at the
Bundeschampionate in 2011 under Eva Bitter,
Ukato who competes internationally with
the Dutch rider Willem Greve, Celle’s State
Stud sire Stolzenberg and last but not least
Stakkato Gold who triumphs in S-level classes.
54 Stakkato daughters received the
state’s premium award; 161 descendants
were auction participants in Verden.
Stakkato has held the top spot in the breed
value estimation of the Hanoverian Association
as well as the German Equestrian Federation
for years. The Hanoverian Association
awarded Stakkato the title “Hanoverian Stallion
Of The Year” for his outstanding accomplishments
as a competitor and as a sire back
in 2007. Manfred Schäfer summarized,
“Stakkato opened a new chapter for
Hanover’s jumper horse breeding program.
He stimulated the international reputation of
the Hanoverian breed.” The producer will enjoy
his retirement at the facility of Eva Bitter
in Bad Essen. Family Bitter built an insemination
station just for him to make his semen
available to breeders. State stud manager Dr.
Axel Brockmann commented, “We are delighted
that Stakkato will stay with Eva Bitter.
They have a special bond we do not want to
separate.” n
“D as in
dressage “
D as in dressage – A success story in the
dressage arenas worldwide started with
“Donnerwetter”. It is a success story that seeks
its equal. This fact fills the heart of one breeder
especially with great pride. His name is Heinrich
Neven.
By Britta Züngel
Heinrich Neven also successfully
competed foundation mare Lilli in
jumper competitions. Photo: privat
18 The Hanoverian 10|2012
Heinrich Neven studies the list of Olympic dressage
competitors with extreme precision. He
marks all horses that carry “his” Donnerwetter” in
the pedigree with bright markers. In London this
was as easy as it was impressive: All German riders
rode horses whose names started with a D: Desperados
FRH, Diva Royal, Damon Hill NRW and Dablino
FRH. In addition there are other top horses like
Don Auriello, Digby or Donnperignon. The list continues
at the federal championships where the Dblood
dominates in the division for riding horses
and in the division for dressage horses. “That makes
me very proud for obvious reasons,” Heinrich
Neven (73) says almost timidly with a sparkle in
his eyes. The stallion Donnerwetter was born on his
farm in Wulfsen in 1977. You can find his name in
almost every important pedigree today through his
son Donnerhall.
Donnerwetter was the second foal of Melli by Matador/Der
Löwe xx. “He was an exquisite foal right
away being elastic throughout his entire body and
swinging over the back.” The renowned breeder
and stallion manager Günther Pape bought the
black colt. Heinrich Neven often drove to Hemmoor
at the time; he attended the pre-selection
and then Donnerwetter’s licensing in Verden. “He
was pretty small at the licensing but he caught
everybody’s attention because he was so supple.”
Otto Schulte-Frohlinde bought him for 65,000 Euros
for Grönwohldhof. Donnerwetter started on his
journey to Grand Prix with Karin and Herbert Rehbein.
He set a monument for himself with his son
Donnerhall. Two parties were overjoyed when the
Heinrich Neven from Wulfsen. Photo: Züngel
spectacular liver chestnut became champion stallion
at the DLG in Hanover in 1986; they were
Donnerhall’s breeder Otto Görtner and Heinrich
Neven. Heinrich Neven’s father had bought
Donnerwetter’s granddam Lilli by Der Löwe xx/Altena
as a foal from Hermann Putensen in Westergellersen.
“The line was known for eager, workingwilling
and tough horses. In my estimation, Lilli
was the best Der Löwe xx-daughter. She pushed
off out of her hindquarters with beautiful energy.
Her dam’s sire Altena convinced with character
and strong nerves. He produced strength and working
willingness. He jumped well, too” Heinrich
Neven explains. The breeder also competed Lilli as
he always rode his own mares and never owned a
riding horse. They celebrated victories and placements
in the dressage arena, in stadium jumping
and in eventing. “I always rode the most difficult
horses.” Heinrich Neven smirks while remembering
his rides. “The tougher horses are the better
ones occasionally dump their riders. Many horses
can be corrected with patience and with riding
walk for long distances. You have to ride in walk
until the horse allows you to push it with your legs
and your seat. Those that buck can also jump.”
