Dear Friends: 

Over the past year, much attention has been given to the merger of University Medical Center (UMC) and University 

Physicians Healthcare (UPH) into a new entity now titled THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA HEALTH NETWORK. 

UMC is now THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA MEDICAL CENTER. Driving this merger has been a uniform desire 

to improve the already-high level of patient care established by UMC and UPH; to enhance education, research, 

and community outreach; and to elevate the University of Arizona College of Medicine to the uppermost tier of 

American medical colleges, where it deserves to be. 

As has taken place with departments and divisions throughout the new organization, the UMC Foundation 

has merged with the UPH Foundation, retaining the UMC Foundation name. However, our MISSION remains 

unchanged: to encourage philanthropic support of our parent organization, in all respects, to the best of our 

abilities. 

As the contents of this Annual Report indicate, the previous year was another vigorous and successful one for the 

UMC Foundation. Thanks to the indispensable help of friends such as you, this organization EASILY SET NEW 

RECORDS FOR THE NUMbER OF DONORS WHO DONATED AND THE NUMbER OF gIFTS WE RECEIVED, 

and our impact upon the extended enterprise was greater than ever before. 

Private philanthropy has enabled us to greatly enhance our support of crucially-important patient-care areas such as 

Pediatrics, Emergency & Trauma Services, Cancer Care, and Transplantation. It has enabled us to help save lives and 

to keep families together. 

I stated above that our overall mission is unchanged. It is, however, substantially EXPANDED, and we’ve already 

begun planning additional initiatives in Behavioral Health and Geriatrics—which means that charitable support 

from all of our previous benefactors, grateful former patients, and other interested parties is more crucial than at 

any point in the past. I hope that, as you examine this report, you will keep that important fact in mind and keep 

The University of Arizona Medical Center and the UMC Foundation uppermost in your philanthropic plans.

HUdSon foUndation HelpS fUnd Vital pieCeS of teCHnoloGY 

In 2010-2011, Tucson’s HUDSON FOUNDATION added 

to its lengthy and much-appreciated record of support 

of The University of Arizona Medical Center with gifts 

approximating $60,000, which made possible the purchases of 

three important pieces of technological advancement, two for 

the Emergency Department (ED)/Trauma Center and one for 

Radiation Oncology. 

The first item benefiting Emergency/Trauma 

is an “EnFlow” Intravenous Fluid/Blood 

Warming System, a crucial lifesaving device 

that heats fluids or blood being administered 

to a trauma patient to 40 degrees Celsius in as 

little as four (4) seconds. 

Patients arriving at the ED or Trauma Center may have various 

types of bleeding. If a patient has a low temperature or is 

hypothermic due to shock or exposure, his blood does not 

clot correctly, which contributes to increased bleeding and 

raises the patient’s risk of bleeding to death. Blood stored in 

the Blood Bank is necessarily kept cold, but, if administered 

to a bleeding patient while still cold, that new blood only adds 

to the bleeding problem. The Fluid/Blood Warming System 

made possible by the Hudson Foundation heats the new blood 

quickly and optimally before its administration, which both 

warms the patient and helps the blood clot in a normal fashion.

Also benefiting Emergency/Trauma is funding for the purchase 

of intubating “blades” for a Verathon Medical Glidescope, a 

device that, using a tiny camera that sends pictures back to a 

computer screen, enables Emergency/Trauma staff to intubate 

a patient quickly and safely, avoiding potential damage to 

larynx and lungs. 

A welcome addition to Radiation Oncology made possible by 

the Hudson Foundation is a Varian Medical Systems Eclipse 

IKOE System, which provides a large repertoire of diverse 

anatomical images that in turn enables the radiation oncologist 

to create an individualized radiation plan for a patient. The 

“contouring” of a patient—outlining all of the pertinent 

structures, both tumors and risk areas—used to require four 

to five hours of physicians’ time; the IKOE System reduces that 

time to a matter of minutes. 

The Hudson Foundation, its Board of Directors comprised 

of CLIFF bLOOM and daughters MARY and CATHERINE 

bLOOM, has given these generous gifts in memory of late 

family friend Lawrence L. Johnson. 

