Although there are many benefits to electronic<br />

prescribing, there <strong>has</strong> <strong>been</strong> limited adoption and use of<br />

electronic prescribing by physicians and other<br />

professionals who prescribe medications. It is estimated<br />

that only 5 to 18 percent of providers currently use<br />

e-prescribing (Bell, Douglas S. and Friedman, Maria A. “E-<br />

Prescribing and the Medicare Modernization Act of 2008.”<br />

Health Affairs. 2005; Volume 24, no.5: 1159-1169.). The<br />

enactment of the MIPPA in July, 2008, should encourage<br />

significant expansion of the use of electronic prescribing<br />

by authorizing a combination of financial incentives and<br />

payment differentials. Financial incentives are available<br />