Blood-influenced, forward going horses
Lilli’s first foal was Sybille by Senegal, “Descendants
of Senegal were super riding horses. My
father favored blood-influenced and forward going
riding horses. I agree. A horse must be light-footed.

A horse should be able to dance while in-hand,”
so Heinrich Neven. Sibylle became the granddam
of Celle’s state stud sire Glückspilz by Glücksstern.
Five Matador-daughters followed. “They were all
very different from each other,” the breeder remembers.
“Melli was the best. We could have sold
her well but my father did not want to do that.” In
addition to Donnerwetter she delivered two state’s
premium mares and the L-level jumper Dobitos –
all of them by the sire Disput by Diskant/Amselkoenig
II. “That was one that always did what you
asked him to. He was always the one to fill in for
everyone in Celle.” Heinrich Neven liked that.
Grandfather Heinrich Neven started the ridinghorse
breeding program on the fifty-hectares farm
right outside of Hamburg’s doors between WWI
and WWII. “Even then he always tried to breed
black or black-brown horses. Those were easier to
sell,” Heinrich Neven remembers. He actually rode
the 25-kilometers with his mares and foals to the
foal market in Lüneburg to sell the horses to horsemen
from Mecklenburg; they then raised foals.
“My father bought his first own broodmare called
Schwertfee by Schwertgold/Almfeuer on the foal
auction in 1951. He always said that you judge a
horse from behind: ‘If nothing comes from behind,
nothing will happen in the front.’ That has never
changed.” Next to Lilli Schwertfee became one of
the foundation mares on Neven’s farm. Heinrich
Neven bred privately-owned stallion Graf Lehndorff
by Graf Dagobert/Lehnsherr who was born
1984 out of her line.
Performance willingness and strong nerves
“The character is important. It does not matter
what the horse looks like; it is important what is
inside the head. Character, performance willingness
and good nerves must be all right,” Heinrich
Neven says. He has thought about it, “We do not
need those that run in the way at the back of the
herd. They do not have enough guts.” For him
breeding means to select and not to multiply, “If it
is not good enough, you must part with it. If a horse
does not have a good character or is not rideable,
it must go and should not be used for breeding.
To breed with the wrong mare results in
procreating an undesirable attribute that will take
generations to get rid of in a line. I continued my
breeding program with the young mares and did
not hold on to the old ones.” The breeder is convinced
of the great importance of dam lines, “the
licensing committees should always keep these in
consideration when judging.” He is certain in respect
to Donnerwetter’s descendants,“All are fighters
and are good in the head. The damline made
sure of that!” And what deems important regarding
the exterior? He responds without hesitation,
“The frame is important. The hind legs must step
under the centre of gravity and the horses must
grow when they move.” There always used to be
about twenty horses on the farm of Heinrich Neven;
he took over the farm over from his father in
1970. “I rode and also taught young riders. They
rode our horses. If they were good enough, they
went to horse shows.” Heinrich Neven was on the
board of the Horse Breeding and Riding Club
Luhmühlen for more than 32 years; today he is an
honorary member. “The club was very small in the
beginning. We were good colleagues that stood up
for each other and we built up the club. ‘If it is
good, it comes from Luhmühlen.’ We always helped
each other and did a lot on an honorary basis,”
Heinrich Neven’s words are filled with passion.
“I have spent a lot of time on the road because of
horses. I saw the Thoroughbred sire Tamerlane xx
in England, the sire of Shogun xx. Or the foundation
sire Nimmerdor in the Netherlands. You have to
go everywhere and look and avoid becoming narrow-minded.