“The generous people at the Hudson Foundation have proven 

and re-proven themselves to be among the best friends that our 

Emergency Department and Trauma Center have,” said KENT 

ROLLINS, UMC Foundation President, “and now they’ve 

added Radiation Oncology to their list. Without question, their 

generosity has helped save many lives.”

CanCer Center—faSSeaS CliniC 

When the Peter & Paula Fasseas Cancer Clinic 

opened in January of 2007 as the new clinical 

home of the renowned University of Arizona 

Cancer Center, it appeared to the uninitiated to be finished 

and complete. However, two separate, expansive spaces on 

the second floor discretely remained empty “shell space” to 

accommodate future expansion. That expansion is about to 

happen, with the addition of two new, much-needed clinical 

programs scheduled to open by January 1, 2012: 

n A MOHS MICROgRAPHIC SKIN-CANCER SURgERY 

CLINIC: This clinic will provide, on an out-patient basis, 

the latest, most effective surgical treatment available for 

skin cancers today. The Mohs procedure, named after Dr. 

Frederic E. Mohs, the physician who first devised it, involves 

surgically removing skin cancer by layer and examining the 

tissue—immediately, in a special pathology laboratory in the 

clinic—until healthy, cancer-free tissue (“clear margins”) is 

reached. Mohs surgery offers the highest potential for cure 

(up to 99%), and, by removing the least amount of skin, it 

offers superior cosmetic results as well. 

The addition of this new Mohs clinic is the latest, major step 

forward for the Arizona Cancer Center’s SKIN CANCER 

INSTITUTE (SCI). Founded in 2005 with a mission of 

preventing and curing skin cancer, the SCI is now an 

international model of comprehensive research, outreach, 

education, and clinical care. It embraces four dermatologists, 

a Mohs surgeon, a surgical oncologist specializing in 

melanoma, three medical oncologists treating melanoma, and 

epidemiologists and behavioral scientists focused on skincancer 

research

new Mohs Skin-Cancer Surgery Clinic. 

Board certified in Dermatology and 

a Fellow of the American College of 

Mohs Surgery, Dr. Pitts attended the University of Kansas 

School of Medicine in Kansas City and studied at Oxford 

University as a Rhodes Scholar. After completing her residency 

in Dermatology at Atlanta’s Emory School of Medicine, she 

completed a fellowship in Mohs Surgery at the Penn State 

University School of Medicine. In addition to Mohs surgery, 

Dr. Pitts’ other fields of interest include cutaneous oncology 

and reconstructive surgery. 

n AN ADULT OUTPATIENT gENITOURINARY 

ONCOLOgY & PELVIC-FLOOR DISORDERS CLINIC: 

a new, larger home for one of the busiest out-patient clinical 

services in the entire University of Arizona Medical Center, 

this clinic will allow for increased numbers of patient 

visits and decreased waiting times, and will centralize and 

consolidate two multi-disciplinary clinics: Genitourinary 

Oncology (prostate, bladder, kidney, testis, adrenal, 

and penile cancers), and Pelvic Floor Disorders and 

Reconstructive Urology. A complex subspecialty requiring 

multidisciplinary care, “Pelvic Floor Medicine” includes all 

facets of urinary dysfunction in men and women.

and a member of the UA Arizona 

Cancer Center, will direct the new Adult 

Outpatient Genitourinary Oncology

Dr. Sokoloff completed his residency 

in Urology at UCLA and a Urology 

fellowship at the University of Virginia 

Hospitals. He is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified urologic 

oncologist who is internationally known for his contributions 

to the surgical treatment of prostate, kidney, and testis cancers, 

and to the management of high-risk, locally-advanced, and 

recurrent forms of those cancers. He is also an accomplished 

translational physician-scientist involved in clinical research.

neW BeHaVioral HealtH paVilion openS at SoUtH CaMpUS 

This fall, at The University of Arizona Medical Center— 

South Campus (formerly known as UPH Hospital), a 

new facility has opened to offer an integrated approach 

and a continuum of care to one of Pima County’s most 

vulnerable populations: the mentally ill. 

