Communicative approach
Communicative approach was developed as a reaction against grammar based
approaches especially in Britain. In the late 20 th century, some applied linguists began to
argue that language was the vehicle for communication and the aim of language teaching
was to develop communicative ability in the students.
According to communicative approach, language is a system for the expression or
meaning. The primary function of language is communication.
Characteristics of communicative approach
1. The aim of language teaching is to develop the ability to communicate or
communicative competence.
2. The role of teacher will be that of a presenter, participant and counsellor.
3. The learners learn by communicating each other.
4. The materials used with a communicative approach are communicative functions,
dialogues, task based materials.
5. Functional syllabus is used.
6. Grammar is just a look for communicative approach.
7. Student centred techniques such as group work, pair work, role-play, discussion etc.
are used.
8. Errors are the sign of learning. Grammatical errors are tolerated for the sake of
communication. This means fluency is more important than accuracy.
9. Students‟ mother tongue is not used.
Teaching four language skills
a. Teaching listening skill
Listening is the first language skill and also called natural and receptive skill.
A sample procedure for teaching a listening text is as follows:
Get the pupils ready with textbooks, papers and pencils.
Ask them to look at the exercise in the textbook or worksheet.
Give them instructions in simple English. Use Nepali for giving instructions if
necessary.
Read out the text. If you have the material taped, play it.
Give enough time to do the exercises or perform the tasks.
Collect the work or provide feedback on the exercises or tasks