I had the opportunity to see the
French sire Jappeloup in close-up at the World
Equestrian Games in Stockholm. That was very
special. He was so cheerful. He was ridden in a way
that allowed for his cheerfulness to stay. I saw Lucinda
Prior-Palmer ride the then still young Be Fair
in the distance in Burghley. She rode during the
test on the racetrack smiling happily. Who does
that today? Be Fair became one of the best event
horses of his time, won Badminton in 1973 and
became European Champion in 1975,” the breeder
raves.
The push-off is important
It is quieter in Wulfsen today. Only two mares graze
in the rich fields being Greffina by Graf Lehndorff
and Danielle by De Niro, a granddaughter
and a great-granddaughter of Melli and both with
foals at side. Greffina’s foal Dorina by De Niro sold
to Switzerland on Verden’s elite foal auction two
weeks ago. Daughter Inga Hildebrandt has taken
over the breeding program. She lives in a newly
built house across the way with her husband and
two children. Chicken and ponies live in the fields
and on the paddocks. Heinrich Neven’s schedule
book is still pretty full though: Stallion pre-selection
and foal auction in Luhmühlen are next on the
agenda. “I only need to see a horse take a few
steps. The push-off is actually enough for me; it is
important. I defended my position in my breeding
program and never allowed myself to be diverted.
The future of horse breeding will be a tough
struggle. Breeders are well advised to take a good
look at the dame line,” Heinrich Neven looks
ahead. n
The 38th Elite Foal and Broodmare Auction presented
many changes; this increased the excitement
in Verden on the third weekend in August
even more. The political and economical signals
before the auction were not helpful at all. The auction
result must be viewed and evaluated in the
context with the entire economic situation.
Fundamentally the decisions made beforehand
were correct decisions benefiting the breeders.
Here for instance the modernized selection process
and the additional advertising measures. The collection
was diverse and the level of quality high in
respect to the pedigrees. Prospective customers
from more than 20 different countries were enticed
and came to the Niedersachsenhalle. In the
end 92 foals sold to 22 different countries which is
more than one-third of the entire foal collection.
Numerous private stallion owners gave moral support
to the exhibitors of Verden’s foal auction. The
State Stud Dillenburg also entered the list of buyers.
All the same the result at the end of the observations
was a rather sober one. Especially on Friday
the auction took an unsatisfactory course. The willingness
to bid just did not come up with the spectators
in the bleachers – one sensed an attitude of
wait-and-see. Too many foals did not find new owners.
An assessment we must soberly but also honestly
adhere! Only outstanding Dandolo set a
clearly positive accent! As the top-seller on Friday
as well as the entire auction this black colt by De
Niro/Florencio (breeder/exhibitor: Farm Kleemeyer,
Sudwehe) was radiant in every phase of his presentation.
Elasticity, a powerful back, much activity
out of the hindquarters combined with excellent
type and a secure damline distinguish this colt. The
hammer finaly fell at 48,000 Euros after a tough
bidding duel. A successful Hanoverian breeder
from the vicinity of Verden and who raises stallion
prospects was overjoyed about his acquisition and
rightfully so! Dandolo’s sire De Niro who was Hanoverian
Stallion Of The Year 2008 enriched the
auction collection with numerous foals of good
quality and proves that it might pay to count on
something proven during these difficult times.
Dandolo´s sale as the last foal on Friday appeared
to have had a psychological effect on the continuation
of the auction that started with some good
sales on Saturday. A Fidertanz son being the sixth
one out of Donna Doria by De Vito was the first
foal in the ring. Gerd Pigge from Lastrup exhibited

Figo IV. The privately owned sire Foundation is one
of his full-brothers. He sold for 30,000 Euros to
Sweden. Saturday’s top seller will not travel quite
as far north. A buyer from Denmark bought Fürst
Highness by Fürstenball/His Highness (breeder:
Helmut G. Heidmeyer, Rahden). He impressed with
his subtle and energetic movement and descends
from a secured damline.
Friendly auction course
On Saturday 23 foals sold for 8,000 Euros and/or
more; eleven of them for more then 15,000 Euros.