Designated the bEHAVIORAL HEALTH PAVILION, this 

stunning new three-story complex is the result of a unique, 

public-private partnership involving Pima County, The 

University of Arizona Medical Center, the Community 

Partnership of Arizona, and The University of Arizona College 

of Medicine. The Pavilion will feature: 

• An Emergency Department, including 33 treatment rooms 

and six (6) trauma rooms; 

• Private inpatient beds; 

• Outpatient services; 

• Classrooms and teaching facilities; 

• A courtroom for patients admitted through the legal system. 

The vision for this unique complex evolved from the 

burgeoning strain being put upon Tucson’s health-care system 

by steadily-increasing numbers of individuals with mentalhealth 

and substance-abuse disorders (a 20% increase during 

2010). In the past, such individuals were routinely brought to 

local hospital emergency rooms; unfortunately, such mixing 

of behavioral-health patients and patients with immediate 

medical problems often disrupted care for both groups and 

further taxed the overloaded emergency health-care system. 

Operating in conjunction with the Pavilion is the new CRISIS 

RESPONSE CENTER (CRC), which will provide assessment, 

stabilization, and treatment to individuals in crisis who do not 

require emergency medical or acute psychiatric care.

PATRICIA HARRISON-MONROE, PhD, 

Clinical Assistant Professor in the UA 

Department of Psychiatry, oversees these 

welcome new facilities. “This is an exciting 

time for those of us here at the Pavilion and 

the COC,” said Dr. Harrison. “The services being provided here 

are absolutely crucial, and we’re confident that this campus 

will prove to be an enormous resource to the mental-health 

community throughout the area. Our overall objective is to 

move the campus toward becoming a Center of Excellence for 

behavioral health.”

In the construction budget for the Behavioral Health Pavilion, 

there was little left over for interior decoration. Fortunately, 

thoughtful Tucsonan PAM gEOgA came forward with timely 

and attractive silk floral enhancements for the Pavilion’s lobby. 

Now, a tasteful 38” arrangement of silk flowers sits atop a 

stylish, distressed-wood table 36” tall. Elsewhere, the lobby is 

graced by a pair of tall (53”) silk euphorbia cacti, contained in 

28”, custom-made pots. 

Each of the two pots bears a small brass plaque. One plaque 

is inscribed, “In loving memory of Charles Andrew Turkstra, 

March 6, 1999—March 29, 1999.” Ms. Geoga’s grandson, 

Charles was born prematurely, at 26 weeks, and passed 

away soon afterward. The other plaque is inscribed, “In 

loving memory of Kelly Michelle Linderman.” Ms. Geoga’s 

stepdaughter, Kelly passed away at age 36, after having battled 

Hodgkin’s lymphoma for nine years. 

In response to these gifts, Dr. Patricia Harrison-Monroe said, 

“These beautiful items fit in our lobby perfectly, and the fact 

that they have personal connections to the donor makes them 

all the more meaningful. We’re very grateful to Ms. Geoga.”

UnitY for life fUnd aSSiStS tranSplant reCipientS & faMilieS 

The UNITY FOR LIFE FUND was established in 2009 

by a community of UMC cardio-thoracic transplant 

recipients and their families, who continue to support 

it on an ongoing basis through revenue-creating events and 

fundraising activities. The fund was created to assist heart 

and lung transplant patients and their caregivers by providing 

temporary assistance to alleviate the unexpected, frequently 

devastating financial hardships created by the transplantation 

process. Consider the following, true personal account: 

“MY NAME IS DEbbIE, AND I AM A DOUbLE-LUNg- 

TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT. I was diagnosed with COPD 

(chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) in 2000 and put on 

the UMC transplant waiting list in 2006. I gratefully received 

my new lungs in 2008. “My husband and I had worked all of 

our lives. We had health insurance, a savings program, a 401-K 

plan, and Social Security. We thought we were prepared—and 

protected. But, as we ruefully learned, no one can truly prepare 

for a catastrophic illness. 

