v) Cut out pictures<br />
Colourful pictures from different magazines and newspapers can be collected and the<br />
pictures can be attached to the classroom walls, or small pieces of sand paper can be<br />
glued to their backs and they can be displayed on the flannel board. The use of colour<br />
pictures is given below:<br />
a. Cut out figures are important in teaching vocabulary: It is said that a picture is worth<br />
ten thousand words. There<strong>for</strong>e, if the meanings of concrete objects are taught, it is<br />
far better to use their pictures rather than to give their definition or explanation.<br />
b. Cut-outs are used <strong>for</strong> written compositions: pictures and cut outs can be used in<br />
similar ways of displaying pictures on flannel board. The cut outs can be displayed<br />
and the students are asked to describe them. If the description is made orally, it is<br />
composition.<br />
c. The cut outs are used <strong>for</strong> situational use of language. With the help of cut-outs,<br />
figures illustrate the situations in which particular types of expressions are<br />
associated.<br />
vi) Matchstick figures<br />
The matchstick pictures are easy to draw because they lack smaller details. These figures<br />
are mainly drawn with sticks/lines, square, triangle, circle etc. They do not need an artist.<br />
Every teacher with a little practice can draw these figures. They can easily be drawn on<br />
the board. They can be used <strong>for</strong> the following purposes in language teaching.<br />
a) Teaching action verbs. e.g. dancing, eating.<br />
b) Teaching adjectives e.g. sad, happy.<br />
c) Practising structure : present continuous<br />
d) Teaching vocabularies<br />
e) Teaching prepositions<br />
f) Telling stories etc.<br />
vii) Wall pictures<br />
Large pictures showing street scene, a market place, a playing field, a garden, a building<br />
complex etc. can be very effective <strong>for</strong> oral practice as well as <strong>for</strong> writing connected<br />
sentences. In this a series of such pictures can also be used to narrate a story in the<br />
manner of the popular comics. The readymade wall pictures can also be brought from<br />
the market or prepared by the teacher oneself. Even large magazines cut outs can be<br />
pictured on the large sheet of paper to make an interesting wall picture. In making wall<br />
pictures attractive, colour plays vital role.<br />
The use of wall pictures can be very much fruitful in the following areas:<br />
a. Listening and reading comprehension.<br />
