The FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker is a high-qualtiy, full-range loudspeaker for reproducing
voice and light music business music applications. This 16-watt, passive loudspeaker
can be flush-mounted above the ceiling, in plenum spaces, or pendant-mounted in open
ceilings. The Model 16 meets U.S. standards for combination music and evacuation systems.
The Model 16 EU variant meets worldwide standards for combination music and evacuation systems.
Where can I install the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker?
The Model 16 loudspeaker is designed for quick and easy installation:
• Flush-mounted in a solid or tile ceiling using a standard eight-inch hole
• Pendant-mounted in an open ceiling using the optional pendant-mounting kit
• In air-handling spaces – with plenum cover
• In existing ceiling holes up to 12 inches across, using the optional retrofit kit.

The FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker is perfect for background music applications. Because of its
diameter, the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker is perfect for retrofits where customers wish to
update or upgrade the sound system in their space. Where needed, we have a retro fit kit to disguise
ragged ceiling edges and mount the Model 16 in an oversized hole.

What is new or different about the FreeSpace ® Model 16 loudspeaker?
The FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker is new and different in these ways:
• The enclosure has been completely redesigned to include new integrated mounting arms.
• The speaker is constructed of PC/ABS plastic to create a lightweight, yet strong enclosure
that meets all regulatory standards for combination evacuation and music systems.
This plastic is used extensively in telephone and computer enclosures.
•The tap setting adjustment is easily accessible from the front of the loudspeaker.
• The loudspeaker is plenum rated when used with the plenum cover.
• The loudspeaker meets worldwide standards for use in fire and evacuation systems.
• The loudspeaker is passive and does not require active equalization.
• The loudspeaker has 96dB SPL max output for improved performance. With 84 dB sensitivity, it is
efficient and requires less power amplification than other speakers in its class.
What is the difference in performance between the new FreeSpace Model 16 and the
Model 8 loudspeaker?
The FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker plays 6 dB louder and has improved acoustic performance
over the FreeSpace model 8 loudspeaker.

These two loudspeakers perform exactly the same acoustically. The Model 16 EU loudspeaker is
designed to meet worldwide standards for evacuation sound systems. The Model 16 EU has a
ceramic connector with thermal fuse connections that meet European codes for use in combination
evacuation and music systems.

What comes in the box with the FreeSpace ® Model 16 loudspeaker?
The Model 16 loudspeaker is ready to mount in a hard or tile ceiling right out of the box. Use of the
tile bridge is recommended for most tile ceiling applications to distribute the weight of the speaker to
the ceiling support structure.

How do I install the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker?
After the hole is cut in the ceiling or tile, attach the input wires to the rear terminal. Fasten a safety
cable to the seismic tab on the rear as necessary. Put the speaker in the opening and extend the
three anchors with a screwdriver from the front baffle. After the anchors are tightened and the tap
setting is adjusted, attach the grille.
How do I pendant-mount the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker?
Using the optional pendant mount kit, connect the hanging cable with the supplied eye screws to the
three hang points on the speaker. Slide the cosmetic surround onto the back can and suspend.
Does the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker meet the local codes for fire and evacuation
loudspeakers?
The FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker meets the United States local codes for installation in fire and
evacuation systems. Specifically it meets these codes: BS5839 Part 8; NEN 2575; and IEC 60849.
Can I use the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker with other loudspeakers?
Yes, you can mix the Model 16 loudspeaker with any other loudspeaker in a complete system, as
long as there is no special EQ on the lines connected to the Model 16 loudspeaker.

What bass speaker do you recommend for projects where extended bass response is
needed?
In systems where extended bass response is needed, the FreeSpace ® Model 16 loudspeaker can be
used with the FreeSpace 3 Series II Acoustimass ® bass module. For wall mounting, you can use the
bass module with its surface-mount accessory kit. You can also pendant mount the bass module with
its optional pendant-mount kit.
What are the connectors on the speaker?
The connector is a three-position barrier strip with supervisory connections. The Model 16EU loudspeaker
has a three-position ceramic connector.
What are the available tap settings?
The tap settings at 70V are: 1W, 2W, 4W, 8W and 16W
The tap settings at 100V are: 2W, 4W, 8W, and 16W
The tap setting at 8 ohm is 16W
How do I change the tap settings for the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker?
Remove the grill. Then, using a flathead screwdriver, turn the switch to the desired tap setting.
Is the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker actively equalized?
No. No controller or equalization cards are required for the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker. There
is an optional EQ card available to enhance the acoustic performance. PC 33313
What amplifier do you recommend for the FreeSpace Model 16 loudspeaker?
We recommend the M2150 Commercial Power Amplifier or the FreeSpace E4 amplifier/processor
for most installations.
What are the design rules?
