The Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) meets every

The Art Institute’s GSA brings together queer youth and 

straight allies to fight homophobia on campus and in the 

community. By raising awareness of different sexual and 

gender identities, and advocating for equal treatment for 

youth of all sexual orientations, through social engagements 

involving all members of the community. Our GSA 

will create a school environment free of homophobic 

harassment, therefore making our school a safe and 

comfortable community for all students.

Animation as Art

Animation faculty Craig Kelly and Randy 

Gossman has scored big time with their exhibition 

in the Mark K. Wheeler Gallery. They 

want you to think and enjoy and debate 

about how such a commercial medium can 

be made for art’s sake. 

“It has been stated that animation was not 

necessarily ‘not’ art but could never be ‘fine 

art’,” says Randy. “How does one crate an 

animation that does not serve as utility or 

common practice, that engages the audience’s 

sensibilities and makes the viewer 

think about greater things? 

“In hopes of establishing our argument, this 

show couples pieces that are abstract, conceptual 

and poetic with that which are commercial, 

concrete and narrative,” continues

Viva Las Vegas by Kerry Szymaski 

I took a group of 13 fashion merchandising 

and fashion design students to the MAGIC 

trade show is Las Vegas. MAGIC is one of 

the largest trade shows for apparel in the 

United States. The February show debuts

when Ray Nadeau, Story Artist with Disney, 

came to her classroom for a lecture 

and critique. 

Ray’s credits include Tinker Bell and the 

Lost Treasure, (Disney) due out this fall, 

Curious George feature (Universal), 

Winnie the Pooh’s Heffalump Movie 

(Disney), The Legend of Tarzan TV 

Series (Disney) and The Proud Family 

TV Series (Disney Channel). 

A graduate of FAU in 1992 with a fine 

arts degree, Ray completed and internship/fellowship 

in computer animation at 

the Florida Center for Electronic Communication

AiFL Students are only winners from US in Sony 

Photography Awards 

Under the guidance of veteran Photography 

instructor Don Sheffield, students Tim Detert (from 

Germany and now living in Hollywood, FL) and 

Grant Goldstein (originally from Chicago, Illinois, 

and now living in Aventura, FL), both current 

bachelor’s degree Photography students, were 

selected as the only United States winners in 

the Sony World Photography Awards. They were 

chosen from 14 schools in the United States and 

Canada as the two North American short-listed 

winners. They will be representing not only The Art 

Institute of Fort Lauderdale, but the United States 

and Canada. 

Students were invited to submit images which 

highlight an environmental issue specific to their 

country, resulting in an astonishing overall display. 

Twelve budding photographers have been chosen 

- two students from 6 institutions from 6 continents. 

The North American competition included:

The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale was invited 

along with 60 universities throughout the world 

to enter this competition. Sheffield served as the 

college’s on-site point person for this contest and 

solicited entries through his Photojournalism class 

during the fall quarter 2008. 

Sony is sending the students and Photography 

program chair William Cadieux to Cannes, France, 

to attend the Festival and Awards Ceremony at 

Sony World Photography Awards from April 13- 

April 17, 2009. During this week, Detert and Goldstein 

will be participating in multiple workshops 

with the other short-listed winners to compete for 

the grand prizes.

Getting Back to Nature 

On Thursday, March 5, AiFL instructor Nancy 

Doyle, along with Fashion Design student 

and Seminole Native American Judy Jones, 

presented “Legacies of the Kissimmee Prairie 

and Seminole Tribe.” This presentation of 

the free Lecture Luncheon Series included a 

delicious menu from Culinary and a fascinating 

film and talk about an area in Florida not 

many know about. 

After Nancy’s film, Judy talked and answered 

questions and showed the audience several 

original objects of art including a handmade 

doll, a colorful woven basket. The Kissimmee 

Prairie is one of Florida’s largest state 

preserves offering observations of wildlife, 

hiking/backpacking, biking, and horseback 

riding.

innovative displays 

through the use of 

green design at the 

West Palm Beach 

Home & Garden Show, March 20-22, at the South 

Florida Fairgrounds. The students are designing 

the grand entrance, The Palm Beach Post 

Home Improvement Stage, the college’s booths, 

and the tySPIES area (featuring products by Ty 

Pennington host of TV’s Extreme Makeover: Home 

Edition). 

“This is a unique opportunity for our students to 

experience a real world project,” says Interior 

Design Program Chair Bill Kobrynich and former 

ASID president. “We encourage our students to 

get out of the classroom and produce something 

meaningful such as the Red Cross Design House 

or working for Habitat for Humanity.” 

The South Florida students working on this project

Several AiFL Fashion students are finalists in the 

Miami Fashion Week student competition. They 

are: Derek Rackard, Anna Malloy, and Benjamin 

Lear. Francisco Quadros is in the emerging 

designer competition and Eduardo De las 

Casas is also showing. 

The student designer showcase will take place 

on March 19 at the SOHO Studios in the Wynwood 

Art District. One student designer will be 

chosen as the “Top Student Fashion Designer 

of the Year” and presented with an award at the 

closing Miami Moda Awards show on March 22
