IRON ORE, COAL, PIG IRON, AND iron ore from Cuba to the I'nited States, 7,830 gross tons being shipped by this company in 1802 and 14.22 tons in 1893. Gross tons. 330,357 362,685 150,439 Coal.—Like iron ore, authentic statistics of the production of all kinds of coal in the United States do not begin until the census year 1870, although the annual shipments of anthracite coal alone from Pennsylvania have been preserved since 1820. in which year this kind of coal may be said to have first become a commercial product. We give below a table showing the production of all kinds of coal in the United States in the census years 1870 and 1880, ending on the 31st day of May of each year; iu the census year 1889, ending on the 31st day of Decemlicr of that year; in the calendar years from 1881 to 1888, aud from 1890 to 1893, the statistics for the last-named calendar years having been compiled by Mr. E. \V.