WHAT THOSE TRANSPLANT MEDICATIONS COST….. 

A patient who receives a double-lung transplant immediately 

faces a post-transplant regimen of twelve (12) medications 

that must be taken daily, two powerful immunosuppressants 

and ten (10) other necessary drugs. The total cost of those 

medications is approximately $2,500—PER MONTH 

“For years, we had commuted from Sedona to Tucson for my 

treatment at UMC. As my condition worsened, though, we 

had to relocate close to UMC, which meant that, on top of 

our existing mortgage, we also had to incur housing costs in 

Tucson. Then came the surgery and subsequent anti-rejection 

drugs, and suddenly we found ourselves having to choose: pay 

the mortgage, or pay for the medications. Unable to sell our 

Sedona home, we surrendered it to foreclosure. As we did so, 

we temporarily surrendered some of our dignity, too. 

“Today, blessed with new lungs and a full life, I don’t look 

backward. Instead, I’m looking forward, toward helping other 

transplant-recipients deal with the staggering expenses that 

accompany transplantation. I’m looking forward to helping the 

UNITY FOR LIFE FUND become even more successful.” 

Because The University of Arizona Medical Center is a 

REGIONAL TRANSPLANT CENTER, 75 percent of its cardiothoracic 

transplant patients come from outside of Tucson.

CHURCH, have been involved for several years 

in supporting the pediatric patients of Diamond Children’s 

Medical Center. This past year, Jack decided that something 

should be done to help ease the often-heavy emotional burdens 

of families whose children are long-term patients at Diamond 

Children’s. That something became an idea whose time had 

clearly come: the “Lunch Break” 

program. 

Here’s how the program works. Each month, a different family 

is selected by the Child Life Specialists at Diamond Children’s 

to have a “Lunch Break.” On a prearranged date, that family is 

transported by limousine—paid for by HUgHES FEDERAL 

CREDIT UNION—to the ARIZONA INN, only a short 

distance down Elm Street from Diamond Children’s. At “The 

Inn” the family is treated to a nice, relaxing lunch underwritten 

by Hughes Federal Credit Union and the Arizona Inn itself. 

After lunch, the limousine returns the family to its destination. 

“Some of these families spend enormous amounts of time at 

the hospital with their kids,” said Mr. Foote. “Sometimes just a 

small break in that routine can make a big difference in their 

outlooks.” Hughes Federal Credit Union’s KELLY TERHUNE 

NEELY observed, “It’s obvious that one of these lunch breaks 

can mean a great deal to the family of a long-term Diamond 

Children’s patient. They just light up. We’re delighted to help.”

In its 4th year of recognizing law enforcement officers, firefighters, 

paramedics, Border Patrol agents, and other first responders, a 

several-day CELEBRATION OF HEROES began on Thursday, 

September 8 and ended on Sunday, September 11—the 10th 

anniversary of the now-infamous terrorism attacks on the World 

Trade Center and the Pentagon. 

In partnership with the UMC FOUNDATION, Tucson’s JACK 

FURRIER TIRE & AUTO CARE was the corporate sponsor of 

the celebration, which raised contributions and awareness for 

the LEVEL I TRAUMA CENTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF 

ARIZONA MEDICAL CENTER—UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, the 

only “Level I” trauma center in Southern Arizona.

On the morning of September 8th, popular 

on-air personality bObbY RICH, Host of 94.9 

MIXfm’S THE bObbY RICH MORNINg 

MIX, kicked off Heroes Day from “bObbY’S TREE HOUSE” at La 

Encantada shopping center (North Campbell Rd. & Skyline Dr.), 

from which he would broadcast live until the afternoon of Sunday 

the 11th. Rich, also the station’s Program Director and Director of 

Community Partnerships for Journal Broadcasting Group–Tucson, 

began by emceeing the Celebration of Heroes press conference, 

which introduced this year’s three honorees: 

• NICOLE CRAWSON—Pima County Sherriff ’s 

Department. On April 1, 2011, Deputy Crawson 

rescued a family from a car after it was struck by the 

vehicle of a fleeing robbery suspect. 

