Dear Friends of Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation:
As we consider 2008, we reflect on a year that has been exceptionally challenging and rewarding
for Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation. The deep commitment and generosity of friends
like you resulted in much-needed continued support.
Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation is about investing in the health of our community. The crisis
is mounting among our neighbors who don’t have regular access to health care. Through the work of
the Foundation, Broadlawns Medical Center is able to improve the lives of people in our community by
providing quality health care when the need exceeds the ability to pay.
The Foundation is also about you – our partners, neighbors and friends, who generously give your
support through your gifts of money and time. This report recognizes hundreds of people, among many
others, who are the forces that carry our Foundation through the seasons of the year. We hope this
report will help you take time during the upcoming year for regular glimpses into how the Foundation
contributes to our community’s wellbeing.
Can we do more? We think so. Of the 65,000 uninsured residents of Polk County, we saw just over half
of them last year. Every patient who seeks medical treatment at Broadlawns receives care, regardless of
their ability to pay. Broadlawns Medical Center is critical to the welfare of a large number of the most
vulnerable in our society.
We appreciate your confidence in our work, and we hope we can count on your continued support
throughout the coming year. With your help, we will continue to provide high-quality health care in our

blessed with generous community
leaders and special friends
commited to our success. This year our volunteers and
board members have had opportunities to assist with the
Variety Telethon, visit with friends and neighbors at the
Downtown Des Moines Farmer’s Market and celebrate at
our 2008 Fall Gala. I have had the pleasure of making my
personal gift to support our mission, giving tours of our
medical center, speaking with civic groups and meeting
community members when they deliver handmade baby
blankets, hats, books and other donations. Each day I
am reminded of how interdependent we all are; in tough
times especially, we all must continue to work together
toward the common good.

National Therapeutic
Fitness Week 12-18th
Generous gifts from you, our friends at Peak Performance and the Principal Financial
Group Foundation provide year-round therapeutic fitness for students in our Family
Outpatient Center of United Services (FOCUS) Program. The program increases body
awareness, improving health and stress management. Students participate in golf and
swimming, and work with a physical fitness trainer to promote healthy habits.
Jennie Shipley, an employee at Broadlawns Medical Center, ran the 2008 Des Moines Marathon and
raised approximately $3,800 for FOCUS.
“As I trained for the marathon I thought about the kids who would benefit from therapeutic fitness
programs and how so many people were willing to donate precious funds even when the economy is
in the state that it is.”

We’re proud of the more than 400 babies who are born each year at Broadlawns!
They are all stars in our book! Megan Bobo was born at Broadlawns Medical Center
and raised in Des Moines. Now in her mid-twenties, she has propelled herself to a
successful musical career in Los Angeles. In a season that drew more than 200,000
contestants, Megan was the last girl to be cut for the 24th spot during the fifth season of American
Idol. Megan is the lead singer of the award-winning band, Neverwonder. She is also a regular on the
Variety Telethon. Thanks to Megan and our friends at Variety The Children’s Charity for helping
Broadlawns keep great kids healthy!

Babies born at Broadlawns can all grow up to be leaders in our community, just like Jamel Kirby,
who was born at Broadlawns Medical Center (then Polk County Hospital) in 1949. Jamel
grew up to become an All-American in track and field and all-conference in football. When
asked to serve on Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation Board he enthusiastically said
“Yes!” knowing that Broadlawns provides a unique service to the working families of Central Iowa.
Thanks to friends such as the Downtown Des Moines Kiwanis, Broadlawns Medical Center gives
child safety seats to new babies in need.

Since arriving at Broadlawns in 1988, Dr. Stephen Stefani, section chief of anesthesiology and
a member of the board of directors of Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation, has witnessed
many positive changes.
“Broadlawns today is a fully integrated health care delivery system providing care to those who need
us most,” Dr. Stefani explains. “Not only do we practice cost-effective, evidence-based medicine
with an emphasis on prevention. Physicians at Broadlawns Medical Center live the mission daily.
Each physician, nurse, social worker, technician or donor can make a significant impact to the work
of this Foundation.”
Donations to the Foundation allowed the purchase of a sentinel node probe for less invasive breast
cancer diagnostics with decreased pain, smaller incisions and fewer complications.

to afford one.