Celle’s state stud sire Don Index was represented
by some striking and noteworthy foals that sold
well here in Verden just as they ought to. The auction
took a much friendlier course on Saturday
which improved on Sunday. The overall price configuration
on Sunday was the best for the breeder
even though Sunday’s top selling foals were not as
high as Friday’s or Saturday’s. Towards the end a
kind of panic almost seemed to break out under
the spectators and the customers on the phone. It
would have been nice, if this feeling had appeared
a bit earlier in prospective buyers. Some started to
bid a bit late and might have missed good foals.
If you take a closer look at the foals sold for more
money you will notice parallels. Secured damlines,
riding horse movement of good quality with powerful
backs and proven or internationally renowned
pedigrees may very well positively influence
the market value of foals. If you are honest, you
must admit that buyers’ behavior cannot be interpreted
to the last detail. Sometimes the bids for
high-priced foals were hard to understand and
quality that the foals exhibited and that was secured
did not get the appropriate interest too often .
Tastes are different!
The group of selected broodmares included 17 mares
that obtained an average price of EUR
11,353.00. St. Pr. A. Rhianna by Romanov Blue
Hors/Rotspon (breeder/exhibitor: Heinrich Bohm,
Gilten-Norddrebber) was the top-selling mare. She
found a new home in Baden-Württemberg for
25,000 Euros. “Overall we would have loved to
see buyers honor the outstanding quality of the
mares even more - just as they did with the foals,”
breeding manager Dr. Werner Schade said.
The foal auction was certainly one of the most difficult
tasks the Hanoverian team has had to handle
this year. With all this knowledge attempts have
been made to optimize the presentations and the
advertisement. These efforts will accompany the
Hanoverian Association next year for the foal auction
2013, too. The history of Verden’s foal auctions
reflects that there will always be weaker phases
when some breeders just do not obtain the results
they had hoped for. It has been uphill for the past
almost thirty years. That is what we hope for. n
We are
a good Team!
The stable area of the training and sale centre is one
of the largest divisions in the Hanoverian
Association. 24 employees take care of the barn and
the horses – a task that is so different from an eighthour
office job. This is just one reason why team
spirit is written in capital letters here.
By Assi Blume
22 The Hanoverian 10|2012
If you have ever attended an auction in Verden,
you will have seen well turned-out horses presented
in a pleasing fashion. The terrain is always
well cared for and so are the stables and the indoor
arena. The stable team from the training and
sales centre (AAZ) under the direction of Hartmut
Kettelhodt is responsible for all of it.
The training of young horses
Most only know the employees of the AAZ as actors
in the extensive auction program. The main
field of responsibility of the AAZ is however the
training of young horses around the auction program.
The AAZ-team offers breeders the possibility
to start young horses under saddle and continue
with their training several times a year. This can be
done as a preparation for the mare performance
test or for an auction. The horses can also be presented
on horse shows during this training period.
It is planned to expand this service in the future.
The AAZ uses show participations as a stage for
representation in addition to familiarizing the
young horses with the horse show atmosphere.
The AAZ riders do a great job riding the young horses
in accordance with the horses’ abilities and
their tender ages. The goal of the entire training
program is to assist the breeders with the training
and the sale of their young horses. A commission
regularly evaluates the horses during this training
time. A horse will receive acceptance for participation
in the auction program, if it has the appropriate
quality. The Hanoverian Association wants to
support its breeders with these services especially
during the times when marketing is tough. The
breeders appear to greatly appreciate these services
and therefore more such training programs are
planned for the fall and winter and will include the
continuation of the training after the auctions.
On average there are about 100 horses in the AAZ.
They are stabled in the AAZ and in the former Riding
and Driving School. Today’s training centre
offers first-rate possibilities to train horses and to
organize different events at the same time. Space
no longer is a problem with six indoor arenas
available for training. The training of the horses
was not impaired even during the time of the International
Dressage and Jumper Festival when
portable stalls were set up in some arenas.
