b. Teaching speaking skills<br />

Speaking of a language is vital <strong>for</strong> communication. It is the speaking skill through<br />

which people express their ideas, opinions, and emotions, reacts to others and<br />

influences them. We need a great deal of practice in order to be able to generate new<br />

sentences that suit our purposes.<br />

The golden rules to be followed <strong>for</strong> developing speaking skills are:<br />

� Give the child plenty of opportunities to listen to and imitate sounds made in<br />

meaningful contexts:<br />

� Have him/her repeat the speech in similar contexts;<br />

� Stimulate him/her to speak on their own in matters of day-to-day life with some<br />

promptings, where necessary;<br />

� Give encouragement to him/her as s/he speaks so that s/he gets emboldened to<br />

go on speaking;<br />

� Do not interrupt the child in the middle of his/her speech;<br />
