E. Contractor Pricing <strong>of</strong> Unlisted Therapy Modalities and<br />

Procedures<br />

We recognize that there may be services or procedures<br />

performed that have no specific CPT codes assigned. In<br />

these situations, it is appropriate to use one <strong>of</strong> the CPT<br />

codes designated for reporting unlisted procedures. These<br />

unlisted codes do not typically have RVUs assigned to them.<br />

For services coded using these unlisted codes, the<br />

provider includes a description <strong>of</strong> specific procedures that<br />

were furnished. The contractor uses this information to<br />

determine an appropriate valuation.<br />

Currently, there are two unlisted CPT codes with<br />

assigned RVUs, CPT 97039, Unlisted modality (specify and<br />

time if constant attendance), and 97139 Unlisted therapeutic<br />

procedure. Given the variability <strong>of</strong> the services that could<br />

be provided using these nonspecific codes, use <strong>of</strong> assigned<br />

RVUs may not accurately reflect the resources actually
