The future of shooting
Whilst it is interesting to look back, our most challenging time
is in the immediate, and in the future.
There is no doubt that the future of shooting in its present
form in internauonal, national, state and local c~rr~peUUon is
under a seltous threat. The governing bodies of Olympic and

Commonwealth Games would not in the least worry If shoot-
ing was to be removed fmm thek events.
Wc must continue to impmve the standard orow sport to a postlion
whem we arc recognised intrn~ationally as the ones :o brat.
IntemaUonal mmoetition is essential to the verv existence of
our smallest club.&~ur fundlng is governed by d;r perfomance
world wide. and also by the srandards and methods of
coaching we adopt.
!t therefore stands to reason that cad, state rrr~st support
each otllur state Lrr all disulplh!e~ ufalloori~.g, and each dirci
pUne must support other disciplines
At the present. shatgunnlng is the shooting discipline in Aus-
halia that is producing rhc goods inurnntionnlly and we must
see that this continues.
Our nauonal shootlng bodies are fully aware of this current situ-
ation and should be supporting us to the fullest. but are they7
It seems each are quite content to go their own way, and that
within our governing bodies are people there solely for what
thev can eet out of it. not what is best for the camoeUtors
and shooing. I belleve that if a team is travelling overseas, or
for that matter competing in Australia in an internauonal
event, then either tie team coach or the team manager must
come from the discipline with the largest number of mem-
bers. ifwe are to get the best from the team. This should go
without saying If the team consists of only members from a
particular discipline.
ACTA Sporting Clays Nationals/Rules
In reply to many inquiries. it is intended to run an ACTA
Sporting Clays Nationals again. Jointly with the SporUng
Shooters Association of Australla. later in the year in Victoria.
We will shortly be issulng the rules govemlng the running of
ACI'A Sportlng Clays and can only apologisr for the delay in an-
nouncing a date for the Nationals, and in publlahhg the rules.
New Customs Forms
All shooters re-entering Australia are now to have in their pas-
session a Customs Permit No. B7W. These forms are issued
by the relevent WUce Finrarms Reglshy and are not available
fmm the ACTA Oflce.

ACTA and Field & Game Team Shoot
An inaugural teams challenge shoot between the ACTAand
Field &Game will be held at the Melbourne Gun Club on Sat-
urday 8th April. 1995.
?he number of shooters for each team will be decided by the
association with the least number ofreoresentatives oresent.
i.e. If the ACTA has 52 members and &e Field &Game 60. the
teams will consist of 52 members from each.
The event consists of50 targets Skeet. 25 targets ACTA Sport-
ing and 25 targets Double Barrel.

This was one of the largest contingents of shooters and om-
cials to represent the A.C.T.A. at an international competition.
comprising of Manager. Coaches (Col Burt and Fred Schmet-
zer). 2 members of the Jury (Peter Strike and Brian Pmsser]
and 35 shooters. 19 shooting UJT and the balance shooting

Members of our gmup started departing from Australia on Feb.
ruary lst, with the last group flying out on February 7th. The
actual games beginning on the 4th February and finishing on
the 10th February.
Thursday 2nd February
A 4.00am departure from my home in Murray Bridge to the
Adelaide aimort saw me flvine off to Svdnev where I met uo

was delayed by 1 hour and we fmally arrived in New Zealand
at 5.30pm. Picked up one of our 2 mini buses (8 seater
Toyotal and with Fred navigating, we headed for O'Rourke
Hall at the University Campus. A few wmng turns saw us fi- b
nally arrive at 6.45pm.
Our accommodation at O'Rourke Hall consisted of rooms of
varying sizes with 1 bed per mom. There was no airconditioning
which left some rooms quite stuffv. Some moms had balconiEs
wldt sUdirlg doors averiaoklng one of Lhr main streets.
The area was very noisey, csprcinUy in the ~.arly hours fmm
garbagc mcks and night cltlhv that wcrc In the vicinity. There

mom proved to be a 'typical canteen' with pretty ordinary food.
Thursday evening. after booking in. Col. Fred and I had a
rushed dinner as Col and I had to attend a technical meetine

Saturday 4th February

with team events fdr bath Trap and Skeet. weather &dlsons
much lmpmved and all shooters were eager to stan.
Both 'A' Tmo Team and the 'A' Skeet Team won their team
shoots. The-'A' Trap Team with Russell Mark. Mlchacl Dlamnd
and Adam Vclla shot 209/225. Our '6' Team came in
second place wlth 201/225. team members beinz - Ben KcUcy.

