2007/08 ist das dritte und letzte Jahr grosser Veränderungen
am Institut für Hochbautechnik (hbt). Wir sind
mitten in der Umstellung unserer Ausbildung auf das
Bachelor-/Master-Programm. Vor allen Dingen bedarf der
neu einzurichtende «Entwurf mit Integrierten Disziplinen»
erheblicher personeller und organisatorischer Anstrengungen.
Das hbt sieht darin ein ideales Gefäss, seine Rolle
in der architektonischen Ausbildung weiter zu verstärken.
Neben der Umstellung in der Lehre werden in
diesen Jahren auch wichtige Professuren des hbt
neu belegt. Die Professur für Tragkonstruktion konnte
mit Prof. Dr. Joseph Schwartz prominent neu besetzt
werden. Mit dem Ausscheiden von Prof. Dr. Otto Künzle
im Herbst werden wir eine zusätzliche Assistenzprofessur
für Tragkonstruktionen etablieren. Damit haben wir
endlich wieder eine Ausstattung, wie wir sie aus früheren
Jahren kennen und mit der wir dieses zentrale Fach
adäquat bearbeiten können. Auch die Nachfolge von
Prof. Dr. Bruno Keller werden wir in diesem Jahr
erfolgreich abschliessen können. Auch wenn die räumliche
Frage des Departements Architektur in diesem Jahr
mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit nicht gelöst werden kann,
plant das hbt mit hoher Intensität eine Lösung, seine
Räumlichkeiten im Geschoss e10 zusammenzuziehen.
Die Erweiterung des erfolgreichen Gebäudetechnik-Labors
von Prof. Dr. Leibundgut ist die wesentliche Triebkraft
dieser Bemühungen. Das hbt ist fest verankert in der
Schweizer Bauindustrie und muss keinen Vergleich scheuen.
Es verfügt an der eth über eine einmalig gute Ausstattung
und spielt eine wichtige Rolle in der internationalen
Forschungslandschaft. Durch die Professuren für Tragkonstruktionen
und für Bauphysik werden den Studierenden
die Grundlagen für eine nachhaltige Materialwahl
und eine energetisch und behaglichkeitsmässig optimale
Gestaltung des Bauwerkes vermittelt. Die Professur für
Gebäudetechnik befasst sich mit der optimalen Deckung
des dann noch verbleibenden Bedarfs an Energie und
Medien und die Professur für Architektur und Bauprozess
schliesslich mit der optimalen Gestaltung des Planungsund
Bauprozesses. Die Professur für caad stellt die notwendigen
Instrumente zur Verfügung, damit eine effiziente
Vernetzung der einzelnen Disziplinen möglich wird.
Eine Informations- und Dokumentationsstelle berät die
Studierenden und stellt Kataloge und Unterlagen
zur Verfügung. Entsprechend den unterschiedlichen Lehrgebieten
erstrecken sich die Forschungsaktivitäten auf
angewandte Problemstellungen, die erfahrungsgemäss rasch
und mit Erfolg in die Baupraxis einfliessen, und auf
grundsätzliche Problemstellungen, die etwas mehr Zeit
für die praktische Umsetzung erfordern, dafür in
der Praxis häufig grössere Schritte und langfristigere
Prozesse auslösen.

This year concludes the third and final year of tremendous
change at the Institute for Building Technology (hbt).
We are in the midst of converting our curriculum to the
Bachelor and Master program. Above all, the new
‘Design Studios with Integrated Disciplines’ have demanded
considerable staffing and organizational effort. The hbt
regards these studios as the ideal vehicle for continually
strengthening its role in architectural education. In
addition to the curriculum changes, several important
posts are being filled this year. The Chair of Building
Structures has gained a prominent new head with
Prof. Dr. Joseph Schwartz. In addition, upon Prof. Dr. Otto
Künzle’s departure this fall, we will establish an additional
assistant professorship for building structures. These
changes will allow us again to have the kind of team we
were familiar with in past years and to handle adequately
this central area of the curriculum. We will also successfully
appoint Prof. Dr. Bruno Keller’s successor this year.
Even though it is most likely that we will not be able
to resolve issues regarding the spatial organization of the
Architecture Department this year, the hbt is intensively
pursuing a solution to bring together its offices on
floor e10. The expansion of Prof. Dr. Leibundgut’s successful
building technology laboratory is the essential driver
of these efforts. The hbt is deeply rooted in Switzerland’s
building industry and cannot afford to lose its
leadership status. It benefits from the top-quality environment
and resources at the eth and plays an important
role in the international research community. Through
knowledge passed on by the Chairs of Building Structures
and Building Systems, students are given a solid
foundation for making sustainable material choices
and optimizing the design of buildings. The Chair of
Building Systems focuses on the optimal coverage
of the remaining requirements for energy and media,
and finally, the Chair of Architecture and Building
Management concerns itself with the optimal design of
planning and building processes. The Chair of caad
provides the instruments necessary for enabling the efficient
networking of the individual disciplines. An
information and documentation resource office counsels
students and provides access to catalogues, manuals,
and brochures. Parallel to the different fields of teaching
are the research activities and projects on related issues,
which rapidly and, as experience has shown, successfully
flow into the building practice. In addition, fundamental
problems are also being addressed, which often
require more time for the development of practical
applications but ultimately spark greater steps and longterm
processes of change.