Free-jumping takes place once a week and jumping
under saddle twice a week under the direction
of Thomas Schönig; he is in charge of the jumper
training. The participation depends on the level
of training of each horse and is tailored to the
needs of each individual. Jumping under saddle
means either gymnastic jumping lanes, cavaletti
work or a stadium course. The horses do gymnastic
dressage exercises on the flat on the days without
jumping. Dressage training takes precedence for
dressage horses but they may be asked to freejump
as a gymnastic training tool. Relaxation training
follows a horse show weekend: The horses
can totally relax on a trailride through Verden’s forest.
The team
Hartmut Kettelhodt is the AAZ-team leader. Steffen
Beyer is in charge of the feeding program and is in
charge of maintaining the indoor arenas, the stab-

les and the entire outdoor terrain in cooperation
with Normen Eggeling. Rider and groom
teams are divided by discipline. We try to guarantee
the best-possible training for all horses
in both disciplines. Jörn Ahrens oversees
the dressage team consists of the following
riders: Wiebke Borchers, Anett Müller, Philip
Ruwe, Meike Vogel and Constanze Göbel;
and these grooms: Sabrina Schönfeld, Melanie
Wiechmann, Kristin Remmert, Dagmar
Emde, Giana Rohlfs, Manuela Baden, Conny
Arnemann and Ivonne Sommer. The following
students-in-training support them: Maja
Fasshauer and Dominik Brüggemann; and
these working students: Ebba Groenkvist and
Ariette Sausmikat. The jumping team includes
Heinrich Luttmann, Joachim Könneke and
Thomas Schönig who serves as the team leader.
Meike Vogel furthermore handles the
barn books and manages the account statements.
She is the connection between the
stable and the office just like Hartmut Kettelhodt.
Especially Hartmut Kettelholdt works
very hard to guarantee smooth communication
between the AAZ-team and the auction
team in the office. It is the only way to guarantee
proper organization and smooth sale
events. Every Monday morning auction manager
Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener calls a meeting
to plan the upcoming week. Harmut Kettelhodt
and Meike Vogel attend the meeting as
well as both (dressage and jumping) leaders,
Joern Ahres and Thomas Schönig. It is discussed
what auction pre-selections, mare
tests or other special events are to take place
and what the schedule will be.
Always a helping hand
Even though the main responsibilities for riders
and grooms lie in the care and training
of the horses they all help with all association
events, too. Employees from the AAZ become
whip-handlers and runners during a freejumping
competition or an licensing for instance.
For example during the World Championships
for Young Dressage Horses for
example you could see a rider offering a helping
hand where needed only to see him present
a horse in the competition a little later. It
did not take very long after his ride and he
was back helping out. If you listen within the
team, you will find friendly and motivated
people who enjoy what they do. The riders
positively commented on the co-operation
within the team and the joint training of the
horses. You find out how important teamwork
is when you take a closer look at the
daily routine.
The workday starts at 7 AM with stable duties
for everybody. Everybody helps! Work
starts after a joint breakfast. Riding auction
horses is the area where working for the association
differs from working a regular training
or grooming job. This point makes the
work very desirable and interesting. Wiebke
Borchers says that it is intriguing to always
get used to new horses as every horse is ridden
differently. It is a challenge I enjoy. Anett
Mueller adds that it is interesting to follow
the career path of a former auction horse
knowing that you had a share in it. n
This is Assi Blume
I was born in Achim in 1992, was raised in Völkersen and
completed an apprenticeship to become a banker at the
Kreissparkasse Verden after the successful completion of the
‘Abitur’ (German high school diploma). I started riding ponies
when I was nine years old but quickly changed over to
regular-sized horses. My heart has always been with dressage.
I have been in the fortunate position to ride a Weltmeyer
descendant that is trained up to the S-level for three years
now. In addition to riding I have been active with the Young
Breeders since 2006. I made it into the Perspective Cadre of
the Hanoverian Association in 2009; it was my third try. I was accepted into the
cadre in 2010 and still belong to it today. I participated in three German
Championships and one World Championship. My biggest success was at my
first participation in the German Championships when we became Team
Champions and I became Individual Reserve Champion, too.
