The Sun Protection Factor indicates the level of protection expected from the sun cream.
When we apply it, we are increasing by 15 times the amount of time in which our skin will burn. However, this concept varies according to
phototype, location and times of exposure.

There are several types of complexion, known as phototypes. The phototype system enables us to class
individuals according to their skin’s reaction to the sun.
If the skin is very pale and contains little melanin, the skin's natural protective
pigment, it will be naturally more sensitive and less able to defend itself against
UV rays.
The lighter the skin and the higher the level of sunshine > the higher sun protection

Apply your Thalgo sun protection generously to the face and body, before each exposure and in sufficient quantity.
By reducing the quantity, you significantly reduce the level of protection. Reapply frequently every 2 hours to maintain protection, especially
after swimming, sweating or drying yourself. Sun products do not however offer 100% protection.
Choose a protection factor suited to your phototype and the sun conditions:
Ask your Thalgo beautician for advice on the most suitable suncare products. If you cannot decide between two factors, choose the highest

Time your sunbathing carefully
Avoid exposure to the sun during peak sunshine hours (between 11am and 3pm) or stay in the shade! The sun’s rays are vertical during
these hours and will burn the skin. Over-exposure is dangerous for health, particularly for children.
Wear suitable clothing:
Hat/scarf, T-shirts and sunglasses to protect sensitive areas from the sun.
Protecting young children from the sun:
Do not expose babies or children under 3 years of age to direct sunlight.
Dry well after swimming
Drops of water drying on the skin in the sun are dangerous for sunburn (magnifying effect of water in the sun), but also cause skin
dehydration as they evaporate. If you have been in the sea, only the salt will stay on the skin, which can be very aggressive. As far as
possible, shower well after swimming in the sea.

THE TANNING MECHANISM
The skin has two mechanisms for protecting itself against the sun:
1. Thickening of the epidermis: Under the action of the UV rays, the cells in the surface
layer of the skin, known as the epidermis, multiply and cause the epidermic layer to
thicken. This thicker layer is more resistant to UV rays, and so can filter more UV.
2. Tanning: The UV rays activate the synthesis of melanin using Tyrosine in the
melanocytes. A natural pigmentary molecule in the skin, it absorbs 90% of the sun’s
harmful UVB rays, acting as a chemical solar filter. These UV rays are therefore not
transmitted to the cells, and are no longer harmful.

2. Mineral filters:
Sun filters are the active molecules in sun creams. Through their action, the skin is protected
from the UV rays emitted by the sun.
There are two types of filters:
1. Chemical filters:
SUN FILTERS
Chemical filters absorb the UV rays emitted by the sun and re-emit a vibration or radiation that is less
harmful to the skin.
Chemical filters have the same action as melanin, the skin’s natural protector!
Mineral filters, known as “sun screens” react like a protective barrier or film on the
skin. They reflect the UV emitted by the sun, thus protecting the skin. Mineral filters are nanoparticles of talc,
zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, which are better tolerated by sensitive, more fragile skin types.

-: very penetrative, they damage the elastic fibres of the skin and are responsible for photo-induced ageing, i.e. the premature
ageing of the skin. They also have a role in the genesis of some skin cancers.
UVB
+: stimulate melanin, causing a tan to appear in 48 hours. Trigger the synthesis of Vitamin D from circulating cholesterol; these are
the “anti-rickets” rays.
-: responsible in the short-term for “sunburn” and in the long-term for premature skin ageing and the genesis of some skin cancers.
Reduce the immune defence system, causing outbreaks of herpes.
The skin, a well guarded barrier
The skin has its own identity and also acts as a barrier, place of transition and communication.
The surface layer of the epidermis contains keratinocytes. When in contact with the sun's rays, these multiply and thicken the epidermis, which increases its
solidity in the light. At the bottom of the epidermis, the melanocytes, pigmentary cells, multiply under the effect of the sun, accelerating the production of a
pigment called melanin, which absorbs the rays and creates a protective screen, plus a brown or golden colour. The abundance and distribution of melanin
determines the colour of the skin and its reaction to the sun. Therefore, people with black skin (which contains more melanin) are better protected against the
sun’s harmful effects.
Tanning, a natural defensive reaction
Under the influence of UVA and UVB, the melanocytes synthesise melanin in greater quantities.
This cellular mechanism happens gradually; the tan only appears a few days after exposure to the sun.
The tan achieved this way creates a protection capable of absorbing up to 90% of UVB, but this is still not sufficient protection to
guard against the harmful effects of the sun.
Tanning does not stop UVA. These are as dangerous as UVB; both are responsible in the long-term for skin cancer.

How long does a tan last?
The coloured cells are located in the epidermis, so the tan disappears gradually as the epidermis renews itself.
In around 25 days, it has completely disappeared.
Can everyone get a tan?
No! Dark skin, which is rich in melanin, is better protected than fair complexions. There are 6 skin phototypes: from 0 (albinos, who cannot tan at all) to 6
(black skin). But even with a high phototype, the protection is only partial. Although melanin filters 60% of UVB, it lets UVA pass through. In addition, from the
age of 30, the number of melanocytes decreases by 8-20% every 10 years, which makes it more difficult to tan.
What is the difference between UVA and UVB?
UVB and UVA are different in intensity and wavelength in the solar spectrum. UVB, which represent barely 2% of UV rays, are however mainly responsible for
tanning: they are 1,000 times more powerful than UVA. However, UVA penetrate deeper into the skin and are therefore just as harmful. In addition, they
damage the elasticity of the skin, causing wrinkles in the long-term.
How do sun creams work?
The protective filters in these products are molecules which absorb certain rays. A filter effective for the whole spectrum of rays does not exist. This is why
several filters are usually combined, without exceeding 6-8% of the product composition. There are 2 types of filters in sun creams. Organic filters are
molecules produced by chemical reaction, generally derived from oil. Mineral filters are the powder of opaque minerals (titanium dioxide, talc, mica, iron oxide,
kaolin etc.), very finely ground, which reflect some of the sun’s rays. They are less allergy-forming than organic filters, but require more careful, more regular
application. Read the ingredients well to find out what type of filter your cream contains.
What do the protection factors mean?
The SPF is the ratio between the dose of radiation necessary to cause sunburn on unprotected skin, and the dose necessary to cause the same sunburn on
skin protected by the sun product. For example, with an SPF of 15, you are increasing by 15 times the amount of time in which your skin will burn. But be
careful: the quantity of sun rays varies considerably according to the time of day, or the place where you are...
What are the long-term effects of tanning?
As the skin is exposed to the sun, it becomes less elastic, the cells do not renew themselves as often, the coloured pigments cluster together and form Vshapes,
which cause cell damage and can lead to skin cancer.
Are self-tanning supplements effective?
Food such as carrots, spinach, apricots and tomatoes etc. contain beta-carotene or provitamin A. This activates the production of melanin and prepares the
skin for tanning. A very high consumption of these foods or dietary supplements can even colour the skin orange. But be careful: you still need to be protected
against UV rays.