• DAN gUTIERREZ—Arizona Department of Public 

Safety. On October 13, 2010, Detective Gutierrez 

rescued an abducted infant from an armed and 

dangerous offender. 

• TYLER MENKE—Tucson Fire Department. On July 

28, 2010, Firefighter Menke pulled a trapped victim 

from a crashed and burning helicopter. Although the 

victim later died in the hospital, Menke’s heroic actions 

enabled the victim’s family to say goodbye to him. 

Speakers at the press conference included DR. PETER RHEE, 

Medical Director of the Level I Trauma Center, DR. RICHARD 

CARMONA, 17th U.S. Surgeon General, RON bARbER, a staff 

member for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and one of 

the victims of the January 8th shooting tragedy in Tucson, and 

JACK FURRIER 

From 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM that day, free breakfast and lunch 

were available to all area first responders at any of THE FIVE 

PARTICIPATINg LOCATIONS OF JACK 

FURRIER TIRE & AUTO CARE. 

Also part of the Celebration of Heroes was a photography 

exhibit titled “STRONgER THAN STEEL,” 

which was on display from September 

8-11 at La La Encantada, in the former 

location of Bluepoint Kitchen & Bar. The 

exhibit featured photos taken by Tucson 

photographer RONI ZIEMbA during her 

“ride-alongs” with various first-responding 

entities around Tucson. 

After descending from his elevated outpost on the 11th, Bobby 

Rich observed, “It’s been a thrill to use 94.9 MIXfm’s broad 

reach and huge following to salute our First Responders and to 

raise awareness and funds for the Level I Trauma Center. Many 

of my listeners stopped by to thank me for letting them know 

what a terrific asset the Trauma Center is to the entire region.” 

Following the Celebration of Heroes, 94.9 MIXfm conducted 

an on-line auction of Bobby’s Tree House, which had been 

constructed entirely with donated materials. The proceeds 

from the auction also benefited the Trauma Center.

Thanks to $3 million of funding provided by many 

generous donors like you, in mid-2011 a newlyconstructed 

RADIATION ONCOLOgY CLINIC 

opened its doors at The University of Arizona Medical Center 

Orange Grove Clinic, 1891 W. Orange Grove Rd., east of North 

La Cholla Boulevard. 

The new clinic treated its first patient on June 13, 2011, using 

the newest technology: a Varian Trilogy Linear Accelerator, 

which makes possible shorter treatment times and permits 

the clinic’s physicians to spare healthy tissue to an extent 

unimaginable only a few years ago. The clinic also offers a GE 

PET/CT Scanner for specific radiation therapy and diagnostic 

imaging.

treatment.” The same physicians providing 

expert consultations and radiation therapy 

services at The University of Arizona Medical 

Center—University Campus are staffing the 

new Orange Grove Clinic. 

This new Radiation Oncology Clinic is adjacent to and 

complements the existing outpatient oncology clinic, which, 

like the University of Arizona Cancer Center—North Campus 

on North Campbell Avenue, offers physicians and nurses who 

specialize in medical and surgical oncology. At this campus, 

patients receive treatment in open-light-filled spaces where 

they can visit with other patients, family, and friends, or watch 

TV. There is also a private courtyard. The nurse-to-patient ratio 

never exceeds 1-to-4, and the complex also provides an on-site 

laboratory and pharmacy services.

Vascular Surgeon Dr. Kay Goshima 

On July 30 of this year, 86-year-old Green Valley 

resident LEROY LUETSCHER found himself at the 

hospital, covered in blood and with excruciating pain 

in his head: as a result of a freak accident, one of the handles of 

some pruning shears had been plunged through his right eye 

socket, 6 inches into his skull—and resting against the carotoid 

artery in his neck. It was feared that he would lose the sight in 

the eye, if not the entire eye itself—or suffer an even worse fate. 