The 'A' Skeet Team also won, shootlng a 209/225 wlth Cllve
Baton. John Summers and Cratg Meuleman. The 'B' Skeet
Team took 3rd place wlth 195/225. shot by Barty Brghenti.
Guy Yoannidis and Michael Inguanti.
At the end ofthe day's cumpetition we all had huge @Ins on our
faces, we could not have asked for better results for our team.
Back to the University, flrst to drop off my passengers, then
on to the airport to pick up another inmming shooter.
Following dlnner and presentations which concluded about
9.30pm we had a discusslon wlth the members of the Jury
and Ray Andrews, the pmblem we had with quota positions
was M y resolved much to ow satisfaction.
Back out to the airport to pick up 2 of our lady shooters who
new in at 11.30pm.
Getting to know all our tour operators at the airport and
found yet another way back to the Universlty.
In bed at 1.00am.
Sunday 5th February
Up early for a 7.30pm departure, the start of the indivludal
events in 'hap and Skeet. 75 targets.
?he brand of days had been changed due to a technical pmb-
lem and we were not satisfied wlth the unlformlty of colow.
but due to the excellent work of the July members this pmb-
lem was overcome immediately.
Competition then commenced with the weather condltlons
5ne but overcast.
AU shooters putting good scores on the board in both Trap
and Skeet. Four ofthe ladles in the Double Trap team pxac-
ticed in the afternoon.
Back to the Unlverslty at 3.45pmwith the shooters relaxing
for the rest of the afternoon and evening. preparing them-
selves for the next day of competition.
10.00pm saw me back to the airport plcldng up yet another
shooter.
Final day ofthe individual hap and skeet Eveyone in g d spMts.
At the end of the competition of 125 targets. Australla had 5
shoorers golng into t& nnal. At the endof the llnal25 targets.
Ben Kelley was triumphant wlth 139/150. Russell Mark
138/150 and Mlchacl Dlamond on 137/150 came In 3rd.
Adam Vella shot 136/150 and Tom 'Turner 134/150.
We had in fact just won 2 Olympic quota spots
In the Skeet. Australla wain. at the end of 125 tareets. had 3
shootrrs in the Dnal. the'ovcrau result belng ~raigkeuleman
shoollng 140/150. John Summers 137/150 and Cllve Barton

Drug testing then took place and Double Trap practice for all
concerned.
Back to the University at 5.00pm for team photos, presenta-
tion tlme, at which I was a very proud onlooker, and following
dinner I had an informal meeting wlth the Jury members
while some of the shooters celebrated.
Tuesday 7th February
Start of Double Trap competition with all competitors keen to
start Weather conditions fine and sunny.
At the ~.nd of 150 largrts for Ule Open Double Rap. we had 5
shooten in the flnal The final placlngs went to Michael Diamond
172/200. CraiCTllley lti6/200, and Ben Kelley with
167/202. Steve ~abe-m&shot 166/202 and Tom kmer 156/200.
Another Olympic quota spot to Australia.
Wlth the Ladles Double Trap, at the end of 120 targets we had
4 ladies in the final. The end resrllt being Deserie tluddleston
116/160. Ann Marce Roklxs on 115/ 160. Laz Lloyd on
102/160 and Glenlss LawRnce on 93/160. Ann~aree had a
bad call on 1 target leaving her in 2nd place.
Deserie winnlng yet another Olympic quota spot for us.
1st and 2nd place getten in all Double Trap then had to go to
drug testing.
Back to the University with the hops and then off to the au-
port to pick up anather 7 shooters just fiying in.
Following dinner. I was once more back to the airport collect-
ing anather 7 shooters who had Just arrived.
Now on 'first name' basis with the tour operators and police at
the atrport.
Wednesday 8th February
Early start - 5.00am taking a bus load of the ISU shooters
who were leaving on an early flight home.
Back to the University to pick up the DTL and American Skeet
shooters to go to the gun club for practice, weather conditions
nne and warm.
Back early in the afternoon to take 2 more bus loads of ISU
shooten catching flights at 4.30pm.
'That fight following dinner. Col and I had a few qulet drWrs
with Ewan Pirie. New Zealand Team Manager. and a few of the
shooters beiore retiring.
Thursday 9th February
Up at 6.00am us usual. No action in the camp, the afncial
Waker upper' had slept in! We s$, however managed a
7.30am start far the gun club to begin competition at 9.0Oam.
Weather fine and warm.
The iirst 100 targets for the team shoats for single rise and skeet
and the nrst 100 targets of the individual were being shot. , ,
At the end of the day. the Open Single Rise Team of John Far-
rell. Dennis Lymn and Col Burt (Col had to step into this posi-
don as the governing body would not allow Nathan Cassellsfo
shoot in the Open as well as the Junior Team), won the team
event. The score was 888/900 (paint score).

