hospital care codes (as described by CPT codes 99231<br />

through 99233).<br />

We are finalizing our proposal to create HCPCS codes<br />

specific to the telehealth delivery of follow-up inpatient<br />

consultations solely to re-establish the ability for<br />

practitioners to provide and bill for follow-up inpatient<br />

consultations delivered via telehealth. These codes are<br />

intended for use by practitioners serving beneficiaries<br />

located at qualifying originating sites (as defined in<br />

§410.78) requiring the consultative input of physicians who<br />

are not available for an in person (face-to-face)<br />

encounter. These codes are not intended to include the<br />

ongoing E/M of a hospital inpatient.<br />

Claims for follow-up inpatient telehealth<br />

consultations will be <strong>submitted</strong> to the Medicare contractors<br />

that process claims for the area where the physician or<br />

practitioner who furnishes the service is located.<br />

Physicians/practitioners must submit the appropriate HCPCS<br />

procedure code for follow-up inpatient telehealth<br />

consultations along with the “GT” modifier (“via<br />

interactive audio and video telecommunications system”).<br />

By coding and billing the “GT” modifier with the inpatient<br />

follow-up inpatient telehealth consultation codes, the<br />
