It was also the year of largest mileage of new railroad construction in the United Slates. 12.984 miles of new railroad having been built in that year. The decline in the production and consumption of rails in the United States in recent years is primarily due to the great decline which has taken place in railroad construction. Only 2,828 miles of new railroad were built in 1893, and about 2,000 miles were built in 1894. In recent veal's more than one-half of the rails annually produced has been used for repairs and extensions of the tracks of steam railroads and for street and electric lines.
