Teacher makes two columns; column A having pictures and column B having<br />

sentences. Students read the sentences silently and match the sentence to the<br />

correct picture.<br />

c. Match sentence halves.<br />

Teacher takes sentences from the textbook and divides them into two halves.<br />

Teacher writes the halves on the cards and scrambles them. Students read the<br />

sentences silently and match the halves to make correct sentences.<br />

d. Arrange jumbled lists of words<br />

Teacher can take sentences from the textbook and jumble the words. Students<br />

rearrange the words to make correct sentences. This activity can be done with the<br />

help of card on a pocket board or students can rearrange the words in their copy<br />

books. Examples;<br />

Jumbled sentence: is /girl/ a /Mina<br />

Correct sentence: Mina is a girl.<br />

Teacher takes a paragraph from text book or any story and jumbles the<br />

sentences. Students rearrange the sentences to make a paragraph. This<br />

activity is appropriate <strong>for</strong> grade III, IV and V.<br />

e. Completing exercise:<br />

Teacher provides sentences with gap filling. Students read the sentences and fill<br />

in appropriate words. The sentences should be from familiar text <strong>for</strong> com<strong>for</strong>table<br />

exercise.<br />

f. Find odd one out<br />

Teacher writes four words on the board. Three of them are related words but one<br />

is different. Students read the words and identify the different word. Example;<br />

cabbage, potato, mango, pumpkin<br />

Teacher: Which one is odd?<br />

Students: mango.<br />

g. Games<br />

Students are asked to make nine square grids. The teacher makes a list of 12 or<br />

more words on the board. Students are asked to choose any nine words from the<br />

list and write one word in each square of the grid. Teacher calls out the words<br />

randomly. If student has that word he checks it off. The student who checks off<br />

all the words first is the winner.<br />

h. Comprehension<br />

In this activity, students read a text (essay, story, poem etc.) and complete the<br />

task regarding the text.<br />
