Other unlisted services that are under the PFS are<br />

contractor priced. To make the pricing methodology<br />

consistent with our policy for other unlisted services, and<br />

to more appropriately match payments with the actual<br />

resources expended to deliver the services provided, we<br />

propose to have the contractors value CPT codes 97039 and<br />

97139.<br />

F. Payment for Teaching Anesthesiologists<br />

The following discussion summarizes the current policy<br />

for the payment for services provided by teaching<br />

anesthesiologists and solicits public comments on possible<br />

revisions to the current payment policy.<br />

1. Payment for Anesthesia Services<br />

Anesthesia services are paid under the PFS, but on a<br />

different basis than other physician services. Payments for<br />

anesthesia services are calculated using a “base unit” that<br />

is specific to the anesthesia code plus the anesthesia time<br />

units. As noted in our regulations at §414.46(a)(1), the<br />

base unit reflects all activities other than anesthesia time
