Our root studies do show that the winter-planted crop is able to develop lot<br />

more roots in the favorable environment than the spring crop and this should<br />

help in more uptake of nutrients and water to cope up with the requirement for<br />

improved growth. Studies on soil moisture extraction by midwinter- and<br />

spring-planted chickpeas during 1979-80, in collaboration with the SWAN<br />

group of the Farming Systems Program, did show that winter-planted chickpeas<br />

drew more moisture from deeper layers and extracted moisture from<br />

greater depth than the spring crop.<br />
