233 The Chair of Landscape Architecture of Professor Christophe Girot is organized into three areas: Design Lab, Media Lab and Theory Lab. Design Lab The Design Lab is currently working on the changing river landscape in Switzerland. Using a design method that combines traditional landscape design with advanced cnc modeling technology, the students develop dynamic landscape projects at the interface between wild mountain watercourses and the city. The visions generated during the design semester are concretized in more detailed investigations in elective projects. Both this method and short modular exercises on subjects in landscape architecture, such as topography and vegetation, are applied to the design projects in integrated collaboration with other Chairs. Media Lab Students taking this elective learn to question conventions on the perception of landscape through video. The video camera serves as the tool for this reflection. An understanding of projections existing within chosen landscape spaces forms the basis of informed depictions of the landscape and how design work can influence them. Students developed a set of instruments over four exercises to capture the qualities of space and landscape. Using camera and editing techniques as well as more in depth investigation through an elective project, during the fall semester 2007 the students created short video essays on the Glatt Valley between Lake Greifensee and Kloten Airport. During a video workshop, which took place during the seminar week in October 2007, various filmmakers created short video sketches in Zurich based on the theme ‘MyPlace.Zurich’. Theory Lab The two lecture series ‘History and Theory of Garden Design and Landscape Architecture’ (Landschaftsarchitektur i, Architektur vii) and ‘Theory and Design in Contemporary Landscape Architecture’ (Landschaftsarchitektur ii) deal with the history of the development of designed nature from the beginnings of cultural landscapes and gardens to contemporary landscape architecture. The elective course ‘Landscape and Theory’ is organized as a seminar and investigates continuing conceptual changes in the idea of nature by means of concrete examples of park and garden designs. It aims to encourage a thoughtful understanding of design in landscape architecture. ‘Pamphlet’ Series ‘Pamphlet’ is the title of a publication series that regularly publishes the results of teaching and research at the Chair of Professor Girot. The aim is to record findings, make them available to interested readers, and contribute to contemporary professional discourse. NSL/Institut ILA Departement Architektur Christophe Girot
