7FDS Medium-Speed Diesel Generators
High efficiency reciprocating engines with low life-cycle costs
Efficient, cost-effective operation
in harsh environments
With the highest fuel efficiency and lowest life-cycle costs in its
class, GE Transportation’s reliable 7FDS medium speed diesel
engines provide maximum availability and minimum maintenance
costs. Available in 8, 12, or 16 cylinder configurations, these diesel
generator sets run from 900 to 1000 rpm and with generation
voltage up to 13,800 kV.
Ideally suited for continuous prime, peaking, and black start
operations, GE’s 7FDS generator sets offer a full range of power
solutions from 1.2 to 3 MW in enclosed and non-enclosed configurations—providing
reliable power for utility and industrial applications,
and oil and gas fields.
16 cylinder GE 7FDS diesel engine.
A heavy-duty cast mainframe with fully sectionalized power
assemblies simplifies maintenance, provides easy removal,
and minimizes parts inventory levels. Designed for a 20-year
lifetime with extended maintenance intervals, GE’s 7FDS
engine is specifically engineered to meet the demands of
power generation. These rugged, durable systems allow:
• Continuous operation in a desert environment
(with a cyclonic or paper type air filtration system)
• Uninterrupted operation during and after hurricane
force winds
• Standard heavy duty cooling system up to 50°C
with no derate
• Flexible operation in island mode, load share, black
start, or parallel to utilities
GE’s engines are designed with ease of maintenance in mind.
The power assemblies can be easily exchanged, cylinder
heads are welded to the liners to avoid gasket leakage, and
sectional camshafts are easily accessible through large
crankcase doors.
World-class manufacturing center
and global service network
GE Transportation’s engine facility in Grove City, USA.
As the largest manufacturer of medium speed diesel engines in the world—with more than 15,000 medium-speed diesel engines currently
in operation—GE Transportation has the expertise and proven technology to provide customers with dependable power that can meet
your exact needs. In addition to our world-class manufacturing center in Grove City, Pennsylvania, GE maintains a global network of field
service offices and fully-equipped Service Centers that provide a full range of services including:
• Packaging
• Installation and commissioning
• Spare parts and service support during operation
These comprehensive offerings—combined with our commitment to reduce the turn times of Service Centers and outages—result in
substantial life cycle cost savings.
Innovative emissions and control technologies
GE continually develops innovative technologies to meet the evolving
needs of our customers. As leaders in emissions technology, our diesel
engines meet the latest emissions requirements—including MARPOL,
EPA Tier I and EPA Marine 2007 Tier II—providing our 7FDS engines with
NOx emission levels below 8.6 grams per horsepower-hour.
Our PowerStarTM controller (available with multiple customized protection
options) houses the electronic governor unit, speed reference
and load control—protecting the engine against overspeed, overload,
low oil and water pressure, and positive crank pressure. To assure
optimal engine operation and reduce fuel consumption, this unit also
determines the amount and timing of fuel injected into each cylinder.
Unenclosed diesel generator set.
Advanced technology turbocharger
The turbocharger for the 7FDS diesel is designed with GE’s proven
aircraft engine technology. Due to its critical nature, this component—which
is subject to severe thermal stresses—is manufactured
in-house to assure quality and reliability. On every 7FDS unit the
turbocharger is properly matched to the engine for efficiency,
performance, and mechanical packaging—and driven by a single
exhaust to provide higher mission reliability.
Built-in portability GENERATOR SET SPECIFICATIONS
Available in a fully enclosed design, GE’s medium speed generator sets can be relocated to where you need power the most. These 1.2 to
3 MW self-contained portable units are equipped with generator switchgear, auxiliary load transformer, radiators, exhaust silencer, an
integral heavy-duty air filtration system and gasketed doors to enhance serviceability and operation of equipment. For added mobility,
the main enclosure can be transported on a low-boy trailer.
Enclosed diesel generator set.
Quick-installation diesel power that can
grow with your needs
To allow rapid installation—which requires only 5 steps for most
applications—GE’s diesel-powered generator sets contain all necessary
equipment for power generation. With a flexible design for easy
installation and commissioning, they can be configured to operate in
just about any application or environment. If more power is needed,
additional units can be tied together by simply tuning a communication
link to the master generator set, and then configuring the
system via a touch display screen.
GE’s 7FDS engines for lower maintenance and operating costs
Whether it’s an 8, 12, or 16 cylinder reciprocating engine, GE’s 7FDS diesel generator sets help lower the life-cycle
costs associated with fuel consumption—while allowing less mechanical wear on parts.
Compared to high-speed diesels, GE’s medium-speed diesels offer significantly longer times between overhauls,
and between scheduled outages, and are 25% cheaper to operate on a per kilowatt-hour basis.