Fortunately for him, Mr. Luetscher was in exactly the right 

place: the acclaimed LEVEL I TRAUMA CENTER at THE 

UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA MEDICAL CENTER. After 

stabilization of their patient and diagnostic imaging of his 

head, the trauma team set about removing the shears handle, 

which was wedged in so tightly that it couldn’t be moved. 

Oculoplastic surgeon DR. LYNN POLONSKI, one of the 

surgeons who had helped save the life of U.S. Representative 

gAbRIELLE gIFFORDS last January, and vascular surgeon 

DR. KAY gOSHIMA made incisions underneath Mr. 

Luetscher’s right upper lip and sinus wall, which enabled them 

to loosen the shears handle with their fingers and remove it. 

They then excised bone fragments and rebuilt his orbital floor 

with titanium.

Oculoplastic Surgeon Dr. Lynn Polonski 

After a three-week regimen of antibiotics to prevent lifethreatening 

infections, Mr. Luetscher emerged from his ordeal 

in astonishingly good shape, with only slight swelling in his 

eyelids and minor double vision remaining. He is a lucky man: 

the shears handle could have ruptured his eyeball, entered his 

brain, or severed his carotid artery. As Dr. Polonski stated, “If 

(the shears handle) had gone a little bit in a different direction, 

he could have had a stroke, or it could have killed him.” Mr. 

Luetscher appreciates his good fortune. “Thank goodness I was 

where I was,” he said, “within reach of this great place.” 

With the grim events of last January 8th still firmly in mind, 

UMC Foundation Sr. Development Officer Tom Sanders 

observed, “This event, with its happy outcome, proves yet again 

that our Level I Trauma Center is an invaluable, indispensable 

asset to the entire region—and that it richly deserves the 

philanthropic support of those whom it serves.’

Arizona individuals under 40 years of age who 

demonstrated significant professional accomplishments 

and leadership qualities, and whose work had 

appreciable impact upon the community. 

Dr. Laukatis received her MD and PhD in 2003 from the 

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, completed her 

Residency in Internal Medicine at St. Vincent Hospital & 

President KENT ROLLINS, and (2nd from R.) DR. ANDY 

THEODOROU, Chief Medical Officer and Director of the 

Center for Quality & Safety. 

Dr. Bedrick, a member of a fraternity during his undergraduate

Christmas in July program since its inception. 

To a patient undergoing challenging, debilitating 

treatment in the Hematology-Oncology/BMT Clinic 

of Diamond Children’s Medical Center, a small thing 

such as a new, free toy can provide a welcome distraction and 

lift his or her spirits. For that reason, the clinic’s medical staff 

and Child Life Specialists are always encouraging donations of 

toys. Predictably, though, in the middle of every summer, toy 

supplies begin to run short. 

In order to combat that problem, four years ago the clinical 

staff began the CHRISTMAS IN JULY program. Conducted 

in concert with the TUCSON POLICE DEPARTMENT 

(TPD) and various local merchants, Christmas in July is a 

concentrated effort to collect as many new toys as possible in a 

relatively short period of time and deliver them to the clinic for 

distribution to the young, courageous patients there. 

What was the first sign of Christmas in July? Christmas in July came to Stella Marie Murphy- 

Thorn and her mom Laurel.

BooSt natiVe aMeriCan CardioloGY proGraM 

Residents to the Navajo Nation’s cardiology clinics in Northern 

Arizona. During its visits over a week’s time to Kayenta, 

Chinle, and Fort Defiance, the team saw 75 patients. Indian 

Health Service staff also participated. 

In addition to providing much-needed care to Native 

Americans suffering from coronary disease, this trip served as 

part of NACP’s Cultural Competency Curriculum for residents 

and clinical fellows who are interested in providing cardiology 

care for Native American patients. 

“The Residents and Fellows had a terrific experience, both 

culturally and from a cardiology training perspective,” recounted 

Dr. Brody. “The amazing breadth of disease we see at those 

clinics is unlike anything they are accustomed to in their routine 

clinics here in Tucson. Without the support of the Ottens 

Foundation and the Picker Institute, we’d have great difficulty 

delivering this essential care to Arizona’s Native Americans.”

