b) Matching letters with sounds
After introducing the letter shapes and combination of shapes to make letters, it's
better to demonstrate letters and introduce their names (in sound).
Examples:
Teacher: a (demonstrate the letter a and say /ei/
Teacher: p (demonstrate the letter a and say /pi/
Teacher: i (demonstrate the letter a and say /ai/
c) Recognizing words
After recognizing the letters and the shapes, students need to recognize the words
which may be classroom language words (sit down, stand up, listen, touch your
nose, smile, laugh, be quiet, good), words used at the beginning of the textbook and
names of objects that students can see in the classroom.
Other activities for teaching reading
a. Read and do
Teacher writes commands on the board and points to one of them at a time.
Students read the pointed command and obey the command. Instead, the teacher
writes the commands or instructions on cards, one command on one card and
shows the cards one by one. Students read them silently and act upon the
command.
b. Match objects and picture with words, sentences and a text.
