English Curriculum 2064 BS are to:<br />

� communicate in speech and writing with other people who speak English,<br />

� understand and use the language functions prescribed in the curriculum,<br />

� gain skills of developing competency in reading different types of written materials,<br />

and<br />

� develop an enthusiasm <strong>for</strong> and appreciation of reading both <strong>for</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation and<br />

enjoyment.<br />

The competencies of Basic level English (6-8) ( As per the Basic level curriculum 2068<br />

under piloting)<br />

English being an academic language course should help students of this level gain<br />

competency at grammatical, discourse, sociolinguistic and strategic level. Hence, the<br />

following competencies have been derived from the above mentioned levels <strong>for</strong> the Basic<br />

level (Grades 6, 7 and 8) students:<br />

� Listen and comprehend spoken English in a variety of personal, social and academic<br />

contexts.<br />

� Communicate in spoken English in a variety of personal, social and academic<br />

contexts<br />

� Comprehend written English in personal, social and academic contexts.<br />

� Communicate in written English in a variety of personal, social and academic<br />

contexts.<br />

� Develop skills and competencies to use English as a medium <strong>for</strong> further studies and a<br />

tool <strong>for</strong> obtaining in<strong>for</strong>mation and enjoyment<br />

� Learn to think creatively and critically to develop the language skills by promoting<br />

tolerance, inclusiveness and socio-cultural harmony<br />

Curriculum<br />

A curriculum is a master plan of all the activities of a school. In other words, it is the<br />

lifeblood of a school. Curriculum is also the term narrowly used <strong>for</strong> the course of study<br />

or syllabus in a school or college. The curriculum sets the objectives, selects teaching<br />

items to achieve the objectives, mentions the methods to be used to teach those teaching<br />

items, and tells about the evaluation procedures to be adopted to measure the students'<br />

achievements. Basically, curriculum contains objectives, learning outcomes, content,<br />

teaching method and evaluation.<br />
