My research has a dual focus, reflecting both the management oriented work on the
internationalization process of firms, and the public policy orientation of the research on
governance. The empirical research on internationalization is currently focused on the
determinants of the geographical reach of firms, and whether the strategies and forms
of the expansion of emerging market multinationals pose a challenge to conventional
thinking. This is complemented by theoretical work that examines the co-evolution between
firms and institutions, and how firms both adjust to institutional constraints as well
as help shape those constraints. This work also explores the nature of the capabilities
that are required for firms to effectively adjust and mold their environment.
The research on governance is primarily focused on issues of public policy, and the
causes and consequences of institutional co-evolution and the intermingling of the
public and private spheres of governance. A central question here concerns the appropriate
form and content of public policy when multinational enterprises, civil society and
governments are increasingly engaged in multistakeholder initiatives and public-private
partnerships in various domains. Such questions are particularly pertinent in the context
of emerging markets and developing countries, where institutional voids or deficiencies
are endemic, but they are equally relevant in the context of OECD countries, where the
boundaries between public and private governance are in the process of being redrawn.
