Lesson planning<br />

A lesson plan is a description of the presentation of a lesson. It involves pre<strong>view</strong>ing the<br />

lesson to be delivered and re<strong>view</strong>ing the activity just completed. It is an arrangement of all<br />

the details of the lesson. It involves careful thinking about the resources to be used <strong>for</strong> the<br />

successful completion of a lesson. Planning in language involves selection and gradation of<br />

the language materials, skills to be inculcated, activities to be undertaken and anticipation of<br />

the difficulties likely to occur during the lesson.<br />

A successful lesson is well planned and organized, and will help to ensure that teaching and<br />

learning time is maximised, resources are ready and that there is a range and balance of<br />

activities. It helps teacher to teach systematically and orderly, and induces confidence in the<br />

teacher.<br />

Characteristics of a good lesson plan<br />

� A lesson plan is always carefully written be<strong>for</strong>ehand.<br />

� Specific objectives to be achieved are clearly stated.<br />

� Timings <strong>for</strong> the different parts of the lesson are included.<br />

� It suggests a variety of teaching and learning procedures.<br />

� The activities devised in the lesson plan take into account the individual<br />

differences of the pupils.<br />

� It also lists definite and appropriate assignment to be per<strong>for</strong>med by the pupils<br />

at home.<br />

Components of a lesson plan<br />

The components of a lesson plan are described as below:<br />

a) Details of class<br />

In this part, subject, period, unit, teaching item, time, number of students, class and<br />

date are mentioned.<br />

b. Specific learning objectives<br />

These are the main component of a lesson plan as the rest components depend on<br />

them. Objectives written in lesson plan should be specific, measurable, achievable,<br />

relevant and time bound. Look at the following two objectives and decide which one<br />

is specific.<br />

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:<br />

i) know about the words ( receive, dull, ignore, excite and kind),<br />
