now by older famers, was to sow them in rows separated by 40-50 cm and only<br />

sowing two out of three rows.<br />

The quantity of seed sown ranged between 50 and 80 kg/ha. Neither fertilizers<br />

nor pesticides were used, and weeding was performed by hand. The plants were<br />

harvested by hand pulling, earlier than fully matured and were allowed to dry<br />

before threshing by striking the gavels. Yields were about 500 kg/ha.<br />

In more recent times, the high-priced varieties are sown by good farmers in<br />

better soils at higher densities (rows spaced 50-70 cm apart, and all of them are<br />

sown); fertilizers (mainly P and K) as well as pesticides (mainly cuprics against<br />

aschochyta blight) are applied. Sowing, harvesting, pesticide and foliar fertilizer<br />

applications are mechanically performed. Yields can reach 1000 kg/ha in
