Write a lesson plan for teaching ' Expressing ability' to the students of grade six. Sample answer a. List at least six visual aids for teaching English. Select one out of the list and describe its ways of construction and use in classroom. Visual aids are inseparable from teaching. Visual aids can help the language teacher in making his/her class lively and interesting. In a language class, the teacher introduces as many visual aids relating to the lesson as possible. The pupils are always curious to know the use of the variety of materials the teacher has introduced in class. Visual aids brighten up the classroom. They help in bringing more variety and interest into a language lesson. Not only this, they are also used to decorate a classroom. They also help a language teacher to create situations in which the meaning of the utterances can be made clear. The most important six visual aids are a) black board b) flash cards c) charts, d) pictures, e) magazine cut outs and f) match stick drawings Here I am going to write down about how to prepare flash cards and use them in classroom. Flashcards are pieces of cards. They may contain sounds, letters, words, phrases, sentences, etc. Flashcards are very useful inexpensive aids in teaching English. When the teacher writes letters words, etc. on the flashcards they should sufficiently be large enough. When the teacher puts up a card the pupils even from the last benches should be able to read them without difficulty. Children can also use them, working in groups, pairs or individually. Ways of preparing Required materials are cardboard paper, ruler, pencil, and a pair of scissors. The sizes of the flash cards vary according to the picture or text to be shown. Items to be shown may be single letters, groups of letters, or words, or they may be pictures of complicated situations. Flash cards should be easily visible to the students. A few examples of flash cards are: 62
table a man This is a book Use of flashcards The flash cards are used for: pictorial representation of single concepts, for example, of actions or objects. revision of known language. recombination or manipulation work cues for starting stories. prompt for drill activities. teaching spelling teaching vocabulary While using flashcards, teacher should flash the cards and tell the students what they need to do with the cards clearly. For example, by flashing the cards simple instructions can be given, e.g. point to the window, open your book, touch the door, raise your right hand, and so on. The students read silently the instructions on the card and do the same. The names of the pupils may also be mentioned in the cards, e.g. Rajan, open the door. From this activity, we can develop reading skill in students and teach how to give and follow instruction. b. Once a head teacher observed a class of English in grade six where the teacher was translating all the words whatever he taught in the name of teaching their meaning. What do you think about translating whole words into mother tongue? Is it always a good way of teaching vocabulary? What are the alternative ways to teaching meaning of vocabulary? Hint for answer 63
