Language Testing
Testing is universally recognized as an essential part of any educational programme. In a
student centred teaching, both teachers and students need to be involved in testing and
evaluation.
Very often, test, evaluation and examination are used synonymously though they are
different. So, a distinction should be made.
Evaluation is a wider term which includes both test and examination. It is a process
of obtaining information and making decision.
Examination is an attempt to find out the ability and knowledge of pupils by means
of a test. In other words, it is a formal way of conducting a test.
Test is a measuring device which we use when we want to obtain information on
individual's performance. It can be defined as a series of questions on the basis of
which some information is sought. Tests may be constructed primarily as devices to
reinforce learning and to motivate the students. Some other aims of a test are to :
diagnose each student's weakness and strengths,
assess the progress of the students by measuring their achievement of the
instructional objectives,
determine the proficiency of the students,
give students information on their academic achievement,
determine whether to promote students from one class to another,
 develop healthy competition among students.
Test items:
Test items are the questions we ask the students to test their language performance. Different
types of questions can be asked and the students' freedom of expression can be limited by the
type of test items we give them. The test items can be roughly divided into two types called
subjective test items and objective test items.
