Although there are many benefits to electronic
prescribing, there has been limited adoption and use of
electronic prescribing by physicians and other
professionals who prescribe medications. It is estimated
that only 5 to 18 percent of providers currently use
e-prescribing (Bell, Douglas S. and Friedman, Maria A. “E-

enactment of the MIPPA in July, 2008, should encourage
significant expansion of the use of electronic prescribing
by authorizing a combination of financial incentives and