This year again, by holding the carnival over 3 days we were
able to welcome a large contingent of interstate shooters.

fist event to be shot and Tony Rohrlach took out the Champi-
onship by shooting 71/71. He has now won this event 2 years

50 tgt Fisher Flrcarms State Point Smre Championship was
the last programmed event and here again it was won by one
of our interstate visitors - J. 'Bert' Boschetti from W.A. with a

Clay talget and 5eld shooters will be saddened to hear of the
passing of Jack Edgell.
Jack was born at Cwnamble December 4. 1904 and in his
earlv vears moved to Svdnev to iind work. and was to become

a vcry successful buslnessrnar~ in the paper bag industry.
Jack's favouritc sport was shooting ducks or rabblrs in the
Guleone or ~orhes areas where hebad manv friends. Jack
also-10Gd clay target shooung and many a ioung shooter has
benefited by an encouragement award donated by him.
On his retirement he moved to the Hemidale district where
his son bad a property. On the sale of the property Jack
moved to gueensland where he resided until hls death.
Jack was pre deceased by his wife Muriel but Is survived by
daughter Janice, son John and their farnllies.

tral Zone Championships held at Rockhampton Gun Club on
the 4 & 5 February 1995.

charity shoot
huge success
On Sunday January 29. the Colac Gun Club conducted a
charitv ZZ shoot with proceeds being donated to tire Royal
children's Hospital. -
Irt uxcevv of 81.700 was ralsed in memory of Zac fiolt. a junior
rnember of Ulu Colac club who dled some 12 months ago and
had spent many months at the Royal Children's Hospital.
ZZ shootlng is as close as you can get to live bird shootlng.
The onty difference is, you are shoothg at a plastic target that
is thmwn and Its Nght is similar to that of a plgeon.
Condittons for the day were perfect, warm and sunny with no
wind. Some 45 shooters travelled fmm all overVictorla and a
large crowd of spectators watched the actlon, some of whom
also had a shot for the cost of targets only. It turned out to be
a magnificent day.
A hot mast lunch consfstlng of mast park, lamb and wi!d duck
cwked and pmvlded by the Holt boys. Greg. Jeff and Steven
and se~ved by the many ladies on hand, was much appredated.
The went itself was the Western DisMct 25 target ZZ Champlonshlp.
Shooting commenced at llam and Dnlshed about 6.30pm.
With a total of $1.450 in the pool. any shooter that could
shoot 10 targets sbaight was going to be in the money.
The overall winner of the title was Ray Parker of Colac who
shot 24/25 for the day and collected $600 for an outlay of $85
for noms.
Other Colac shooters to do well were Warren Willlamson winning
$80 and Robert Brain who collected $150. These two
shooters had never shot at Z targets before.
Robert also won half a case of cartridges in one of the raes.
He shot 21/25 for the day.
In the h t 10 targets. eight shooters collected $55 each. The
second 10 targets. four shooters mllected $95 each. The third
10 targets, four shooters mllected $80 each and on the last
10, Paul Chipperfield was the only shooter to dmp all 10 targets
inside the fence and collected $320. Had Ray Parker shot
that one elusive target that got away on him, he would have
won a further $160.

