New York’s <strong>Gay</strong> <strong>Rugby</strong> Team Defeats Boston’s <strong>Gay</strong><br />
<strong>Rugby</strong> Team<br />

On Sunday, March 30th, the <strong>Gotham</strong> Knights <strong>Rugby</strong><br />
<strong>Football</strong> <strong>Club</strong> (RFC), faced off against The Boston<br />
Ironsides RFC. In gruesome conditions of cold, rain,<br />
wind and sometimes calf deep mud both the Ironsides<br />
of Boston and the Knights of <strong>Gotham</strong> renewed their<br />
friendship off the pitch and competition on. No<br />
goalposts and puddles as big as the Charles River did<br />
not deter the spirits of either team.<br />
Play started with aggressive forward play by both<br />
teams and the Ironsides came out very aggressive in<br />
the pack. <strong>Gotham</strong> pressed hard into the Ironsides' red<br />
zone and coming off some great penalty kicks by<br />
Glaessgen and an Ironsides penalty near the 5 meter<br />
line, Glaessgen took the tap to Knights Captain Stace<br />
Houk to Center Danilo Giraudo for the first try of the<br />
season. Some back and forth play and minor penalties<br />
on either side resulted in some scrums and lineouts,<br />
which the Ironsides showed adept at winning and<br />
controlling. The Knights held the line and regained<br />
possession near the touch at Boston's 22. With some<br />
quick hands as the Knights all contemplated who really<br />
wanted to score the try until Butterfield burst over the<br />
try line and scored the second try 10-0 <strong>Gotham</strong> (no<br />
kicks for conversions were played due to missing<br />
goalposts). Play volleyed back and forth mostly in the<br />
Ironsides' end to finish the first 25 minute half as<br />
Glaessgen's boot on penalties kept Boston pinned in<br />
Coming out of halftime the Knights looked much better in loose play with stronger rucks and mauls to<br />
push the advantage into the Ironsides red zone again. Boston successfully held up the rolling maul<br />
and earned a scrum down to them but near their own 5-metre line. Fast flanker and scrummy play<br />
out of the scrum resulted in a blocked kick in the try zone by Martin Smith and an immediate fall on<br />
try by Smith, 15-0 <strong>Gotham</strong>. Again, back and forth possessions resumed as the Knights incurred some<br />
penalties that hurt them and allowed the Ironsides to press into the Knights end near the 22. Out of<br />
another line out won by the Ironsides a lucky mishandled ball resulted in a frenetic kicking volley that<br />
resulted in the Knights pushing back into the Boston end with some aggressive back play by <strong>Gotham</strong>.<br />
Out of a left side ruck, the ball went out right and Varner to Smith to Houk for a fourth try 20-0.<br />
Some more back and forth play in midfield and the game was ended. Final score <strong>Gotham</strong> Knights 20,<br />
Boston Ironsides 0.<br />
Man of the Match: Danilo Giraudo, Inside Center. First try of the season and constant pressure on the<br />
attack that forced Boston to send help to cover and opened up space for other <strong>Gotham</strong> attackers.<br />
Balls Out Player of the Game (and winner of a pair of new rugby ready boxer shorts): Jason Saft,<br />
Winger. First rugby match ever for Jason who successfully protected the touch line and played superb<br />
defense while showing confidence and fearlessness on the pitch.<br />
