als auch Techniken des Konstruierens und physischen
Umsetzens.
vermitteln. Im folgenden Jahr soll die Formulierung einer
architektonischen These dazu dienen, die Konstruktion
Prozessen» thematisiert. In ähnlicher Art wie Marcel
Duchamp seinen Werken teilweise Anleitungen beifügte,
The Font, Basile Ribas und
Dominik Weber
werden die Entwurfsprozesse durch «Notationen» erläutert.
Duchamps «manuals» beispielsweise geben dem Betrachter
Hinweise, wie die verschiedenen Teile der Werke
zusammengefügt werden können. Gleichzeitig helfen sie
nachzuvollziehen, welcher Prozess dem Entstehen seiner
24
thought to explain his psychological and sociological
theories. These are to serve as positions which preface
the work in the studio in order to spur the architectural
designs as well as precisely to convey their content.
In the upcoming year, the formulation of an architectural
thesis is to serve in further refining the construction
of concepts as one of three approaches to the concept
of technology in architecture.
Designing Processes
Also to be explored parallel to the ‘construction of concepts’
described above, will be the ‘construction of
processes’, proceeding from the assumption that in order
to form an architectural object, a process of design
must first be conceptualized. The design processes are to
be explained by means of notations, in a manner similar
to that of Marcel Duchamp, who sometimes included
instruction manuals in his works. The Duchamp ‘manuals’,
for example, provide observers with ‘how-to’ hints
regarding the assembly of a work. At the same time, they
serve to clarify the process underlying the development
of his works. 1 Drawing from these techniques, an attempt
will be made to visualize the studio work as a sequence
of logical considerations and steps. A correlating exploration
will be made regarding the influence of the applied
tools (texts, collages, photos, drawings, perspectives,
isometrics, tables, graphics, diagrams, sign techniques like
sketches, free-hand drawing, caad) on the design process
and its outcome.
Physical Constructions
Parallel experiments will aim at approaching architectural
design from the angle of ‘technê’. Breaking with tradition –
which places primary importance on the plan and a
larger scale in the architectural process – architecture is to
undergo critical examination and the development of a
detail as the generator and modifying power of the design
process is to be tested. Working at a small-scale is to
enable issues of production, implementation and processes
