a. Subjective test: In subjective test, scoring is done according to the personal judgment
of the marker. As the name suggests, this is subjective in nature. The examinees will
have freedom in expression and the score is based upon the impression the examiner
makes.
Short answer questions and long answer questions are the two types of subjective
test. Look at the examples below:
Short answer questions Long answer questions
a) What is your name?
b) How old are you?
c) How far is your school from your
house?
a) Describe your house in a paragraph.
b) Rewrite the story of ........................
c) How did you spend the winter
vacation? Write in a hundred
words.
b. Objective test: Objective test is has only one single correct answer. It is examined
quickly and consistently. They are easy to mark. Under objective test, there are four
types of tests. They are, matching, true and false, multiple choices and fill in the
blank (completion) test.
Matching
In this kind of testing, students are given letter matching, word matching, and
sentence matching etc. to test any skill. Here students are given two columns and
they are asked to match them appropriately. For example, match these people and
their jobs.
A B
A hair-dresser grows crops
A farmer sells medicines.
A chemist makes bread and cakes.
A baker cuts hair.
True or False (Right or Wrong)
These are the most commonly used objective tests. In true or false items, the students
are asked to mark whether a statement is true of false. The students have to write "T"
for the true statement and "F" for false statement. Sometimes a passage is given to
read. Then some statements are written below it. Such tests are used for testing
comprehension. For example,
i. Monday is the third day of the week.
ii. January is the first month of the year.
iii. There are seven days in a week.
iv. Friday is the fifth day of the week.
