mas Wohnen mas Housing
Die Struktur des mas «Wohnen» ist auf ein einjähriges
Vollzeitstudium ausgerichtet, lässt aber auch ein zweijähriges
Studium zu.
Vier Module gliedern den Kurs:
1.Gesellschaftlicher Kontext und zeitliche Bedingtheit des
Wohnens und des Wohnungsbaus
2.Wohnungen entwerfen gestern und heute:
Charakteristik, Gebäude, Nutzungsgeschichte
3.Wohnungsbau als Beitrag zur Stadt-, Quartier- und
Siedlungsentwicklung
4.Nachhaltigkeit als neues Ziel im Wohnungsbau.
Ziel des mas ist, die berufsbezogenen Fähigkeiten in
den Bereichen der selbständigen Konzeptionalisierung,
der Analyse und Reflexion eines Themas in aktuellen gesellschaftlichen
wie historischen Zusammenhängen,
der Interpretation, der Umsetzung sowie der mündlichen
und schriftlichen Vermittlung zu erweitern. Die Teilnehmenden
werden in die Grundlagen des sozial- und
kulturwissenschaftlichen Arbeitens eingeführt und
individuell angeleitet. Auch wird die Kommunikation mit
Vertretern anderer Fachbereiche und der Praxis geübt.
Im Vordergrund stehen die den mas-Thesen zugrundeliegenden
individuellen themen- und methodenspezifischen
Lernziele der Studierenden.
Die von Kursleitung, eth Wohnforum und Gästen
bestrittene Vorlesungsreihe «Wohnen» wird in jedem
der vier Module ergänzt durch ein vertiefendes Textseminar,
ein Kolloquium mit der Kursleitung und Workshops
mit externen Fachleuten. Ziel ist, den aktuellen Stand der
mas-Thesen zu diskutieren. Ein Einführungsseminar
zu Methoden der qualitativen Sozialforschung umfasst
zwei halbe Tage. Drei Exkursionen und die von der
Professur Eberle geleitete Seminarwoche sind ebenfalls
Bestandteil des Kurses.
Erfahrungsgemäss sind Architekt/innen kaum vertraut
mit Methoden wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens. Dies bedingt
eine enge Begleitung bei der Konzeptionalisierung
und Durchführung ihrer selbstgewählten mas-Thesis.
Anderseits zeigen einzelne Studierende eine ausgesprochene
Begabung für wissenschaftliches Arbeiten. Zurzeit absolvieren
drei Ehemalige ein Doktorstudium, ein Weiterer
lehrt und forscht als Professor an der Hong Kong University,
mehrere andere nehmen Lehraufträge an in- und
ausländischen Hochschulen wahr. Der Stellenwert
des mas liegt in der Nachwuchsförderung der interdisziplinären
Forschung und Lehre des Wohnens und des
Wohnungsbaus. Die Anleitung sowohl zur umfassenden
Reflexion als auch zur fokussierten Bearbeitung spezifischer
Themen bildet die Absolvent/innen zu kritischen
Expert/innen im gesellschaftlich hochrelevanten Segment
Wohnungsbau aus. Als Kommunikator/innen verfügen
sie über die Kompetenz zu disziplinübergreifender Zusammenarbeit
zwischen akademischem Feld und Praxis,
wie das erste mas-Alumni-Treffen im August 2007 mit
34 der 44 Ehemaligen aus 18 Ländern zeigte. Dieses wachsende
Netzwerk von Entscheidungsträgern dient sowohl
den Ehemaligen als auch der eth.
The structure of the mas Housing is geared towards a
one-year full-time course of study, but the curriculum
can also be completed over two years.
The course is made up of four modules:
1.Social context and the temporary conditions of housing
and of housing construction
2.Designing housing yesterday and today: characteristics,
building, history of use
3.Housing construction as a contribution to the development
of a city, area and housing estate
4.Sustainability as a new aim in housing construction.
The aim of the mas is to expand career-related abilities
in the fields of independent conceptual design; the
analysis and reflection of this topic in current social contexts
as well as in historical contexts; and interpretation
and implementation as well as oral and written communication.
Participants are given an introduction to the
principles of methods pertaining to social sciences and
cultural studies and are instructed individually. Communication
is practiced with representatives of other specialized
areas and there is the opportunity to gain
practical experience. The students’ individual topic and
method-related learning targets, which form the basis
of the mas thesis, are always foremost.
In each of the four modules, the ‘Housing’ lecture
series presented by the course leader(s), eth Wohnforum
and outside guests is supplemented by a detailed
text-based seminar, a colloquium with the course
leader(s) and workshops with external experts. The overall
aim is to discuss the current status of the mas theses.
An introductory seminar about methods of qualitative
social research takes up two half-days. Three excursions
and the seminar week led by Professor Eberle are likewise
an integral part of the course.
Experience has shown that architects are not very
familiar with methods of scientific work. This requires
close monitoring during the conceptual design and implementation
stages of the mas thesis which the participants
choose themselves. On the other hand, some
students display a distinct talent for scholarly work.
Three former students are currently completing their PhDs,
one is teaching and doing research work at the University
of Hong Kong, several have accepted teaching
positions at domestic and overseas universities. The
significance of the mas lies in the fact that it promotes
young talent in interdisciplinary research and teaches
participants about housing and housing construction. The
course’s direction deals not only with comprehensive
reflection but also specific topics in a focused manner in
order to educate graduates to be critical experts in the
socially highly relevant segment of housing construction.
As communicators they possess the competence to
cooperate in a cross-disciplinary manner between the academic
field and practice, as was shown by the first
mas Alumni meeting which was attended by 34 of the
44 former students from 18 countries in August,
2007. This growing network of decision-makers benefits
not only the former students but also the eth.
