5. Comments Received on New CPT Codes for CY 2009
We received comments on new CPT codes for CY 2009
including Category III codes. Since these are new codes
for CY 2009, they are subject to comment as part of this
final rule. Note: Category III codes are contractor
priced under the PFS.
H. Establishment of Interim PE RVUs for New and Revised
Physician’s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) Codes and
New Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Codes
for 2009
We have developed a process for establishing interim
PE RVUs for new and revised codes that is similar to that
used for work RVUs. Under this process, the AMA RUC
recommends the PE direct inputs (the staff time, supplies
and equipment) associated with each new code. CMS reviews
the recommendations in a manner similar to our evaluation
of the recommended work RVUs. The AMA RUC recommendations
on the PE inputs for the new and revised CY 2009 codes were
submitted to CMS as interim recommendations.
We have accepted, in the interim, the PE
recommendations submitted by the RUC for the codes listed
in Table 27: AMA RUC Recommendations and CMS’ Decisions
