The new book “Auralization” by<br />
Michael Vorländer has been long‐<br />
awaited. Particularly attractive about<br />
this book is its very complete coverage<br />
of auralization techniques, presenting<br />
applications not only in room acoustics<br />
but also in sound insulation and in<br />
other noise control engineering<br />
applications, as well as in real‐time<br />
virtual reality. The presentation is<br />
supported by the extensive research<br />
carried out at RWTH in Aachen during<br />
the last twenty years.<br />
Roughly half of the book’s 330 pages is<br />
devoted to fundamentals in acoustics<br />
and signal processing whereas the rest<br />
of the book covers more specific<br />
auralization‐related topics.<br />
A significant part of the book is<br />
dedicated to simulation methods.<br />
General simulation methods such as<br />
boundary element and finite element<br />
methods are introduced and in‐depth<br />
descriptions are given of geometrical<br />
acoustics methods.<br />

Topics that the book cover in greater<br />
detail are ray tracing and the<br />
uncertainty issue, auralization of<br />
sound insulation and structure‐borne<br />

commercial software, as well as tables<br />
of scattering coefficients for a number<br />
of wall constructions.<br />
The book serves as an excellent<br />
overview of the auralization technique<br />
and gives around 230 references for<br />
more detailed studies, many of which<br />
are from the last few years. Being very<br />
much up‐to‐date today, we can expect<br />
that it will stay so for years to come.<br />
