Kulturelle Identität und Modernisierung
Die Architektur- und Kunstbeziehungen zwischen der Schweiz
und den USA 1850–1950
Der weitreichende Einfluss, den die usa insbesondere
nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg auf Politik, Ökonomie,
Kultur und Alltagsleben der europäischen Länder gewonnen
haben, ist breit erforscht. Bislang fehlen jedoch
fort.
Entworfen wird ein umfassendes Bild der bilateralen
Kunstbeziehungen unter dem historischen Paradigma
des Kulturtransfers. Zwei Teilprojekte – Kunstbeziehungen
in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts sowie Sigfried
Giedion und die usa – ermöglichen die Verknüpfung
kulturgeschichtlicher und wissenschaftshistorischer Ansätze.
Beide Teilprojekte suchen Antworten auf die
Leitfrage nach kultureller Identität und Modernisierung.
Frank Buchsers kulturpolitischer Einsatz in Übersee.
Cultural Identity and Modernization
Architectural and Artistic Relations between Switzerland and
the USA 1850–1950
‘Americanization’ is generally regarded as referring to the
worldwide influence that the usa has exercised, particularly
after World War ii, on the politics, economy,
culture and everyday life of European countries. This
aspect of the phenomenon has been widely researched.
What is, however, still missing, is in-depth historical
research on the genesis and development of bilateral cultural
relations between the individual European nations
and the usa.
The research project takes as its example the architectural
and artistic relations between Switzerland and
the usa between 1850 and 1950. The topicality of the issue
has to do with the processes of the development of a
cultural identity in the Swiss nation state and it’s participation
in the development of an architectural modernity,
both of which are still taking effect today.
The project takes the form of a comprehensive overview
of bilateral relations under the historical paradigms
of cultural transfer. Two sub-projects – artistic relations
in the second half of the 19th century and Sigfried Giedion
in America – provide a bridge between the art-historical
and the cultural-historical aspects. Both projects are
engaging in questions of cultural identity and modernization.
Frank Buchser’s Involvement in Transatlantic Cultural Politics:
the Modernization of Swiss National Iconography under
American Auspices
The first building for Switzerland’s Executive Federal
Council was erected as an expression of the country’s
new self-confidence. As a central location intended
to represent the prestige of the national state, the building’s
characteristics were substantially influenced by
the context of the Friendship Treaty and the problem of
civil war that was common to both Switzerland and
the usa. This can be seen specifically in the decorative
iconography that was initially planned, as well as in
the design of the building. The painter Frank Buchser regarded
his journey to the usa in 1866 as an unofficial
mission on behalf of the Executive Federal Council. His
primary concern was to prepare the project of a largeformat
mural for the existing Federal Council building;
the subject of the mural was to be the American Civil
War. In a journal which he kept – which is highly informative
about the way in which he perceived the United
States – the painter reports on the journey and his preparatory
work for the decoration of the Council chamber.
The genesis of this project and its significance as one of
the principal examples of state prestige art in Switzerland
will be discussed. The study will address questions
about the political motivations behind the choice
of subjects and about parallelism between the wars in
Switzerland and the United States. The reasons
behind the failure of the project also need to be investigated
– the appeal to a common history was selectively
abandoned during the planning. Despite this, the American
model of a parliamentary federal state continued