Diabetes causes more than 60 percent of nontraumatic lower-limb amputations. Every 30
seconds someone loses a limb or foot due to diabetes. There are alternatives.
“When I learned that a relatively inexpensive piece of needed equipment could help save a leg, I wanted
to help,” explained Stephanie Ganske, a member of the Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation
Board. Ganske and her friends at the Women’s Development Connection 2008 Fall Forum helped
raise funds to provide thermometry equipment for the Amputation Prevention Center.

Donna Biddle graduated from Broadlawns School of Nursing and became Broadlawns’ first
Employee Health Nurse. Donna had named Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation as
a beneficiary of her estate, and when she passed away June 16, 2008, her estate made a
generous gift to Broadlawns of more than $13,000. Her gift will support our recent renovations to
enhance clinical care. What a wonderful legacy from Donna.
In addition to cash contributions, donations of new clothing, mittens, scarves, coats and boots can
make a real difference to the families who visit Broadlawns. You can collect and deliver items to
Broadlawns, and we will see that they are distributed to those who need them.

The Rosses have made the Broadlawns Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program
a family affair. Kelly Ross, MD, class of 1984, knew he wanted a hands-on experience to
gain knowledge, as well as leadership skills. Broadlawns Medical Center has a reputation of
providing both and was a good fit for the young Iowan. While Kelly was a resident, Ben Ross, future
physician, was born at Broadlawns in 1981.
Ben Ross, MD, a first-year resident in 2009, shares his father’s reasons for choosing Broadlawns.
“Broadlawns is like a community hospital even though it is in the heart of Des Moines,” Ben stated.
“Independent decision-making is encouraged and the autonomy that residents have was a major
factor in choosing Broadlawns.”

Nurses play a critical role on the patient care delivery team. A 1974 graduate of Broadlawns
Nursing School, Betty Jones, RN, has participated in extensive changes in nursing. Nurses
are valued as an equal member of the care team, and care has become more patient-centered.
Today nurses at Broadlawns lead committees addressing ethics as well as professionalism, in addition
to working with the director of patient and guest relations. The nursing profession has evolved, and
nurses today balance patient relationships with the use of new technologies for documentation.
Max Schott & Associates provided a new 12-lead EKG machine for our emergency department.

Our 2008 Fall Gala was a great evening where our friends helped raise more than $116,000
toward the purchase a new 3-D diagnostic ultrasound. Guests had fun mingling with old and new
acquaintances all in support of the Broadlawns mission to provide high-quality health care for all
residents of Polk County.

renovation and expansion of the hospital and clinics are designed to ensure that Broadlawns
continues to provide quality health care for our children and our children’s children.

• Wear properly fitting shoes with good support.
• Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly.
• When getting a pedicure, check that all instruments have been properly sterilized or supply your
own instruments.
• If you are diabetic, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist at least once a year for examination
and regular foot care.

Sylvia Meyers knew in high school that she wanted to be a nurse. She started at Broadlawns
School of Nursing in 1962 because she believed that the Broadlawns emergency department
was “the place to be” to make a difference. Her fondest memories of nursing school include
living in the dormitory and making many wonderful life-long friends.
Now retired, she reflects, “Some of the greatest advancements in nursing are in evidence-based
practices, standardization of care and quality indicators.” Sylvia encourages new nurses to “be proud of
your profession, be diligent, practice good judgment and exhibit nursing leadership.” Sylvia continues
to apply her passion for caring by serving on the Broadlawns Medical Center Foundation Board.

Many of our staff members say Broadlawns feels like a family. This is especially true for three
members of the Coppola family. Twins Chance Coppola, DO and Ryan Coppola, DO, are
graduates of the Broadlawns Family Medicine Residency Program class of 2006, and their
cousin Tony Coppola, DO, is in the class of 2009. “Broadlawns offers a highly regarded medical
residency program,” says Tony. “Residents are allowed to practice medicine and provide patient care.
That’s important to me.”
Drs. Chance and Ryan Coppola are excited about the physical changes planned for Broadlawns
emergency department. “The anticipated expansion is long overdue and will help us deliver highquality
care,” Chance added.
