Das Institut für Landschaftsarchitektur (ila) versteht sich
als neue akademische Forschungs- und Lehrplattform
an der eth. Lehre und Forschung bauen einerseits auf
klassischen, analytischen Methoden auf, andererseits
leiten sie sich aus angewandten Entwurfsmethoden ab. Das
Institut gehört zum Departement Architektur an der
eth, zudem ist es Teil der multidisziplinären Forschungsund
Lehrplattform des Netzwerks Stadt und Landschaft
nsl. Innerhalb des nsl konzentrieren sich die Aktivitäten
des ila auf die Rolle und die Potentiale der Landschaftsarchitektur
in der aktuellen Debatte über sowohl öffentliche
als auch private Freiräume.
Die Arbeiten am ila lassen sich in drei Lehr- und
Forschungsschwerpunkte unterteilen:
Zum einen befasst sich das Institut mit der Geschichte
und einer kritischen Theorie der Landschaftsarchitektur
des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Forschungsschwerpunkte sind
sowohl im Entwurf als auch in der Theorie und Geschichte
der Landschaftsarchitektur und in der Analyse
und Darstellung und medialen Vermittlung von Landschaftsarchitektur
angesiedelt.
Zweiter Schwerpunkt ist die Suche nach einer innovativen
visuellen Analyse und kognitiven Darstellung
von Landschaft mittels neuer Medien. Hier liegt ein
Schwerpunkt auf digitaler Videotechnologie.
Landschaftsarchitektonisches Entwerfen und Bauen
ist der dritte Schwerpunkt der Arbeiten am Institut.
Grossmassstäbliche Infrastrukturanlagen für Städte und
ihre Peripherien sind genauso Entwurfsaufgaben wie
auch das Projektieren kleinmassstäblicher Freiräume in
einem urbanen Kontext oder privater Gärten. Stehen
bei ersteren der Umgang mit Topographie und systematisches
Denken im Vordergrund, liegt bei der Projektierung
kleinerer Freiräume das Hauptgewicht auf
dem Umgang mit ästhetischen Kategorien.
In allen Bereichen richtet sich der Betrachtungsperimeter
des ila sowohl auf den Garten und den Park
als auch auf die Stadtlandschaft und ihre Peripherie.
Die Arbeiten am Institut verstehen sich als ein Beitrag
sowohl zur Geschichte der Landschaftsarchitektur als
auch zu den massgebenden Debatten um die Entwicklung
von Grundlagen für eine ästhetisch und kulturell
anspruchsvolle Gestaltung unserer städtischen Umwelt.
Ziel ist es, die Basis für ein neues Verständnis
der Entwicklungen und Charakteristika zu legen, die zur
Bewahrung der Kultur- und Stadtlandschaft, einerseits,
und zur Entwicklung zeitgenössischer Konzepte speziell
für die Schweiz, andererseits, beitragen wird.
Zum ila gehören zwei Professuren, Professur
Christophe Girot und Professur Günther Vogt, sowie die
Gastprofessur von Sébastien Marot. Als weiterführende
Ausbildung gibt es auch die Möglichkeit, ein einjähriges
Masterstudium in englischer Sprache (mas la) zu belegen.

The Institute of Landscape Architecture (ila) is a new
academic research and teaching platform at the eth.
Teaching and research are based on both classical analytical
methods as well as experimental inductive design
methods. The Institute is part of the Department of
Architecture at the eth. It is also part of a multidisciplinary
research and teaching platform called Network
City and Landscape (nsl). Within the nsl, the activities
of the institute focus on the role of landscape architecture
within both public and private open spaces.
Work at the ila is divided into three main areas of
teaching and research:
The first area focuses on the history and critical theory
of 20th-century landscape architecture. Main research
topics encompass not only design but also the theory and
history of landscape architecture.
The second area focuses on innovative visual analysis,
rendering, and cognitive representation of landscape
architecture through media. Particular emphasis is given
to visualization through the use of digital video technology.
The third area of teaching and research focuses on
landscape architectural design and construction, especially
within the context of large-scale landscape projects for
cities and their peripheries. This area is also complemented
by assignments on small-scale open space designs and
private gardens. While the emphasis of the former is on
topology and systemic thinking, smaller scale designs
include the added dimensions of contemporary aesthetic
and stylistic issues.
In all three areas, the scale of work at the ila extends
from the garden to the entire urban landscape and its
periphery. Projects developed at the institute contribute
to the history of landscape architecture as well as to
decisive debates on the development of urban environments
of high ecological and cultural quality.
The goal of this institute is to lay the foundations for
a new understanding of environmental design. This
will contribute, on the one hand, to the improvement of
the cultural landscape in general and, on the other hand,
to the development of contemporary concepts specific
to the Swiss context.
The ila has two Chairs, Prof. Christophe Girot and
Prof. Günther Vogt, as well as Guest Professor Sébastien
Marot. In addition, it offers a one-year postgraduate
program in English with a Masters of Advanced Studies
in Landscape Architecture (mas la).