GoUldS CoMplete fUndinG for diaMond CHildren’S dialYSiS Unit 

Thanks to a timely, substantial six-figure gift from Tucsonans ARTHUR and 

MATILDA “TERRY” gOULD, Diamond Children’s Medical Center will 

soon provide to its young patients an out-patient pediatric dialysis unit in a 

child- and family-focused setting on the 6th floor. The Goulds have an ongoing desire 

to improve the lives of children and their families in the Tucson community, a desire 

that has manifested itself in the forms of several major gifts to Diamond Children’s, of 

which this gift is the largest. Mr. Gould has asked that this latest gift be considered a 

dedication to his wife. The Goulds have been married for 64 years. 

“Our inability to provide dialysis care on site to our smallest outpatients 

was a gap in our pediatric service,” said LORI THRONE, (L) 

Director of Women’s & Children’s Services. “We wanted our pediatric 

nephrologists to be able to oversee the care of those patients directly and 

respond to their needs. As they have done so many times in the past, the 

Goulds made our dreams come true by offering their generous support. Their genuine, 

selfless desire to help us provide comprehensive care to our children is truly amazing.” 

tUCSon’S pilot ClUB BenefitS Colton’S friendS fUnd 

The COLTON’S FRIENDS FUND was 

established in 2005 by Elgin, AZ, rancher 

CHRIS RUTTER in honor and memory of 

his son COLTON RUTTER. When less than a year 

old, Colton suffered a severe traumatic brain injury 

(TBI) in an automobile accident that also seriously 

injured his father, Chris. Despite heroic efforts by 

the UMC Trauma Center and, subsequently, by 

Chris Rutter with his 

son Colton 

the UMC Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Colton eventually 

succumbed to his injuries several months later. Chris Rutter created 

Colton’s Friends to provide financial assistance to families with 

children who have incurred TBIs. 

In March of 2011, the UMC Foundation was visited by two 

representatives of the Tucson chapter of the PILOT CLUb, an 

international service organization consisting of 25,000 adult and 

youth volunteers from the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Bermuda, Canada, 

Japan, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States. One of 

the purposes of Pilot Club International is “to achieve universal 

awareness and prevention of brain-related disorders and disabilities.”

During their visit, Tucson Pilot Club President DIANE 

PAVLOVICH and member SANDY LAUVER presented a 

check for $3,000, designated for the Colton’s Friends Fund.

Children’s Social Worker Claire Bianchi. “This generous 

gift from the Pilot Club of Tucson will be put to good use 

immediately. We’re most appreciative.”

The unanimous view of last year’s first-ever Diamond 

Children’s Medical Center Gala Celebration was that it 

was a spectacular event. Now, there’s unanimity in the 

opinion that the 2011 Gala—which benefited bOTH Diamond 

Children’s and the Steele Children’s Research Center—was even 

better. Although the numbers were still being crunched when 

this article went to print, early projections indicated that the 

event’s NET proceeds would approximate $280,000. 

Held in the grand ballroom of the Westin La Paloma Resort 

on September 24th, and Emceed by KOLD-TV News 13 

anchors HEATHER ROWE and SCOTT KILbURY, this year’s 

Gala attracted 44 sponsors and 600 guests, who enjoyed the 

following: 

•With background music by the JAZZATEERS trio, an 

unsurpassed silent auction that raised nearly $60,000. 

•A spirited dance performance by 50 young members of 

DANCE FORCE I. 

•“A DAY IN THE LIFE OF…..” a compelling video 

presentation produced by LITTEER FILMS featuring 

testimonials by three past and current Diamond Children’s 

patients, which was followed by in-person comments by one of 

those patients, MICHELLE gRENIER–who is now a nurse at 

Diamond Children’s, practicing alongside the same physicians 

and nurses who had treated her!

gRANDINETTI of Los Angeles. 

•Following a most enjoyable dinner, dancing to the music of 

THE WALKENS, one of the most talented and popular bands 

in Phoenix.

complete with props, where guests could reveal their hidden
