Evapotranspiration and Water-Use Efficiency<br />

Accumulated moisture use data are presented in Table 3 for all treatments at the<br />

three sites. Accumulated pan evaporation (Eo) and rainfall are also presented.<br />

Total E, between germination and maturity (95% crop yellowing) is calculated,<br />

and utilizing final harvest data the water-use efficiencies (WUE) are given for<br />

each treatment for boLh total biological yield and seed yield.<br />

All treatments (at a given site) had very simliar accumulated E, values from<br />

germination through until early March. This includes the spring-sown ILC 482<br />

crop which until mid-March (75% emergence) could effectively be considered as<br />

weed-free fallow plots. This similarity of Et of winter-planted crops compared<br />

with evaporation from a bare soil (E.) during the cool winter months has also<br />

been noted for other crops (e.g. wheat, barley, lentils, faba beans). During the<br />

winter, when crop leaf areas are low and the soil surface is frequently rewetted,<br />

E. is the dominant component of E, and it is only in spring, when crop leaf area in­