I am pleased to announce that the 1994 Presidentlal Medal
has been awarded to ACTA Past President Mr Jim Scott
Jim Scott registered with the Dubbo Gun Club in 1960 when
he commenced shooting. In 1961 he was elrutrd to Uir Committee
and the follo& - vear - he was elected to the office of
Vice President.
Dubbo Gun Club went into recess for a short time owing to
the loss ofthe club slte at Terramuneemine. Jim then ioined
the Wmn Gun Club and was clcct~d to Ore cornrnltte;
where he was most active in club affaln. lic continued to seek
a suitable gmund for Dubba Gun Club and when 011s was
found he assisted in the Dubbo Gun Club with the comolete
establishment ofthe new club facilities. Jim accepted the position
of Trustee of the club for a number of years until the club
was on a sound footing, both socially and i\nancially
When the Western Zone of NSW was formed he was a foundation
member. In 1973 he was elected Vice President and ap-
~mdmatelv three vears later he was elected President -a
position wiich heheld for some years and under his guidance
the Western Zone became flrmly established.
With the formation of the New South Wales Clav Tamet Asso-
ciadon he was elected as Delcgarc to the Assuciauunuin 1973
and held thls position until he reslgned in lW2. Durlng the
19 years he was on the New South Walcs Exccurive Commit-
tee: he held the position of Treasurer and Vice President for
appmxlmately 11 years.
Jim was elected to the AC.T.A. as delegate for NSW in 1981.
Whilst on the Executive of the ACTA heserved 7 years on the
Management Committee. 2 years as Vice President, President
for 3% yeass (elected un-opposed on 3 occasions). He served
10 years on the ACTA Executive Committee and during his
term ofotilce he was vely instrumental in the purchase of our
buildinc in Mount Waverlev. which bas saved us the burden
of large rentals. .
As well as the above sewice at Club. Zone. State and National
level he has worked for the clay target shooting fraternity as
follows:
1. Jim was on the organislng committee to run the fist
Nationals to be held at Waeea Gun Club in 1984. he
followed this up by being onthe orgadsing committee
and Tournament Dlrector for the Nationals in 1988.
2. During the 1980s he worked with the Melbourne Gun Club
to runtthe k t Skeet National Championships in 1983:
again in 1984 and 1985.
3. During 1984 and 1985 he assisted with the ISU National
Championships.
4. Became a registered referee in 1960. he later became a
referee examiner, and then followed a period of years as
Rules Supexvlsor.
He has always made himself available to l&ree at any
shoot and was selected on three occasions to referee the
National Double Barrel Championship.
5. During his 10 years on the National Executive he kavelled
to eveIy capital clty in Australia and the Institute ofsport
in Canberra, not only to shoot, but to pmmote clay target
shooting.
Coaching: Jim is particularly interested in thls phase of the
sport and in 1982 he organised a big weekend at Dubbo with
the attendance of the state Coach. dl Zone Coaches and
many Club Coaches. In 1982 he also combined with Len Bhd
and organlsed the first Coaching Seminar in NSW which was
held at Cowra Gun Club. It was attended by NewtonThomas
(National Coach). George Bigs [Victorian State Coach). Pud
Burgess INSW State Coach), all Zone Caaches and a large
number of Club Coaches, and appmxlurately 150 shmten.

NSW Firearms Safety Awareness Council. One of the main ob-
jects of this muncfl is to organise and adminlster the testlng
of all persons (rifle, pistol, gun and general public] to quallfy
for a shwting llcence in NSW.
Jlrn has been a continuous member of the ACTA Tor 34 ycars
11960-19941 and during this dme has been on a Committee at
Club. Zone. Statc and National I ~ vfor L ~ 32 years (1960-1992).
He served hls Zone for 19 years. ttre Stare for 19 years and
the Nadonal Committee of the ACTA for 10 ywr.
Jim resigned all positions in 1991 and 1992 as he wished to
spend more time with his children and grand chfldren and for
personal reasons.
It is onlv flttlng that the 1994 Presidential Medal be awarded
to am& who has contributed to the sport of Clay Target
Shooting over so many years and has done so much in the de-
velopment of the sport.

On the weekend of the 4th & 5th of February the Collle Clay
Target Club held the 1995 West Coast Open. This is an annual
200 Double Barrel event sponsored by Pine Haullers, where
shooters compete over the two days for cash wlth the Overall
winner also receivtng a sash and trophy. The trophy being a
hand made set of solid sllver snap caps, engraved wlth the
West Coast Open and the yeaiofthe event (valued at $400).
Although eastern staters were truly missed this year (Lastyears
winner, Bffl Iles), shwters travelled from as far as Geraldton.
Perth. Nanvgin and sumundlng clubs for the weekend.
Early Saturday mornlng the weather looked threatening belng
cool and overcast but eventuallv turned into excellent mndi-
dons for the thmwlng of good lilrgets. By the end of competition
on Saturday only onc possiblc had been scod. Davld Fox shot
the 100/ LOO on Saturday and led the field by one target.
Saturday evenlng the shooters had a barbecue tea and refreshments,
with most of the shooters optlng for an early nght
ready for another full day of stiwt~ng on Sunday.
Nthough weather condiuons were perfect on Sunday, with
blue skies and very little wind, only two possibles were shot
over the dav wlth John Coverlev and GeoU Faulkes going to a
shoot off todetermine the day;winner, which endezin &off

On Saturday and Sunday 18-19 February, the Tamworth C1
Target Club held the annual two day skeet carnival which.
this year included the Northern Zone Skeet Carnival.
Shooters travelled fmm Queensland and Victoria as well as
throughout NSW to compete in what has become one ofthe
main skeet cdvals on the clay target shooting calander.
Some 70 shooters were in attendance for the two days to compete
